All my Windows 7 desktop items have disappeared.

All my Windows 7 desktop items have disappeared.

They are present in C:usersmyusernamedesktop. 

If I create a new icon by right-clicking on the desktop,  it appears in that folder, but NOT on the desktop. 

 

I tried running the Microsoft Fixit tool - no fault found!!!!

All I can find on the internet relates to some DVD writing software I do not have or shortcuts to server programs, etc

None of my shortcut icons will appear, but gadgets are OK.

Any ideas?
