Guest WILDcorp Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Win 2003 domain with XP clients. Have no idea what changed? I think it was a cowboy admin if you know what I mean? I assume you are getting the "access denied" on the server but you haven't provided much information. My first thought is that you should check the server for viruses in case someone was using it wrongly, didn't patch it, etc. Then you might want to post in the server newsgroup, this time providing full information about your situation. http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Usenet http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/555375 - How to Ask a Question microsoft.public.windows.server.general http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2....emoving_Malware Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic! Guest WILDcorp Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Well a cowboy admin is one who goes in and makes changes without letting anyone know. As far as more in fo, it is not on the server. The client users are getting the access denied when they attempt to change password at next logon. Simply put, users cannot change their passwords. Not sure what else you need to know. This just started the other day out of the blue. When new user accounts are created or and admin forces a user to change password at next logon, they get acces denied when they try to change it. Possibly ask the "cowboy admin" what he/she did? If you have a rogue sysadmin, someone who is disgruntled, someone who is recently fired, then who knows what else was done. If you don't want to post in one of the server newsgroups, I'm sure one of the security gurus will come along shortly. Without more information such as what changed, what security, what Service Pack level of XP Pro, etc. I simply can't guess. Sorry I was unable to help you. Either of these, in combination with the "user must change on next logon" can cause that error. You can also check the "minimum password age" setting, as this can cause an incorrect error that the password given doesn't meet the complexity rules (among some other strange error messages, making it difficult to pinpoint. and shoot the 'cowboy admin' <grin> Mike Quote

Guest FromTheRafters Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 This reminds me of the comic specializing in ethnic jokes. At the start of his routine he'd ask if there were any ethnics in the audience. ....but seriously - perhaps we should just call it a 'rogue admin' and chance the wrath of the rogues. http://www.wowwiki.com/Rogue "Anteaus" <Anteaus@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:6243FBB5-0B1D-4669-BDCD-624A2264DA8B@microsoft.com...<span style="color:blue"> > > "Special Access" wrote: ><span style="color:green"> >> and shoot the 'cowboy admin' <grin></span> > > In view of that profession's high degree of skill with firearms, your > chance > of success might not be too good.
