Danish comic drawings of Muhammed

I'm assuming you've all heard about this, last fall a Danish newspaper called Jyllandsposten printed some comics/drawings making fun of Muhammed and muslims in general.

 

This week, the matter has escalated. Angry mobs have destroyed Danish embassies, Islamic extremists are telling people to kill Danish people wherever they are (well some want to kill all Scandinavians, and French people). There have been protests in most western countries where many muslims live.

 

I'm thinkin this hasn't gotten any real attention, since neither the US or the UK have had any trouble, but I'm starting to think this is real serious. This scares me, especially as a Nordic person, and having a close friendship with Danes.

 

Some people say we should protect freedom of speech, and muslims (those who are taking action) are just overreacting, others say this should not have been printed cause it's offensive...

I think it's a bit offensive, seeing as it's a rule in Islam not to draw Allah or Muhammed or any prophet, but I think they are overreacting. I mean, killing people? That's always too much.

 

What's everyone's opinion on this?

I'm sure if they published a cartoon on Jesus making fun of Christians or a cartoon on Moses making fun of the Jewish they would act the same way or some how similar to it. Also, it was fucking stupid in the first place for the Danish newspaper to publish something like that while making fun of Muslims. I'm not saying I agree with the way they are handling it but you have to look at it in a different way. I've been reading some Islamic books and I've noticed that Prophet Muhammad went through a lot to spread the religion of Islam, I think that's why Muslims are acting the way they are. Their prophet is someone not to be talked about or written about it a bad way. They aren't even allowed to impersonate him or his companions in movies or show pictures of him, that's another reason why I think they torched the building. So, I wouldn't call it overreacting.

And isn't there like rules or something against that?

Meh, an apology from the newspaper be in order but this has gone too far. And the newspaper should respect others religions and faiths. They did wrong but eh.. the fact that there could or have been deaths over this kinda disturbs me a lot.

I'll have to disagree with that cause there are so many jokes on other religions' gods and ppl just laugh about it. I've seen cartoon Jesus pics or hinduisms' gods pics so many time and ppl just laugh including muslims.

The christians nor hindus just go out and start killing ppl!, now when a joke was made about muhammed, suddenly it's not that funny anymore.

^ Yarr, agreed. If someone was to make a funny cartoon about Jesus [prophet muhammed = muslim jesus] then they would just laugh it off (I am not a Christian so don't accuse me of being biased).

 

Its like in The Simpsons, you get them pointing fun/making jokes at Christians, Jews and Hindus, though they have always avoided having a Muslim character in the series. Because if they were to air something that said anything remotely negative about their faith then they would just go crazy, bomb the studio or something probably

totally! when they make jokes about Jesus in Soth Park then ppl laugh their asses off or when they make jokes of Apu worshipping Ganesha that's extremly funny then how can they epect that ppl wont make Islam jokes?

I respect all religions ansd honestly my respect for muslims is getting lower after watching news everyday. It should'nt be like this, I'm wrong but seriuosly if some one tells me to name 5 muslims I know, I would say:

Hmm so they get offended by some cartoons? Well I get offended by people blowing up my fellow countrymen then walking through the very same city with banners supporting it.

Ok i agree that killing is going to far and the burning of the building is going overboard as well. I think the way to do it is just protest with a rally or something. I never heard that they would resort to killing and i highly doubt they would. Terrorists are the only ones I can think of that would actually kill people and those terrorists just give Islam a bad name. It's a stereo type i guess, but people have to realize that not all muslims are like that. With the Jesus and Jews cartoons, maybe i was wrong but there are some people that wouldn't find it funny but they don't turn to violence, unlike what these people did.

It's been all over the news, where I live at least. Extremist leaders have encouraged their followers to murder people from the countries that have printed the pictures.

Of course not nearly all muslims are like that.

Alls I can say is they arent helping the image the cartoon showed in the first place by sending bomb threats and setting buildings on fire.

 

But its a shame its the minority that ruin the Muslims rep but this minority are backing up the cartoon has to be said some people just arent that clever ^.^

Saw the news just a few mins ago and it's getting really seriuos. Sweden is getting involved in this too just cause Sweden decided to be on Danmark's side, but just for peace. Same thing with Norway.

You bet this is serious. There's talk of retaliation, to basicly any Nordic country. The Icelandic counselor in Amman, Jordan, took down the Icelandic flag today for safety reasons...

 

I just think both Christians and Muslims should exercise this tolerance that their religions rank so highly. It's quite clear in the religions, to be tolerant, and treat people good no matter what religion, but I can't say that's been the case lately. I mean come on, those two "different" religions warship the same god, just in different ways. It makes absolulety no sense to me to be fighting this much over religion.

Therefore it's more about skin color rather than anything else, sad as it is.

The Middle Eastern Muslims need to wake up and realize that we aren't them. If they can't deal with that, why then they can draw a cartoon of their own! *rolls eyes*

Yeah same. Comics = Comical strips of cartoons... Everyone knows that cartoons are meant to stereotype, exaggerate, or express a certain point of view. If it was occuring in the US, it wouldn't be a problem since it was protected by the First Amendment... And i don't think Mohammed is going to come back to life and press slander charges.

I saw the cartoon on the net and it showed the Prophet having a bomb on his head..which mainly shows him as a terrorist. Now how can they relate whats going on these days to someone who was here so many years ago. This was surely very offensive. I dont know about the "overreacting" and all but surely this wasn't right and they(danish) had no right to print such cartoons. Maybe the ppl there did go to far as to killing is concerned. Osama bin ladin; ok fine...a terrorist...but just because he's a muslim doesnt mean that all the muslims who came before were too.

They have already, I think it was in Bahrain, please correct me if I'm wrong. One was I belive Ariel Sharon saying "I hate Arabs" and he had Bush as a parakeet on his arm repeating it...

Alright then. But I read an interview with an expert in Islam history today, and he said there have been many drawings of Muhammed, done in the Islamic world, and that there had been no trouble.

So I think it's not the fact that the Danish journalists drew Muhammed, I think it's the nature of the drawings, one being as you said, Muhammed with a bomb on his head, that makes these people that have trashed embassies, so angry. Or also just the fact that those who drew Muhammed are not Muslim. Because humans in general tend to get mad when someone outside their religion starts doing something related to it. But of course, regardless of that, those drawings were pretty offensive. I myself would get pretty offended if someone drew Jesus doing something inappropriate, being Christian.

 

I'm glad we have muslims on here, it's good to get that point of view here, when something like this is discussed.

I just wish Muslims and Western nations could be like we are on here, just get along...
