Unable to update - Window installer file(s) missing / corrupt? Error Code8004FF01 & 641

Hi, can anyone help!

 

 

I have search for hours/days for a solution to this problem without success.

 

 

I cannot install any Microsoft Updates or any updates from other programs (i.e. Skype, Yousendit, etc etc). 

When running windows update the files seem to download and start to progress OK but then fail with the error codes 8004FF01 & 641.

When trying to update other programs, Skype for instance, it comes up with the message "The windows installer service could not be accessed".

 

 

I have check the Windows Installer service and it is set to manual.  When I try to start the service it reports "Windows could not start the windows installer service on the local computer - Error 2 - The system could not find the file specified"

 

 

It appears that the windows installer is corrupt but how do I go about repairing this?

 

 

Any assistance is very much appreciated.  I cant be the only one in the world with this issue!
