How can I "freeze" my desktop items in the places where I want them?

Before we had to clean up a virus from my Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop, my desktop "items" were all arranged the way I needed them to be for me to refer to quickly.Afterwards, right now, they do not stay in the positions I place them in - top left; top right; in categories, etc. They are ALL on the left side, top to bottom completely mixed up! It's so hard to find what I need in order to continue my work, after turning on my laptop, again A Dell Inspiron 1720 and I have Windows Vista.Can you please help me?CynthieC
