Why do Microsoft Security Essentials updates show as Optional Updates and not Recommended...

I'm wondering why Microsoft Security Essentials doesn't update itself in real time as the updates become available? I would say that 99% of the time I turn on my computer there is an update available as optional update of course cause Windows Update never notifies me of optional updates.
