A cultural question that needs answers.

Ok, first off, don't let the title fool you. This won't be some Ancient Greece-educational-arrogance question.

 

All I'd like to know, is; what is the appropriate response to the question "what's up?"?

 

I hear that more and more, and never know what to say. What's one supposed to say to this? Please help me out here.

Basically, you answer it the same way you would if I were to ask, 'What's goin' on?'

E.g.

Person 1: What's up?

Person 2: Nothing much, just chillin'. You?

I ALWAYS respond with "The sky" and laugh at myself lol. I've been saying that for 3 years now and it never gets old ¬.¬ Occassionally I'll answer back with a short summary of what I did that day, and bore them to death =)

To people I don't know or don't wanna talk to, I say "nm u" =D Anyway aww, bless you! What a question:D Everytime I use it, the other person responds with "Nothing much, you?" which isn't really what I wanna hear lol.

 

You could always say "The Ceiling" as opposed to the sky =P Say anything you want ^.^

Josh is right, it basically means 'What's going on' or 'What's new'. I have to say this, one of my pet peeves is when I ask someone 'What's up' and they respond with 'Not much' or 'Nothing'. DAMNIT, there HAS to be something going on with your life. You're not sucked into a black hole of nothingness. Tell me how your day went, tell me how you're feeling, tell me something!. ARGH.

You know, it is quite funny, "what's up" is such a common greeting now, and we don't know why.

It's basically like saying.... (jeesh, can't even think of a synonym, lol)... what's going on, how are you, and all that general stuff, just to keep people informed.

I used to say pie then they go what then i got ceeling pie then it fell off like last month so now I just say nothin just chillin.... Or I make something up like 'building a bus that vibrates in a way so people crap themselves' :thumbsup:
