Student fires gun in Mo. middle school

By MARCUS KABEL, Associated Press WriterMon Oct 9, 10:04 PM ET

Fascinated by the Columbine bloodbath, a 13-year-old boy in a dark green trenchcoat and mask carried an assault rifle into his school Monday, pointed it at students and fired a shot into a ceiling before the weapon jammed, authorities said. No one was hurt.

"Please don't make me do this," he was quoted as telling administrators before police arrested him and thwarted what they called a "well thought-out plan" to terrorize his school.

Police said a note in the student's backpack indicated he had planted an explosive in the school, but no bombs were found.

Lt. Geoff Jones said the boy's motives were unclear. School officials said the student had no major disciplinary problems.

The seventh-grader, whose name was not immediately released, pointed the gun at two students inside Joplin Memorial Middle School but was confronted by an administrator who tried to talk him into putting the gun down, Jones said.

The boy refused and fired a shot into the ceiling of an entryway, police said. He tried to continue firing but the rifle jammed, according to Jones. The student then left the building.

"We don't believe he was trying to fire at administrators or students," Officer Curt Farmer said.

Officers arrested the teen behind a nearby building. Police described his weapon as a Mac-90, a replica of an AK-47 assault rifle.

Superintendent Jim Simpson said police told him the boy had a fascination with the Columbine High shooting that left 15 people dead near Littleton, Colo., in 1999.

The only thing my 13 yo (soon to be 14) is interested in is boys. :( but yes, if you pay attention to your kids you should be able to see that something is going on. With all of this bs going on with kids i told my mom she she should be glad that all she had to worry about was drugs.

I have a small arsenal and she knows how to use all of them. She can also group shots with a .22 at 35 yds. about the size of a tennis ball. I am working on getting my 8yo daughter to be that good but i don't get to see her very much. The ammo stays in my safe, just so ya know.

My dad is a gun dealer and my sister and I have always been around firearms of all kinds. Always known how to use them if we had to...dad ran a lot of gun shows on weekends and we stayed home alone. My son is 9 closer to 10, he is learning how to not only use them, but respect them. I think that is where a lot of parents go wrong, they are not teaching the kids how to respect and sometimes have a little fear of the firearm.

If i was tipped off to my son being "fascinated" with the columbine massacre, his ass would be at a counseling session so fast. My whole family would make sure he wouldn't have access to ANY firearms. Parents just cannot get away with turning a blind eye anymore! We can't just think the kids are going through a fase and they will grow out of it, especially when their fase involves violent behavior!

Yes. Education is the key. Instead of the schools being afraid of the word “guns” they should be teaching kids everything about them. This is the basakward society we live in.

Teach them how they work. Tell them to presume they are all loaded unless they themselves checked. If they don't know how to check it, leave it alone and get a parent. They need to know what to do if one is found and never, never, never put your finger on the trigger or pull it unless you are aiming at something and plan on shooting. My son knows all my guns are loaded (even though they might not be). He also knows what to do if he finds one or a friend is playing with one. I can't be that lucky to expect his friends to have the same knowledge and there lies the problem.

The first thing i stress to them is safety. The last thing before pulling the trigger, safety off, the first thing after safety on. Just like on parris island.

In my opinion kids don't get the ass whoopings that they need. ( i include myself in that statement) My "granny was one of those who would make me go get a switch off of the bush so she could beat my bare ass with it. Whatever i had did, i DID NOT do it again. As i got older i realized that that woman loved me as much as my own momma did and she only beat me to teach me right from wrong.

That being said i c&p'ed erics notebook to my documents and am still reading them. I think at 38 i should be able to read them and not become obsessed.

Agreed! The counseling session would start after the ass whooping!

I am so strict, before my kid goes to someones house, i ask, do you have any guns? Do your children know safety? It just reminds some people that "there is another kid in the house and maybe i should double check my guns so my kid doesn't decide to play show and tell with them". I personally don't have any around my house, I have a step son that is with us every other weekend and he is only 3 and WAY to curious! I was lucky with my son, we didn't have that problem.

OK...who has the flaming homo flag colors on his car?? That is what I thought. I think that the 24 car also has a box of tissues right next to his seat in the car! LOL!

ANYWAY...getting back to the subject...

I am curious to see how many people agree with the metal detectors in school...I do, and honestly, I have no problems with uniforms.

Parents who do not know something is wrong with their kids are in complete denial. I actually knew a woman who would dust her son's room and bypass the cocaine lines on the mirror on his bureau, and then fight with her relatives that he didn't use cocaine? Her son was a cocaine addict since he was 13, and his trail of arrests and claims of abuse meant nothing to her, she still refuses to this day to admit it. DENIAL affects everybody.

Metal detectors are fine, but there still needs to be additional security in schools, if the teachers don't want to arm themselves, then there should be security with guns.

Teachers train to teach, not to defend themselves. I agree that there should be more security but given all of the 'non teaching' work that teachers already have to do, it should be supplied by an outside agency.

Dementia is just a state of mind.

It does seem that teachers have enough on their hands with trying to teach children AND being terribly underpaid...asking them to become Rambo as well seems like a stretch.

Well obviously you can't arm them all. Most are probably gun illiterate. But if one elects to go through the say a gun and safety class, they should have the option of being armed. Then you would still have armed guards. If I have a permit I should be able to carry it.

Latley rumours have been going through my school that these two derranged and fucked up kids that go to my school want to shoot some people... And yes, they wear trench coats.

I remember this one kid who you could say I was okay friends with, like the greeting type friends... He moved to a different school. The school was a pretty rough school and he ended up getting into a fight with this guy who stabbed his little brother. The guy brought a gun to school and shot the stabber in the calf. My "aquintence" shortly after that was deported.

I would have NEVER though of him to have any kind of weapons too. Even though he followed that whole thuggish lifestyle.

Taking it up the poopchute from Allah since 1990.

You have a good point there; I have worked for a few companies that have security and it always amazes me that you can't get past security with fingernail clippers nowadays in a financial institution but any psycho can get into a school?

If George Bush is too be believed, better communication is ALL we need...

I think people who leave their guns unsecured where children can get them should be charged as accessories to the crimes the children commit with those weapons...that might send a message to idiots who ignore their children and don't take notice of them being obsessed with Columbine (for instance).
