How often should I run scan?

I'm running XP on an older Dell and currently have a "quick scan once a week (which does seem to be working alright) but being a true novice, I want to know if I should leave the scan as is or should I run a "FULL SCAN" and/or should I run my scan more often? Thanks guys!
