Unable to complete virus scan

My computer shuts itself down everytime I try to perform a scan. I use

SpyBot, Defender, and Avast with XP. All will update, but none are able to

complete a scan, even in Safe Mode. Any suggestions?

It could mean you're infected or it could mean your hard drive is failing.

There is simply no way for us to know based on so little information. If

you have reason to believe you're infected, you could try scanning with

David Lipman's Multi_AV in Safe Mode or even from outside the system with a

Bart's PE.
