what is a SCRAP file?

My granddaughter wrote a book report on MS Word and saved it to a USB

"thumbdrive". The book report "Movie Review.doc" (23k) was saved but

another file called Scrap (39k) was saved at the same time. There was no

file extention for the Scrap file. Does anyone know what caused this

additional file to be saved, what this file is and is it harmful. Thank you
