Tried loading a seemingly genuine Microsoft Service Pack 3 on my laptop. The

programme froze and now cannot start up the system - the MS restart page just

does not respond, and will not revert to last known good programme ! You can

probably tell I'm not not very computer savvy !! Any thoughts

Is this on the same computer that is infected? If yes, installing a Service

Pack onto an infected computer is a recipe for disaster. If no, please

explain why you think this wasn't genuine. From where did you get it?

Please also give an exact description of what "cannot start up the system"

means. Nothing happens when you push the power button? Windows loads and

gets to [fill in the blank]?

Am totally bewildered to hear this, never in my wildest of imagination

can I think the SP irrespective of their numbers to be viruses. Unless

this has been sought from pirated sources such chances can never happen.

Also it looks to me that there was some instances of viruses present in

your system previously which simply compounded the problem as Malke has

referred too.

How did you obtain this program? Is the above the actual name of

the program? What Operating System is on the affected computer.

Are you saying that it froze, you forced a shutdown, and now it

won't boot?

Is this the safemode menu screen?

What error messages (if any) do you get?

You haven't provided much information (or I'm just not seeing it).

It's like a doctor getting a phone call that says "doc, it hurts when

I do this".

Practically any "program" can host a virus.

You would think...

But if it happened, it wouldn't be the first time a trustworthy source

distributed malware.

Some people refer to anything that goes wrong with a computer

as a "virus". It sounds to me like botched installation or malware

posing as an SP.
