Guest AliceZ Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 I have WinXP sp3 and yesterday looked in my Control Panel for the Security Center icon, but it was not there. Does anyone know what might have happened and how can the Security Center icon be returned? (I did a Malwarebytes scan and it came up with three Security Center exceptions. I contacted MB and they said just mark them 'ignore.' I think MB might have recently included something in their program to check if MS updates were on Automatic or not. I've alwasy turned OFF the Automatic Updates, because I like to do the updates myself rather than have them installed automatically in the 'background.') Quote
Guest PA Bear [MS MVP] Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 What happens when you do the following?... Start | Run | (type or copy/paste) WSCUI.CPL | [OK] If Security Center opens, what status is reported for anti-virus, firewall, and Automatic Updates? What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed WinXP SP3? Has a(nother) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)? -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ AliceZ wrote:<span style="color:blue"> > I have WinXP sp3 and yesterday looked in my Control Panel for the Security > Center icon, but it was not there. > Does anyone know what might have happened and how can the Security Center > icon be returned? > > (I did a Malwarebytes scan and it came up with three Security Center > exceptions. Guest AliceZ Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Thank you. Damn NIS again. Yes, Norton placed their Security Control icon in control panel and when I looked in NIS, I found a box that was checked to not show Windows Security Center icon. Guest PA Bear [MS MVP] Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 YW. You chose to allow the Norton Security Center to become the default, whether you were aware of it or not.
