Sixty years ago that boy would be giving that speech at about 55 miles an hour as hes dragged from behind a pickup truck. He should be thankful our society has adapted too a more civilized attitude toward non-whites. Actually we had to. If we hadn't changed quickly in the '50s and '60s, than I feel a full on race war was inevitable.

 

That ****** is about 50-60 years too late with his tired rhetoric. His bullshit would have meaning if we didn't have so many black doctors, politicians, law enforcement, judges and so on. What I don't understand, is that the blacks had very little to do with the increase in civil rights towards non-whites just like women had very little to do with the increase in civil rights towards women just like immigrants had very little to do with the increase in civil rights for immigrants. It was the white leaders who sympathized with the civil rights movement and protestors to change the policies to what we have today. The protestors (women, minorities, immigrants, etc.) might have had loud mouths but it was the white male leaders with the power who sparked the change. That is what this guy doesn't understand.

Take a politician that doesn't seem to have an impressive platform. The politician can move for reform and once rights begin to be extended to the minority class (women, homos, Mexicans, blacks), he has become the beneficiary of an entirely new voting base that never before existed.

 

Education was something that was restrained from the blacks for so long. Once they gained their freedom from slavery this trend continued. Only too late did the white society realize the detrimental effects caused by having such a large demographic without education. The ripple effects form this are still noticeable today. Stupidity is the leading cause of crime, and there are more blacks in prison than in college. It is the ignorant whites of the past that are at fault for setting this trend. However it gets to a point where holding the past accountable becomes self-destructive.

 

As for commercialism. Take a package of toilet paper or paper towels. These packages were among the first to utilize bilingual, two-sided packaging. Not because they respected the Spanish minority. They know Mexicans have money, and they want it.

I was thinking about this when typing my previous reply but why would such politicians expect to garnish the votes of people who could not yet vote (serious question- not sarcasm)? Do you think they were expecting future votes? Why would the incumbents jeopardize the votes of their current constituents? This is why I think their political stance in regards to civil rights was based on their compassion and personal morals in that people should not be denied rights based on sex and race.

Seriously, I think a lot of white folks back then honestly realized how bad it was for our society to contain such a large 'oppressed' demographic. I'm sure also many whites just saw the overt racism for what it was, ugly.

 

When it comes to politics it boils down to how large of a demographic can you please. If you side too strong with gays, than you alienate the religious base. If you sided with the blacks during the civil rights era, you ran the risk of alienating the white votes. All said and done, I think the blacks of the time did a great job perforating the legislative system and owing allegiance to the white politicians that would push their agenda. Those whites that did help them earn their civil rights, probably did so with a considerable amount of compassion toward the blacks disposition. But there was a great benefit awaiting them if they succeeded. Millions of new votes that would be all theirs.
