Guest Swiss Steve Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 Tried loading a seemingly genuine Microsoft Service Pack 3 on my laptop. The programme froze and now cannot start up the system - the MS restart page just does not respond, and will not revert to last known good programme ! You can probably tell I'm not not very computer savvy !! Any thoughts Swiss Steve Quote

If yes, installing a Service Pack onto an infected computer is a recipe for disaster. If no, please explain why you think this wasn't genuine. From where did you get it? Please also give an exact description of what "cannot start up the system" means. Nothing happens when you push the power button? Windows loads and gets to [fill in the blank]? Guest brucereid Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 Am totally bewildered to hear this, never in my wildest of imagination can I think the SP irrespective of their numbers to be viruses. Unless this has been sought from pirated sources such chances can never happen. Also it looks to me that there was some instances of viruses present in your system previously which simply compounded the problem as Malke has referred too. -- brucereid ------------------------------------------------------------------------ brucereid's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/brucereid.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/security-virus/1061253.htm http://forums.techarena.in Quote

Is the above the actual name of the program? What Operating System is on the affected computer. <span style="color:blue"> > The programme froze and now cannot start up the system</span> Are you saying that it froze, you forced a shutdown, and now it won't boot? <span style="color:blue"> > - the MS restart page just does not respond,</span> Is this the safemode menu screen? <span style="color:blue"> > and will not revert to last known good programme ! But if it happened, it wouldn't be the first time a trustworthy source distributed malware. <span style="color:blue"> > Also it looks to me that there was some instances of viruses present in > your system previously which simply compounded the problem as Malke has > referred too.</span> Some people refer to anything that goes wrong with a computer as a "virus". It sounds to me like botched installation or malware posing as an SP. Quote
