Guest Twan Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 How do I disable downloading Windows Updates on a user or a connection basis? Context: On our laptops we have a specific local user account for connecting to the Internet by UMTS / HSDPA. However we don't want Windows to use this connection for downloading updates. How to prevent? Editing the Registry key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\Explorer\NoWindowsUpdate = 1 doesn't work. Greets, Twan Quote
Guest CTOS Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Windows Update is a system (computer) service and as far as I know cannot be disabled on a per user basis. An alternative would be to turn off the Windows Update service so no user would be running it during their login session. Then when you want to check for updates, login as an Administrator and manually turn on the service and check/install updates. When finished turn off the service. Not a very elegant solution, but doable.
