starting from orignal startup disk & updating service packs

I had been updating my service packs regularly but last week couldn't start my computer so I decided to start from zero reinstal my original startup disk which is service pack 1 but now I can't update.  Microsoft say I must instal either SP1a or SP2 before

I can upgrade to SP3.  When I try sp1a it timesout, when I try sp2 I get ino a circle on startup.  It opens a Bios screen (I think -black with white type) suggesting I start windows normally but it just returns to the same screen(none of the other options

work either).

The solutions for updating service packs on the microsoft/windows sites don't seem to deal with this and those that do find related to service packs 1and two sites seem to take me in circles one link leads to another and then back to the start.  Can you

give me a solution please?
