I have Windows XP Prof. and would like to upgrade it to Windows 7

I have a desktop with Windows XP Professional and would like to change it to Windows 7, which I have on my Laptop.   I don't know much about Desktop computers and Laptops so please explain a little more rhan just the basics if it is possible.                                                                                                                   

The friend? who helped me until about 6 month ago seems not to want to contact me anymore                                                                                                                 He tried several times t connect desktop and laptop but

never managed to finish the connection.                                                                                                                 I tried everything I could think of but it doesn't work.                                                                                                                                                                                              

But first I would like to know the possibility to change from XP Prof. to Windows 7.
