Does Microsoft ever make unsolicited calls to customers with advice about solving Windows problems?

I received a phone call today from someone who says he is with the Microsoft organization, saying my computer was showing problems and slowing down due to attempted attacks by malware and spyware, etc.  He asked me to turn on the computer and he would guide

me through a "clean up" process.  I did not agree and asked him to call back.

This may be legitimate, but I would like this confirmed by Microsoft Support please.
