How was it hacked?

Did they brute force your password?

- what was it..."Fluffy"?

....I'm just sayin' - maybe it's not their hole that needs plugging.

Hackers probably find it easier to guess passwords of existing

accounts than to attempt to read CAPTCHA in order to create

their own new accounts. The former can be automated.

It is not Microsoft's fault that you use an short and easily cracked

password using brute force methods. Change the password and this time

use a strong password. If your account gets hacked again, start

checking your host for a keylogger and start reconsidering if you use

your laptop at Internet cafes without using SSL for the connection to

the mail server.

I just discovered my Hotmail account is the victim of hacking too.

My password was 7 characters, and a mix of upper and lower case, with some

numbers thrown in to. I hardly think that's an easily brute forced password.

Needless to say its been changed.

Actually - yes - seven (7) characters is more easily hacked than eight (8)

(not strickly because of the number of characters, but specifically the

number of them being seven (7). A full fourteen (14) would also be fairly

vulnerable to brute force, over fourteeen (14) characters... not so much.)

I'd suggest 15+ characters. Afraid you cannot remember that many?

!cann0tRemember

<- That's a pretty strrong password. ;-) I don't suggest using it now that

it is associated with you, however.

You're getting a Hotmail password confused with LanMan hashes. There's no

truth to what you state above unless you're referring to LanMan hashes.

Then it has been a good holiday to me. vbg

I'd still bet a fifteen character+ password would still be harder to brute

force (see the person I was responding to - they specified that method)

than a seven character one in almost all cases. Particularly a properly

composed one (at least three of the coveted four: lowercase, upercase,

symbol and number.)

In any case - it is doubtful the (referred to) hotmail passwords were hacked

by any other means than simple deception/knowledgable guessing in some form.

FYI, My HM accnt was just hacked with the same result today. In addition to

the auto-reply with links to some odd site, they also sent out the same reply

to all my contacts.

My password was pretty weak, especially considering I am in the business. I

am not sure if it was a brute force crack, or possibly a keylogger on some

machine I used at some time in the past.

Yep,

Same hack on my @hotmail acct. A bogus phishing spam em is sent out to the

entire address book from my acct, address book is wiped out and the vacation

notification is turned on (and cannot be turned off, nor content erased) Oh,

crap!

When creating strong pw's, remember that there are many businesses and

websites whose IT mgrs still limit number of characters, or require a certain

combination of letters, numbers, etc. That becomes so cumbersome to remember

all the restrictions, it forces people to record them some place...and now

there is another security risk...'whoops, lost my

daytimer/treo/wallet/laptop...'. Oh, bother. Hope someone can find the

jerks doing this and nail them to a wall.
