Widescreen display settings in Windows XP - correct settings not available

I recently purchased a widescreen monitor (Samsung SyncMasterS23A350H) recommended display resolution 1920x1080 (16:9).  This setting is not available in my display settings. The only 16:9 setting - 1280x720 - only makes things even more stretched, with

black spaces above and below.  Device manager says my display adapter is SiS 760. All devices are installed and working properly.  Do I need a new graphics card?  Can I download anything (free?) to get the right settings on Windows XP?  What's the best solution?
