Guest andyb597 Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Hi, I want to encrypt all my personal files on my computer but without loosing their date stamps (modified date). Otherwise, if I encrypt them, they will have all today's date. Thanks. -- andyb597 Quote

No way around this (this is correct file system behavior for files being changed). -- Mike Brannigan Quote
Guest FromTheRafters Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 What happens if you encrypt the folders instead of the files? Guest andyb597 Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 If I encrypt the folders all date stamps of the files in the folders change. But, something else seems to work. I encrypted an empty folder and then copied everything into it. That encrypts the files but leaves the date stamp unchanged. However, there seems to be another problem. While some of the encrypted files can be opened without problems, others don't open anymore. I found no systematic cause for that. Do you have any idea? Thanks. -- andyb597 Quote
Guest FromTheRafters Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Sorry, no. You didn't happen to mention what encryption software and/or operating system you are trying to use to accomplish this. I use TrueCrypt and don't have the issues you do on my XP Pro or Vista Home Premium laptops. I have my encrypted files in a file that appears as a mounted drive when TrueCrypt is using it. I am unfamiliar with the use of EFS or BitLocker that comes with some Microsoft OSes. Perhaps a more focused group will be more help to you. Guest andyb597 Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Thanks. I am just encrypting the files with the encryption system that comes with Vista. That's why I thought the Vista forum would be right for this. Any other forum you can suggest? -- andyb597 Quote
Guest FromTheRafters Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Sorry, I can't help you there. Not all 'Vista's' are created equal, mine doesn't have BitLocker so I am in unfamiliar territory. Guest Sam Hobbs Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 Whenever saying something such as "doesn't work" or "don't open" it is usually necessary to be more specific. You might actually get a useful answer if you were.
