What operating system(s)? Domain or Workgroup? What changed between the time

things worked and the time they didn't?

Win 2003 domain with XP clients. Have no idea what changed? I think it was a

cowboy admin if you know what I mean?

A "cowboy admin"? No, I'm afraid I don't know what you mean. I assume you

are getting the "access denied" on the server but you haven't provided much

information. My first thought is that you should check the server for

viruses in case someone was using it wrongly, didn't patch it, etc. Then

you might want to post in the server newsgroup, this time providing full

information about your situation.

Well a cowboy admin is one who goes in and makes changes without letting

anyone know. As far as more in fo, it is not on the server. The client users

are getting the access denied when they attempt to change password at next

logon. Simply put, users cannot change their passwords. Not sure what else

you need to know. This just started the other day out of the blue. When new

user accounts are created or and admin forces a user to change password at

next logon, they get acces denied when they try to change it.

And your security is? Etc.

Possibly ask the "cowboy admin" what he/she did? If you have a rogue

sysadmin, someone who is disgruntled, someone who is recently fired, then

who knows what else was done. If you don't want to post in one of the

server newsgroups, I'm sure one of the security gurus will come along

shortly. Without more information such as what changed, what security, what

Service Pack level of XP Pro, etc. I simply can't guess.

Sorry I was unable to help you.

Check the user's account and make sure the "password never expires"

and /or "user can't change password" is NOT checked. Either of these,

in combination with the "user must change on next logon" can cause

that error.

You can also check the "minimum password age" setting, as this can

cause an incorrect error that the password given doesn't meet the

complexity rules (among some other strange error messages, making it

difficult to pinpoint.

and shoot the 'cowboy admin' <grin>

I reckons, folks who say things a mite derogatory-like about cowpokes oughta

take a turn on a rodeo steer. Let's see how they get on with that. Or more

likely, how they don't. <g>

In view of that profession's high degree of skill with firearms, your chance

of success might not be too good. Only outcome for you might be an unplanned

visit to Boot Hill. :-)

This reminds me of the comic specializing in ethnic jokes.

At the start of his routine he'd ask if there were any ethnics

in the audience.

....but seriously - perhaps we should just call it a 'rogue admin'

and chance the wrath of the rogues.
