djwakka Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 Hmmm Having the backlight off on an iPod, you can't see much unless your in sunlight or in a fluorescent filled room. I've had a 3rd generation iPod, yeah, when it wasn't a fucking fad nor was it in style. Battery life sucked until the Nano and Video came. I have to say they improved it alot, because the battery life totally sucked before. With my H10 i have now, at least a week of daily use without charge. And it's replaceable on the fly so you can take it on my 28 hour transportation routes T_T I've had my share of Nano-ers and Video-ers, and they're not as slow as the 3rd gen. But they still have a hefty deal of latency in between songs. And photo slideshow? Forget it, it shortened the battery to a few short hours. Don't even get at me with video which is at a MAXIMUM of 2 hours with full charge. Might as well buy the 50$ more PMC-1000 or a Palmpilot because you get triple that amount of video playback. The video iPod is enjoyable, but you're not going to be able to watch ANY movie front to back or feed your craving for a TV series unless you're at the charger, which makes the video iPod meaningless since then, it is no longer portable. You just bought yourself a 2 inch screen TV, where you have to pay-per-view all of your channels, unless you pay for another iPod software that allows you to convert your freakin video files so they can become fucking iPod files. Sound is probably the worst in its class. Lack of actual EQ, it just gives you crap sound options to set it at. When it's at normal, the music sounds extremely flat, it's like they lowered the bass, highs, and mids from the original song. And the famous earphones seen everywhere. Ewww, complete shit compared to Shure E4Cs which is listed as the equivalent price. Can you hear me now? You wouldn't believe how little money it takes to make an ipod video, let alone a nano. It's ALL franchise. CNN editor reporting of the Nano LCD flaws "Apple released the product knowing the problems and led consumers to believe it was durable -- forcing them to shoulder the cost of replacing defective music players." "Rather than admit the design flaw when consumers began to express widespread complaints ... Apple concealed the defect and advised class members that they would need to purchase additional equipment to prevent the screen from scratching excessively" Apple has "failed to remedy the problem in any meaningful way" and claimed Apple deleted postings on its Web site that relate to the scratching problem. The video iPod that you paid $300 for was made with less half of that. $143.50. That circular button people go crazy for: $2.50. http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1338 Oh but alot of the money should go to labor right? Wrong. Apple moved much of it's mass production to parts of Asia and mostly China because labor is extremely cheap. 64 Cents per hour over there, as opposed to the average factory wage in the US which is $21.11/hour. http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/0,1518,368763,00.html Sorry, I did a report in tech class about the iPod and i wanted to back it up with facts like you wanted. Blue Sky Turtles Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 okay that guy must be so stupid to do this. because not only are Creatives are rip offs of Ipods, but you can't beat Apple products and it's really pointless cos they do give several warnings about hearing lost in the manual. that's only if you are smart to read the manual before you use your Ipod. The Flashing Fish Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 There are several FREE programs that will convert your files into MP4 format and into the other format as well. Also, iTunes now has a video converter built into it. On the box it's advertised that the battery life is 2 hours for a a video, so it wouldn't make a great portable DVD player. Instead, I put Linkin Parks live videos on there, as well as the music videos, each downloaded for free and converted for free. It really makes the time go by when I'm in study hall with nothing to do, so I just watch a couple live concerts. If you want to watch a movie, you can buy external battery packs that range from about 30-100 bucks, with the disposable batteries (external battery pack that uses replacable batteries) in the low dollar range, with another lithium battery in the higher dollar range. That's if you want to watch long lenght movies. The battery life is also underrated for the 5th generation iPods as well. And when you're listening to music, you can have the backlight turn off after a certain amount of time of not using the little touch pad or center button, extending battery life. But the front case does scratch relatively easily, but if you don't act like a dumbass with it, scratches shouldn't be a problem (I've had mine for about a month, and I've only kept it in the little case it came with, and I don't really have any scratches). Also, I think I mentioned this before, but you can get over 2 hours of video life. A lot of it depends on the size of the file and how much you fast forward or rewind through the video (larger video sizes= better quality, but will kill the battery time, smaller video sizes= worse quality, but extends battery time. The reason being is because the iPod reads as much of the file as possible and stores it into the RAM, and each time it runs out, it refills the RAM (or buffer, which would be a bit more correct). The larger the video size, the less video that can get into the RAM, which means it will have to spin the hard drive more, which lessens battery life). Also, all of the figures on battery life and capacity is just averages. You may get more or less then what is on the box, it all depends. I'm not going to argue with you on the 3G iPods, as I never owned one, but I'm sure it was worse in battery life then the 5G iPod because since the 3G iPod, technology has gotten better, allowing Apple to make the iPod smaller and better. Stenners Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 Sony's portable player has 30hrs battery life, does Apples seem that good now? Apple I-Pod are at best middle market and are designed for casual music listeners if u look at the tech specs u will see apple is deffinatly not THE best mp3 player out there, its just fashionable. numbStruck Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 What stenners said..i've compared my mp3 (its some weird brand) to my friends i-pod, and tech wise mine was alot better. Yup, the iPod is still better. Sony's portable player also doesn't have backlit color screen, video playback, nor a lot of room for songs, unless you're talking about a different model. The only one I could find was the one that cost about 110 bucks, and only had 512 megs of space for songs. iRivers MP3 player is 300 bucks for 20 gigs of space, with no video playback. The only benefit is that it gets 16 hours of battery life. The one that plays video is 500 dollars, only holds 20 gigs of space, but gets you about 5 hours of video playback, a plus. For the iPod, all I have to do is shell out about 50 bucks for an external battery, then I get about the same battery life for less money and more hard drive space. The creative knock off of the 5G iPod has about the same specs as the iPod, but is about 30 dollars more then the 5G iPod, and you can only get a maximum of 30 gigs. The current iPod is the best for your money right now. I don't know about the 4G iPods and before, so I can't comment on those. If you want to compare models, post some links, and I'll gladly compare with you. Quote
Clogz Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 The Ipod gets away with all of this simply for one reason - its simple to operate, and its fun to play with and look at. Preposterous, true...but when put to the facts it does indeed prove to be true. I wouldn't want one anyway, and only for one reason: they are too small, and I would break it. Read my freakin post above, 16 hours is probably the smallest benefit of all of it's features and specs. Yet, Pod keeps imitating it's competitors. People need to stop thinking the false assumption that they were the originators. First iRiver released the first Hard Drive MP3 players, and iPod spawns generations and generations of iPods. Then the iRiver PMCs came to be, one of the still best media players out there. Once you buy one, it's not gonna depreciate in value like the iPod video. About a year and a half after that, OMG, PORTABLE VIDEO PLAYER?!! iPod's multi-million dollar marketting franchise kicks in. Creative Zen have created mediocre video/mp3 media players in a rush to compete with the iPods, but iRiver hasn't yet. Stay in tune for that one. And neither has Sony. Battery life and Storage arent everything, the latest Sony mp3 player comes in 2,5 and 20GB storage thats the one im on about. Video playback is overrated I got my phone that can do that anyways... But when it comes to sound quality I-Pod is poor and they cover that up with supplying some of the nastiest headphones you can get with it. Sure the Ipod has benefits such as ease of use and its high storage. The were portable video/mp3 players around 2 years BEFORE the Ipod video Phillips & I-river being examples. The EQ on I-Pod's is soooooo bad I got a Sony Walkman from about 4 years ago with a way better EQ and waayyyy better Sound technology and quality, sure its a discman but it plays back MP3's and Atrac3Plus and got it for around £90, I have that and an I-pod nano which I got for around £160..... shame to say I switched back to the discman several times and now only use ipod when I do more active things in a day but the Discman gets the majority. Even when the discman plays MP3's/Atrac3's I still get a good 30 - 40hrs battery life from rechargables and 80hrs from playing CD's, so the thing never cuts out when im out for a full day.
