My computer will not update. It gets just about finished and I lose my connection. Why ?

I went to run my scan for the week and it ran fine.  Then, I went to run any updates

and I hit Update and it searches, then downloads, then installes and just about when it's

finished installing, the screen kind of blinks real quick and I lose my connection.  My computer

is potentially unsafe now and I am afraid to go on to the internet for anything.  I've never had it

do this before.  HELP ??
