Guest Chuckgo Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182086 Explains How to Clear the Windows Paging File at Shutdown As I can expect shut down will take longer. I am curious, what is going on during this time? A fellow SA said Windows is writing random 1's and 0's Is this in fact what is occuring? -- Chuck Gogolin MCSE Security MCP+I Quote
Guest FromTheRafters Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 If it isn't doing at least that, what good is it? There is no 'deleting' or clearing on a drive - only overwriting. - aside from degaussing that is. Guest FromTheRafters Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 I guess zeroes are good enough to prevent "processes" from accessing the data. but you are still left with the possibility of forensic probes. Guest S. Pidgorny Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 I haven't seen any evidence beyond theories that suggests that overwritten data can be recovered from modern hard drives. Guest FromTheRafters Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 When security standards exist for multiple overwrites (7 times last I knew) of random 1s and 0s and some drives offer half- tracking capabilities - I tend to think there is a valid threat to warrant such methods. ....of course regular ordinary people shouldn't be worried too much about it - as you said, it is a very expensive proposition. I feel pretty certain that merely overwriting with one pass of zeroes is grossly lacking securitywise. It is sufficient for making the data not software accessible though. "S.
