Guest t-4-2 Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 I was doing a scan with Spybot Search & Destroy, while it was running there was a Hint of the Day appeared inside the Spybot window. ( See screenshot ). So, if I had one of those 3, I should ditch Spybot ? P.S. I do NOT have anyone of those security programs. My question is merely curiosity. Any comment/insight ? t-4-2 Quote

The other two no. I have seen McAfee miss "old" viruii, even when fully updated. Mike Ober. Quote

McAfee was one of the possible false positives. DDW -- Reply via this group No email please Quote

Just my guess. You could ask the Spybot Search & Destroy support team about that particular 'hint'. I suspect some sort of active 'rootkit detection' or similar is why. Quote
Guest Sam Hobbs Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Their definition of spyware I think is incorrect. The "spy" in spyware means that by definition the (spyware) software is doing something you were not informed of. In the case of the software described, such as antivirus software, people are aware that they are doing some advanced technical stuff that we do not understand but it is necessary for the intended purpose. The message you are receiving is probably the result of vendors that use spyware trying to redefine the term spyware to make it sound as if spyware is the same as other software that is commonly used. It's the "mal" in malware that depends on objectivity (especially for the trojan). Adware and spyware are not always malware. Add to that the practice of hiding security programs from malicious programs - the "good" kind of stealth - to the need for "other" security programs to be able to detect such as a "rootkit". The 'good guys' have had to resort to the same kinds of techniques as the 'bad guys'. The techniques themselves are neither bad nor good - that is where objectivity comes into play. > In the case of the software described, such as antivirus software, > people are aware that they are doing some advanced technical stuff > that we do not understand but it is necessary for the intended > purpose. ??? > The message you are receiving is probably the result of vendors that > use spyware trying to redefine the term spyware to make it sound as if > spyware is the same as other software that is commonly used. ??? > "t-4-2" <dhuang1@cogeco.ca> wrote in message > news:uRLVAZdpJHA.3572@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... >>I was doing a scan with Spybot Search & Destroy, while it was running >>there >> was a Hint of the Day appeared inside the Spybot window. >> ( See screenshot ).
