Guest phil Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 My avg anti virus program(free edition) , seems to be corrupted. I would like to delete the program and reinstall it. How would I proceed. ?/ I hesitate to delete the program first, because I will be unprotected until the new installation is finished. By the way can someone indicate me a safe website to download AVG. Thanks Quote

If your computer is connected wired (or wirelessly) to a router, you can skip Step 1. Just don't surf around. Of course in both cases, have your new antivirus program downloaded first. Then go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs (XP) or Control Panel>Programs & Features (Vista) and uninstall AVG. Reboot and install the antivirus of your choice. I don't recommend AVG. My recommendations are for NOD32 (commercial) or Avast (free version). Safe websites to download antivirus programs are the antivirus programs' websites themselves. http://www.eset.com/ (NOD32) http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition Just a note of caution - make sure your computer is virus/malware-free before attempting to install your new antivirus. http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2....emoving_Malware Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic! http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/#FAQ Quote
Guest Saga Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Why don't you recommend AVG? I'd be most interested to know since AVG is usually the app that gets installed; however, if there is a better option then I would most certainly consider it. Thanks, Saga It has been too problematic for me to be comfortable with it over the past few years. AVG 8.0 in particular has had more than its share of false-positives. Now, all antivirus programs have false-positives but AVG seemed to have a lot more of them and serious ones, too. I also don't think they are very quick to get updates out. I'm basing this on the free version; I can't speak for the commercial version. Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic! http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/#FAQ Quote

Additionally, many of those same folks have uninstalled AVG 8 in favor of Avira's free Antivir. Pete -- 1PW @?6A62?FEH9:DE=6o2@=]4@> [r4o7t] Quote

Second worst is McAfee anything. In every case of machines that were uncompromised, they were running the Corporate version of Symantec and were locked down. -- - Igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum. - Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented worker" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist" spam999free@rrohio.com (remove 999 for proper email address) Quote
Guest Saga Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Thank you both. I remember the "good ole days" when AVG was recommended over Norton because Norton was a resource hog. I wonder if they'll say the same about Avira years from now :-S Saga -- "1PW" <barcrnahgjuvfgyr@nby.pbz> wrote in message news:gnf455$nr9$1@news.motzarella.org... > On 02/17/2009 11:12 AM, Saga sent: >> Why don't you recommend AVG? I laugh at such vague statements that are baseless. WHOO HOO MY AVG WORKS!!!!!!! Quote
