Because 4 wheelers are known for handling even the most impassable terrain, quad bikes were made to be street legal so that its impressive features can be enjoyed even on public highways. Street legal quads are generally seat-equipped vehicles that travel on low pressure tires with steering control provided by the handle bars. These are operated like the usual motorcycles but there are two additional wheels that provide more stability even at low acceleration. These are actually kinds of ATV quads that are designed to handle a wider variety of terrains and are legal to be run on roads. Where did they originate? The 4-wheeled road legal quad bike evolved from the 3-wheeled bikes used in agriculture. These vehicles gained the people's interest and so manufacturers updated the vehicles operation and started to create quad bikes useful for general purposes during the late 1980s. The market interest continued to increase in the 90's and manufacturers in China and Japan began exporting the ATVs into different countries. What types of road legal quads are there? There are several types of street legal quads. Models are categorized into sport-racing types, automatic quads, and miniature quads for children. But generally, engines of these road legal dirt bikes range from 50cc quads to 950 cc in addition to 650 cc H1, 951 cc H2 and 700 cc H1 engines. Some road legal quads are manufactured without the sway bar and instead feature 4 stroke engines together with independent suspension on all wheels. There are also several automatic models that no longer require changing of gears at every movement. Smaller children's quads are also now being produced. How much do they cost? Prices are relative to the features that a quad is equipped with. Apparently, the more features a street legal quad has, the higher it costs. Of course, the brand name and reputation also contributes to pricing. A baseline bike can start at $1,000, but a decent road legal quad bike up to $5,000 or more. It really comes down to how many extra 'bells and whistles' you want. When purchasing one, consider bargain deals and sales offered by most stores so you can buy your quad bike at a more reasonable price.
