Guest Ondrej Sevecek Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 hello, Vista SP1 requires NetBIOS to connect to fileshares over VPN connections. Any planned changes for SP2 or 7? o. Quote
Guest Robinson Zhang [MSFT] Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 Hi, Based on my knowledge, Windows Vista require NetBIOS over TCP/IP port 139 since Windows Vista does not add the RAS adapter GUID for SMB to the lanmanserver, lanmanworkstation, and SMB registry keys. It's a known bug on Windows Vista and it have been fixed in Windows Vista SP1. So, Windows Vista SP1 doesn't require NetBIOS over TCP/IP port 139 to connect to fileshares over VPN connections. For your reference: Windows Vista clients cannot access network shares over a VPN or dial-up connection http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsvistanow/arch...ows-vista-clien ts-cannot-access-network-shares-over-a-vpn-or-dial-up-connection.aspx You cannot access SMB shares on a corporate network through a Remote Access Service (RAS) connection from a computer that is running Windows Vista http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;933468 Hope it helps. Guest Ondrej Sevecek Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 I have just checked the registry keys, but my LanManServer and LanManWorkstation do not contain the VPN guids. I am running Vista SP1. How could this happen? My installation is clean Vista SP1 64bit installation. No config migration. I can send you the relevant registry keys if you are interested. thank you very much. o. Guest Robinson Zhang [MSFT] Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Hi, Thank you for your reply. On the page of KB933468 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;933468), we can find the following information. Registry information To use one of the hotfixes in this package, you do not have to make any changes to the registry. Modifying registry keys is a workaround. Windows Vista SP1 includes KB933468 (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749061.aspx), so the current situation(No changes in registry) should be normal. Thank you for your understanding. Hope it helps. Robinson Zhang Microsoft Online Support Quote
Guest Ondrej Sevecek Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 the reaso why I ask is that my own Vista SP1 64bit computer actually cannot access the fileshares unless there is NetBIOS enabled on the VPN interface and the target computer has NetBIOS enabled and exceptions in its local firewall opened. o. Guest Ondrej Sevecek Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 if you like, I can give you wireshark/netmon traces of the communication. o. Guest Robinson Zhang [MSFT] Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Hi, Thank you for latest reply. I understand that the issue still persists in the Windows Vista SP1 64bit computer. Given the situation, could you please help me confirm the following things? Thank you for your cooperation. 1. When the issue occurs? Does it begin since clean installation? 2. Do you have other client computers? If so, does the issue occur on all Windows Vista computers or specific computer? 3. Do you have Windows XP computer? Does it work fine on VPN? According to KB933468 description, the issue should be resolved in Windows Vista SP1. However, I recommend to take the workaround on KB933468 to test it whether the issue can be resolved. If the issue can be resolved, it may be a potential bug. If the issue still persists, the issue can be caused by a specific factor. Please download the Microsoft Product Support Reporting tool from the link below: http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b...e5-a579-30b0bd9 15706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE This information will help us to determine what factors are involved with the issue(s) we are experiencing with your system. The MPS utility will take about 5 to 15 minutes to gather information. This can be run at any time and will utilize minimal processor time and memory and is quite unobtrusive to clients currently accessing the server. It is required that the currently logged on user have Administrative rights in order to allow for proper operations of the MPS Reporting Tool. If you have any questions regarding the usage or operations of the MPS Reporting Tool please review the link below: http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b...e5-a579-30b0bd9 15706/MPSRPT_SetupPerf_Readme.txt On your system a CAB file will be generated for your convenience in the %systemroot%\MPSReports\Setup\<Report Type>\Cab directory called: %COMPUTERNAME%_MPSReports.CAB. The CAB file will contain the reports generated by the MPS Reporting Tool. Please use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the file and then give me the download address. In addition, please also upload Netmon traces of the communication to Windows Live SkyDrive. Thanks. Robinson Zhang Microsoft Online Support Quote
