Guest Harry Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 I recently installed the paid version of AVG 8.0 Although the program works well, I have noticed that my start up time has increased from 1 minute to 4 minutes. Does anybody have a similar experience or a solution? Quote
Guest NormCameron Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Did you replace another Anti-virus with AVG. Could be that the old AV wasn't uninstalled correctly, particularly if it was Norton. -- NormCameron Quote

Check your AV settings. I use Win-Patrol to give me a delayed start for my Antivirus. This allows me to boot and get on with stuff while the AV loads and scans. -- NormCameron Quote

I note however he has installed the Pro version and has therefore probably paid for it. AVG is not so bad that you'd throw good dollars away to replace it. Guest FromTheRafters Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 AV has to scan every program before it is allowed to execute. It will necessarily take additional time to do this. As to whether or not a 4 to 1 increase in time is normal, I don't know. Maybe someone else can do comparisons for you. However it IS better than Avira Free, which rates lower than AVG free on the list of next to useless programs, why should he trade down from something he has paid for just because your alternative is free. Also Spyware removers are just that, they remove infections. An anti-virus is supposed to prevent infection. I have seen no indication in Harry's posts that he believes he has an infected computer. An infection usually manifests itself in ways other than a slow boot. He came to this forum seeking advice not to be told he is an idiot for not doing what he has been told to do. It isn't as bad as is suggested, why throw your money away. Did you check the startup options? Is it doing a scan on boot? I like Avast, it seems to work well for a lot of people on the forum. All A/V programs add to your start time. I also use Firefox with No-Script addon. It's a pain in the backside sometimes, a bit like UAC but well worth it to avoid the drive -by nasties and malware such as Antivirus 2009. Take look and see what else is loading at boot. You could also look at Brinks Tutorials on improving start-up times. I know when I first joined the Forums I had problems with slow boot-up and these resolved it for me. -- NormCameron Quote
