Watch out Robear Dyer or they'll take away your badge!

I think Microsoft Answers is a great idea - get people away from this

totally unregulated free-for-all known as Newsgroups.

I often wonder how many folk who post in Microsoft Communities really

understand that they are becoming involved in Usenet and that their post

may be displayed across a myriad of servers. Exposed, too, to some who

may not have their welfare at heart. My guess is that it will be close

to zero.

At least in the Microsoft Forums there will be some supervision and

moderation. That is a good thing IMO.

NNTP servers can be moderated; and moderation may not be a good thing.

BTW, 'msnews.microsoft.com' is moderated to a limited extent. They do try to

keep the spam levels down, and are, generally, pretty good at it.

Norman - you said "They do try to keep the spam levels down ... "

My response is NOT meant to be confrontational .........

Who, exactly, are the "They" to which you refer?

AFAICT, if a post is made from a server other than Microsoft, no-one has

any control whatsoever. Anyone may post a link to who-knows-where and

no-one is responsible for checking that any 'link' is safe.

If I've got this wrong, please tell me.

Insufficient information, FTR.

I looked and found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sysop but that isn't

really very helpful.

Are the Sysop's to which you refer employees of Microsoft? Are they

MVP's? Are they paid to do the job? Do they make sure that no links

to'bad' sites are posted? Do they remove them if they are found?

Someone removes SPAM - I've noticed, but make the Newsgroups safe?

I think not .

Anyone can run a nntp server, and be a sysop.

> Are the Sysop's to which you refer employees of Microsoft?

I assume the MS servers are run by someone that Microsoft allows to

run them. Whether by subcontract or inhouse.

> Are they MVP's?

We're getting into the "who cares" category.

> Are they paid to do the job?

Who cares? (we have arrived)

> Do they make sure that no links to'bad' sites are posted?

No, they can only control what their server does. They can't "take back"

something that already went out to usenet at large (posted through them) but

they can remove them from their servers.

> Do they remove them if they are found?

I don't know, I have seen some posts disappear from their server, while I

still can view them locally.

Newsgroups have no central governing body - only protocols. Some have

moderators (usually volunteers) to police what their servers offer or

allow.

The administration of the MS News Service has been outsourced. Prior to that is was

administered by Microsoft personnel such as John Eddy.

OTOH, moderated forums are a good thing. BD's been banned from several of

them (and has been banned by several ISPs, too).

BD has NEVER been 'banned' by ANY ISP

Why, I wonder, does Robear lie - blatantly? He KNOWS that is not true!

"They" are the administrators of 'msnews.microsoft.com'. They can clean

their own feeds of spam; and, because their servers propagate to the other

serves, their actions also propagate to the other servers.

The administrators of 'msnews.microsoft.com' have the authority to cancel

posts in their groups. Their cancels, unlike user cancels, will be honored

by other NNTP servers, because they are the authorized administrators of

'msnews.microsoft.com'.

And he has his reasons for doing so (assuming that he actually has). Why

should I disturb him any more than I already do? Frankly, I am surprised

that he hasn't killfiled me. But it would be rude of me to violate his

wishes, don't you think?

I confess that I am a little surprised by your answer, Norman.

Your posts seem absolutely fine to me and I have never questioned your

advice or motives. I cannot conceive a circumstance where PABear would

wish to killfile you .

Rude or not, I feel it only right and proper that someone should warn

him of my intentions before I publish to the world that he has LIED - I

know that, He knows that ......... and so does Robear Dyer.

It is your prerogative to refuse my request, Norman. Maybe, just maybe,

someone else will make sure the message gets through to him.

Regardless, I'd like you to know that I value the help which you have

given to me and I'm confident that many others appreciate your advice

too. Thank you.

Brilliant.

Y'know, posting a spam like that is, in fact, a great way to ruin ones

own reputation.

You make me wish I was still the NG Admin.

I removed one idiot's post when he did the same sort of thing, and it

would have been my pleasure to do it to yours too.
