Windows Live Mail - does not always make "ping" sound with incoming mail

When I open Windows Live Mail, I get the "ping" sound of new mail when all of my new mail is being downloaded. However, when I am working with another window open and a new e-mail arrives in my inbox, it almost never pings. Only occasionally do I get this sound, but usually - nothing...
