I keep getting this pop-up on my new HP laptop. My on-board security tells

me it's from an unknown source. What the heck is it? Google search is not

turning up many inquiries about this, and no answers; only place to download

the thing. My own theory is that Norton, etc put this stuff out to keep you

paronoid! Is anyone else getting this?

You are right that a Google search is inconclusive. Here are a few

suggestions:

1. Search for the VersionManager.exe file on your system. Perhaps its

location will give a clue as to its origin. You can also right-click on the

file, left-click on Properties, and see if there is a Version tab. The

Version tab often gives an indication of the company who made the file.

2. Do clean-boot troubleshooting. If the popups stop, then add back items

one at a time.

What did the popup say? If there is a message, please quote it exactly

without paraphrasing.

It's most likely some HP pre-loaded crap on the machine.

Quite possibly it is, but unless the OP can narrow it down to the actual

program, he can't make an informed decision as to whether or not to let it

run.

Searching C: located versionmanager.exe in c:\program

files\hewlett-packard\hp advisor. HP.COM support for the laptop shows

it as part of HP Advisor and can be disabled by selecting the wrench

(preferences) in HP Advisor and de-selecting the option to have it run

automatically at start up.

The next time I opened it it was selected again but it didn't start up

on that boot.

Deselected it again and will see if it remains dormant until I open HP

Advisor again.

For something that's in your face every time you boot your machine they

don't make it particularly easy to find where to turn it off.

Are your the OP? If yes, glad that sorted it for you. Even if no, thanks for

finding this information and taking the time to post it.

OP (original poster?), no, just new to Vista and new to Forums and

becoming enamored with the idea of friends helping friends succeed.

Especially when common problems plague so many people and the answers

are within reach, just well concealed. I just wanted to get a loved one

off my back because she would much rather be the nagger than the naggee

and a PC that requires administrator passwords to run mysterious

programs every time you turn it on is a PC that is not long for our

office. Makes one wonder how many advances have been made in our

evolution based on similar motivation. Cheers!
