0x80508023 cannot scan usb drive

I just rebuilt HP Pavilion dv7-4285dx with Windows 7 64 Bit, after receiving "no boot device, reinstall OS" message on booting the computer. Tried to use HP Recovery Manager but to no avail. Removed hdd and tried to acess on another 7/ 64bit machine which initially recocgnized the drive and I was able to save the users data to an external USB device but after disconnecting that ext. drv the host machine started erratic behavior and force shut down necessary.came up with the "device install failure" msg. Now on this rebuilt machine I get the above error message; Microsoft Security Essentials error message 0x80508023, when trying to clean the original support (host) drive when connected by a USB port.
