Guest kakii Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 I made recently following experience with my vista business 32bits. UAC disabled. When logged on as an user from adminstrative group my 3rd party firewall can't be started with administrative privileges. Attempts to change settings of that firewall result in error message like "You haven't sufficient access rights". Starting that firewall using "Run as..." doesn't help. Applications can't be started with administrative access rights if logged-in as limited rights user and using "Run as..." option. While using run-as I expect to get administrator password prompt. That doesn't occur. After having selected run-as option from icon's context menu the application starts as normally. I can recognize that application started this way runs with limited rights because my mail client fetches local mails stored in the limited user's profile directory, not the adminstrator's one. Is this a wanted behaviour of Vista when UAC disabled ? If not, what can be the reason of this behaviour ? Quote
Guest GTS Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Disabling UAC can have varying impact on programs, sometimes depending on whether they were installed with UAC on or off. I recommend not disabling UAC, but if you want to, a better solution is to use the TweakUAC utility to set UAC to quiet mode. It gets rid of the prompts without causing these kinds of problems. http://www.tweak-uac.com/home/ -- "kakii" <user@domain.co> wrote in message news:%23qWqWTiUJHA.6044@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl...<span style="color:blue"> > > I made recently following experience with my vista business 32bits. > > UAC disabled. > When logged on as an user from adminstrative group my 3rd party firewall > can't be started with administrative privileges. Guest kakii Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 but generally "Run-As..." should work also with UAC disabled. That's no deal of none application, it's Windows ! Am I wrong ? Guest Jimmy Brush Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 The "run as" explorer menu command has been replaced by the "run as administrator" menu command. "Run as administrator" is a component of UAC, and thus is not available when UAC is disabled. However, the "runas" command-line tool still exists and can be used. With UAC disabled, all programs have administrative rights when you are logged in as an administrator, regardless of whatever error message is displayed. You may try right-clicking the misbehaving program, clicking properties, clicking the compatibility tab, and setting it to Windows XP. - JB "kakii" <user@domain.co> wrote in message news:#qWqWTiUJHA.6044@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl...<span style="color:blue"> > > I made recently following experience with my vista business 32bits. > > UAC disabled. > When logged on as an user from adminstrative group my 3rd party firewall > can't be started with administrative privileges. Guest kakii Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 It may be, I remembered only the first sequence "run as..." If run-as-administrator is not available when UAC disabled then I think it shouldn't be available in the context menu at all. Otherwise it is irritating. Please imagine one get in context menu such positions like Elephant, or Bribiiii, or blablabla, or thousand of other not needed stuff. If there is any (mostly DLL files), then it's a problem of a file corruption or bad function or some such, or else there maybe some more serious problems, like hurting the symbols or the like. Give us a memory dump out of the situation to have a more accurate answer. Quote
