Friðbjörn Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 This is part two of a project I like to call LP 403, advanced course. Stupid title anyway. Last time I did one song, In the End. This time I'm doing a bigger thing, comparing Hybrid Theory and Meteora, which is huge. Here I go: HT and Meteora. Do you have to say more? These are two of my favorite albums ever, and I doubt you can find better numetal albums. In the numetal world and among the normal numetal fan, I think HT would score higher. The reason is how raw, rough and heavy original it is. If you ask me, Meteora is the older brother of HT. Meteora is much more professional, grown up, mellow, and the sound quality has been improved. That's exactly why I prefer HT. It's heavier, it's rawer, it's less mature. I like that, HT kind of says, 'rock on!' while Meteora says 'rock on, but let's not get in over our heads here', that's how I see it. Mike himself has described Meteora as an album with more craftsmanship and every member of the band has really stepped up their part. Although HT wasn't as heavy as LP intended in the first place, it's really heavy. You'll ask an LP hater, they'll say, oh, they're so soft, and they will be wrong. HT is a great example of a good heavy metal album. That's what caught the world's attention, and is the reason for LP's success today. Meteora is heavy too, but it certainly isn't as heavy as HT. We have songs like Faint, Don't stay and Lying from you, but they don't have the same feel, the same touch or the same undertone as the best songs of HT. They have the Meteora undertone, and the sound and playing of instruments has definately been improved drastically, which is one of the things where Meteora scores higher for me. Actually Faint has that touch, and is probably the only song off Meteora that could've been on HT, if we exclude the lyrics. Now that's one thing, the lyrics. Very much like KoRn, LP has developed their music and especially their lyrics. For KoRn it took about five albums, but for LP, it took one. I'm not sure whether I like that. Actually BTH is (along with Faint) the only real classic of Meteora. It goes into a group of historical LP singles along with OSC, ITE and more great songs. Meteora has great tracks, but none except these 2 really can count as timeless hits, as so many songs fit into that category on HT. You can read between the lines that Chaz comes a lot more into the songs on Meteora. On HT he had a smaller role, most songs had already been written. Chaz gets to make more decisions on Meteora. For instance, Papercut is a song that any rap/rock group could've done and would've done, but they would've excluded the bridge cos rap doesn't really have bridges. If we take the bridge out, and change the lyrics, we have a Quarashi or a Beastie Boys song. Rapping to rock, not just beat, and really no singing. Chester does do the chorus, but he doesn't really sing. If you "sing" along, you'll notice that you can talk the words. Of course they sound better the way Chaz does them, cos you can sing anything, whether it's rap or anything else. Chaz likes to be a little mellow, and Mike sometimes too, but this time I think the other guys agreed to have it that way. Critics say this album sucks because it's the same style as HT. I disagree. First of all, if no one can use their style on multiple albums then this isn't really a free world and everyone would make aweful album because they would always have to change style. Second, Meteora isn't the same style as HT, at least not all songs. You notice that HT has a lot more of heavy riffs, and even the mellow songs of HT, Runaway and PMA have metal riffs. That's not the case on Meteora. Well, out of the more mellow songs, FTI has a heavy riff. If we take Numb, that song barely has any guitar at all. And although they say they have all these different styles going on (which they have), it's mostly rock. I came into listening to LP as a rock fan. Numb isn't much of a rock song. Sure, it's a numetal song, and a fine song, but it's not heavy enough to impress me. Back to the lyrics. While HT basicly describes every aspect of teenage angst and your everyday anger, depression, loneliness and all these down feelings, Meteora is more optimistic in many of it's songs. SIB is a good example, while on Hit the Floor, the lyrics style is basicly the same as HT. If you take Chaz's parts on HT and Meteora and compare them, you'll see HT is about his horrible childhood, whilst I think Meteora is about his teens, his years of uncertainty and will to find stability. So on the next album I think Chaz will write about how life's so much better than it used to be for him, while of course some songs will be pure angst somewhere in between the 'life's good now' songs. Concusion:2 great albums, both good at different things. I'm not gonna list those things, it'd take hours. I don't think Meteora's as good as HT, but when I remember that it's a sophomore album, I instantly change my mind. You can't just say about an artist, they should've done this, they should've done that. LP came up with 2 great albums, I will await the next one with great expectations. I hope this was of any use to you. Quote [broken External Image]:http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/2784/lpfas08mostintelligentym8.jpg
partOFmeLP77 Posted March 18, 2005 Posted March 18, 2005 i agree that they're both great albums. I think that Meteora is the better one though, because it has a nice feel to it, kindof like a story, and my favorite song, don't stay is on it. By the way, what really is Numetal, i've heard of it, but is that what LP really is? Quote Visit the 24 zone. Like Medal of Honor? Join my clan! Click Here! my unofficial song abbreviation thread! pprkuttheory Posted March 18, 2005 Posted March 18, 2005 i like HT more..the songs just have more depth..while a couple of the songs on meteora sound like they were just thrown together too quickly and could've been done better....and how you said the sound is better and they have improved their skill since HT going on to write meteora, i like the sound on HT better than meteora, meteora almost sounds too perfect while HT sounds more "raw" and you put it earlier Quote [broken External Image]:http://cdnd.winduprecords.com/strata/banners/strataone468.gif

Friðbjörn Posted March 19, 2005 Author Posted March 19, 2005 What I was trying to say is what all comments seem to agree on, HT sounds better. It's so raw, HT is really metal. LP fans seem to like LP more for the rock than the hip hop, which makes sense, LP is a rock band. Quote [broken External Image]:http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/2784/lpfas08mostintelligentym8.jpg

I think they're both great, but in the future, i'd want one with the sound like HT (and a few songs fromMeteora) and then the story thing like Meteora. I thought meteora played like one big story, so i digged that. Quote Visit the 24 zone. Like Medal of Honor? Join my clan! Click Here! my unofficial song abbreviation thread! chestersrodie Posted March 21, 2005 Posted March 21, 2005 Personallly, I prefer, Meteora. My favorite ones are SIB, LFY, ETR, and FTI. If you'll notice, these are the more mellow songs. However, when I'm pissed off or just in the mood for something that rocks, I'm more likely to listen to HT, simply because it's louder, faster, and better for screaming along to. So I guess you're right about it being more raw. Quote

Now, what I forgot to mention in this comparison and should have been included, was that Mike and Chaz are doing better lyrics in the sense of they now write about the same things. Like in Forgotten, they're not talking about the same things really. That's one of the areas where they really stepped up on Meteora. I'm not saying the didn't do that on HT, it's just that now it's always about the same thing, not just almost every time. i_love_mike_shinoda2 Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 To me, I like Meteora better. I have no clue why, but HT was like more of an album where like you can listen to it when your happy. I cant really express how I feel about it or even why. Its just too complicated. Meteora I felt closer to the band and their lyrics are totally awesome and definetly relate to me. Most of those songs are the ones that are stuck in my head all day. Quote [broken External Image]:http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/5079/ilms2sig1bd.jpg Thanks Heart_LP for the siggy/ava!!

Friðbjörn Posted April 2, 2005 Author Posted April 2, 2005 OK, people, everyone listens to, understands and interpretes music different from the next person, no one has exactly the same opinions as I (for example) on HT.
