I.E. Starts Up With Computer?

Friday, when I turned on my computer, instead of the desktop displaying, it

automaticaly launched Internet Explorer and instead of my normal homepage

(msn.com) it displayed an "ATT My Account Log On" page (or at least that's

what the page said. Here is the URL:

https://cprodmasx.att.com/commonLogin/igate...ON=&OLDSESSION=

This has happened three times now when I turn my computer on. When I get

the ATT page on I.E. I close I.E. and relaunch it. When I relaunch it, I get

an error message saying I.E.has encounter a problem and needs to close. If I

try a second or third time, I.E. will launch and open on my default homepage

(msn.com)

Is this some kind of virus/malware thing that I need to be concerned about

or is it just a computer glitch? Thank you for the help.

Win XP Hm SP3, current AVG antivirus running.

I contacted my ISP (ATT.Yahoo DSL). They say the URL is theirs but they

don't know why I.E. autostarts at Windows log on or why I.E. starts on that

web page. My normal home page is Yahoo.com not the strange "ATT Log On" page

that displays. Is this some kind of strange homepage "Hijack" or is my

computer just seriously malfuntioning? I've never had a computer start up

and automatically start I.E., then display a page that is not my default home

page. Very strange. I've run AVG and it doesn't find anything.

It is strange. However, AT&T has been having a boatload of problems in our

part of the country over the last few days (I'm in central California) so

maybe it's them and not you. Here are a few suggestions:

1. Make sure the username & password are entered correctly in the DSL modem

or router, depending on your equipment. First see what the gateway IP

address is by:

Start>Run>cmd [enter] (now you will have the command prompt)

At the command prompt, type: ipconfig /all [enter]

Make a note of the gateway IP address. It's probably something like

192.168.1.254 unless you're using a router. If you're using a router, then

it will be something like 192.168.1.1.

You need to enter the configuration utility of the modem or the router and

re-enter your DSL username and password. If you post back with what

equipment you have, I can give you more specific instructions.

2. Of course, there is the good old-fashioned "power cycle" the modem which

means to unplug it, wait about 30 seconds, and plug it in again. If you

have a router then unplug the modem, unplug the router, wait the 30

seconds, then plug in the modem (wait for its lights to come on and

stabilize), then plug in the router.

You might want to check in the AT&T forums over at DSL Reports

(www.dslreports.com). They handle far more than just DSL but they also have

ISP-specific forums. I'll be heading over there myself in a little while to

see if I can find out what's going on with AT&T here for my clients.

What Malke said.

Is this still happening? Have you changed any settings in IE Tools |

Internet Options | Connections (including LAN Settings)?

Assuming you have IE configured to load at Startup, it sounds like IE's

opening and trying to connect before your DSL connection's up & running.

Change your home page to Blank and see if the same thing happens.
