snafu Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 Or country is the most diverse county on the planet. And when the “Diversity” slogan or thyme came on the scene I grasp the idea whole hardily. Why not recognize and accept other cultures. After all we are all American and we need to get along. We need to learn and respect our neighbor’s cultures. I work in with a rather large work force and it is very diversified. When I started a few decades ago, English was the only language accepted on the workroom floor. If your gonna talk at work everybody should know what your talking about. And by some, it was thought to be rude. Now that we strive for diversity, we tolerate other language as to not step any toes. This inadvertently has created small racial clicks (mostly Filipino and Korean). You try to fix something and then it gets out of hand and you get the adverse affect you were striving for. I now despise diversity as the way it is perceived now. It is driving steaks between our diverse cultures. I want a united nation. Is this possible? snafu Posted October 27, 2006 Author Posted October 27, 2006 Tori wanted me to post this topic but didn't realize I already had with no responses. I would like to reiterate that it’s never “all of them or those people” I’m not that way. I have one co-worker that is Filipino and when another Filipino will talk Tagalog he will answer in English for the benefit of people that don’t know their language. People need to let go of their past and look to the future together. Quote "You can't stop insane people from doing insane things by passing insane laws. That's just insane!" I work in an environment where spanish and english clash....we have some that speak the EXTREME basic english (hi...no..yes etc) to those that are bilingual... I have been in a work situation for 3 years where I had to deal with all spectrums of english (and that includes working with 18 year olds telling me to "..get out their grill"..... so english is subjective... I see nothing wrong with trying to learn their language..as long as they try to learn yours.....meeting half way is a good thing for everyone in most situations... hell im happy that i have learned some basic spanish...it has helped me out immensely!! hugo Posted October 29, 2006 Posted October 29, 2006 At least we ain't France. Six decades after the end of the Holocaust, the prominent French Nazi-hunter Serge Klarsfeld said this weekend that French Jews would be best off leaving the country. "One of the lessons of the Holocaust is that even if you want to fight against a wave of anti-Semitism, the best is to leave if you can," Klarsfeld said in an interview with The Jerusalem Post during a visit to Israel. At the same time, Klarsfeld, who lives in Paris, said that he does not expect there be a great wave of Jewish emigration from France to either Israel or the US because most French Jews are well off. While clearly differentiating between the rise of Nazi power in the late 1930s and the situation in France today, Klarsfeld drew a direct parallel to the Holocaust, stating that history has proven it would have been best "had the Jews of Poland and the Jews of Austria left Europe when they could have." Klarsfeld's remarks come on the heels of reports that the Jewish Agency was planning to launch a campaign to persuade French Jews to immigrate to Israel to escape a wave of anti-Semitism. The French government reported earlier this month that it had recorded 180 incidents of attacks or threats against Jews or Jewish-owned property since the start of this year, attributed to an increasingly violent second- and third-generation Muslim population. With six million Muslims and 600,000 Jews, France has both the largest Muslim and Jews populations in Europe. ToriAllen Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 Diversity isn't the problem. It is a resistance to diversity that is the problem. People are more comfortable with what they know, be it language, race, or culture. Those minorities which are alike stick close together, because of fear or uncertainty, unwilling to give up their comfort zone of familiar culture. A truly diverse environment would not be susceptible to these problems. It is the same in any social context. If you go to a large party with just a few people you know there, chances are you will hang around the people you know. If you go to a large party where you know absolutely no one, you are much more likely to make an effort in meeting new people, but you will probably approach those you feel are the most like you. It is human nature. If everyone is not willing to step out of their comfort zone and make an effort to relate to others who are nothing like them, then it is not really the American ideal of diversity, but rather a collection of independent cultures that happen to live near each other. I love meeting people with different views and learning about different cultures, and my friends and acquaintances are a hodgepodge of various cultural beliefs. Vortex Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Point taken hugo... But the ground floor of accepting diversity is to try to understand people different than yourself (from race, color, culture etc).... its about understanding...pure and simple.. unfortunately the word is being shoved down so many peoples throats that it is like they are forced to get along with people whos personalities they dont get along with... Its like the world has been thrown back into highschool...and the cool kids are supposed to be nice to everyone and just cant seem to do so.....and at the other end the not so cool kids are killing off the ones who refuse to let them be cool.... wait...thats happening now in schools across the country!......
