System update updates microsoft windows

I have a fairly new Toshiba laptop which has replaced my old Dell working on Vista. The Toshiba works on Windows 7 premium, I am utterly amazed at the amount of updates that are coming thru,  virtually every time I switch it off,  it updates. This is approx

every other day, I have used Microsoft from Windows 95 onwards & have never had an operating system that updated as often as this, its as tho they only did half the job when it was released and are still trying to fix it now.

 My main problem is that when I shut down at night it goes for an update and at times it takes ages, there have been a number of times it has still been updating when I come down in the morning,  its rediculous. the troubleshooter finds no problem at all.

I find I need to unplug and remove the batteries to get it back working again.
