PROBLEM: NTFS Partition Corrupts when copying Master Drive to BackUp Drive

#2 in Removable Carriage but am able to copy BackUp Drive #1 to BackUp Drive

#2. Have not attempted to copy Master to BackUp Drive #1 for fear of losing

BackUp Drive #1.

SYSTEM

XP-Pro SP3. (single user)

Master Western Digital drive has NTFS File System

Master drive partitioned into two 20 gb partitions (boot and data).

Each partition on master drive is approximately ½ full.

Master drive works and performs without issue.

Master drive has been tested for viruses with Symantec, MS Online, and

special MS Virus checker provided when calling Online directly. - No Viruses

BackUp #2 Western Digital hard drive has been tested (no errors) and zeroed

using Lifeguard 11.2 before each attempt at backup,

NOTE: WD Lifeguard uses DrDOS so assume OK for NTFS Copy Use?

BACKGROUND

Have three identical WD EIDE 40gb drives which reside in removeable

carriages. A master drive and two backup drives. Backup drives are manually

installed and rotated once a week and have never been RAID or Mirrored on

line.

BackUp Attempted with WD Lifeguard 11.2, both from Floppy Disk and CD. Both

failed in numerous attempts.

Used Easy install feature of Lifeguard to copy Master (source) drive to

BackUp Drive #2.. "Easy Install" of Lifeguard normally copies both

partitions and informs user to remove newly installed drive prior to reboot

so newly installed drive boot partition is Not corrupted.

Today "Easy install" appears to copy just the boot partition (based on

progress bar), but after copying am thrown to DOS prompt with message --

remove disk and reboot.

After copying BackUp Drive is Not Useable (Corrupted)

Examined Partition tables of Drives

Master Drive Partition (Source)

1 HPFS - NTFS 0 1 1 2436 254 63 39150342 VOL 1

2 Extended LBA 2437 0 1 4864 254 63 39005820

5 L HPFS - NTFS 2437 1 1 4864 254 63 39005757 VOL 2

BackUp Drive #2 (Destination)

BackUp drive tested prior to copy using TestDisk shows no partition

information since erased and zeroed.

Partition information after copying from Master.

1 HPFS - NTFS 0 1 1 2436 254 63 39150342

1 HPFS - NTFS 0 1 1 2436 254 63 39150342 <<< Table has Dup Line

2 Extended LBA 2437 0 1 4864 254 63 39005820

5 L HPFS - NTFS 2437 1 1 4864 254 63 39005757 VOL 2

========================

How do I proceed?

Thanks

My approach would be to possibly "Spinrite 6" all hard disks, (very lengthy

procedure),

....then fault find cables, (esp. IDE ribbons, from IDE ports to the rear of

female caddy / bays - if applicable),

....then try your, (previously working ?), procedure with hard-disks

connected directly to IDE ports - maybe put the caddy's temporarily in the

rubbish bin, unless they are very good quality ones!

i.e. the Parallel Port type connector/s in cheaper hd drive bay / caddy's

can cause corruption problems - many years ago I ended up throwing them away

after I experienced corruption problems.

regards, Richard
