Artist: New Young Pony Club

Album: Fantastic Playroom

Genre: Electronic/Indie

Introducing to you the New Young Pony Club, one of the other bands currenty infactuated with the rather comical NME stated 'Nu-Rave' movement. No the is absaloutly nothing rave about this band & saying so would be rather silly of you to be honest! This is more new wave then nu rave a band which offers dancey rock not too dis-similar to the likes of LCD Soundsystem with elements of CSS (Cansei De Ser Sexy) thrown in to. This group of young kids have been releasing quite a few EP's recently with this album quickly growing in antiscipation & has earnt them a succesful tour of the UK & a spot on the NME/Radio One Stage in this years Reading. So far the EP's have been just fairly good never really setting the world alight but being fun non the less their sound is very minimalistic dancey electronic indie rock, essentially though synths n such dominate the sound its never that BIG it's like the LCD approach very much understated, they get the elctronic dancey movement and rhythem but wrap it round spikey guitars, a trend chase they do not appear to be.

The track that has gotten them the most attention is the funky bass lined 'Ice Cream' which offers a delectable hook and an infectiously catchy n dancey beat with hooks all over the shop the other coverage grabbing song 'Bomb' is here also & like 'Ice Cream' is typically one of the highlights of the batch, however one of my faviroutes of the album is the hooky and contaigously brilliant 'Hiding In The Staircase' which offers a strong hook threw out of 'It's the souuuuuund' this may sound pretty dull but it borrows it's self in ur head like you wouldn't believe! The track it's self is pretty tropical in a sense but never strays too far from the Pony Club dancey formula. The opening track 'Get Lucky' is very similar to 'Ice Cream' in the use of the guitar riff and it boists very much the same sound but carrys it off well. The throbbing bass line and angular guitar on Jerk Me provides yet another highly dancable tune and as usual provides the typical hook as well, this is followed by 'The Get Go' the ast truley what I consider great song on the album. After 'The Get Go' the album does start to run a bit thin, though none of the cuts are actually bad they arent near to the high standards of the fist 6 tracks.

At the end of the day this is an extremely convincing debut offering plenty of moments of dancable pleasure & strong hooks. Consider them a more approachable and funkier version of LCD Soundsystem, the may not be as much whit or substance in their songs but for what they are the are some bloody nice tunes on this album that I would be more then happy to dance to and after all.... is this not the purpose of this record?

Standouts: Hiding In The Staircase, Ice Cream, Bomb, Jerk Me

7.2/10

Artist: Queens Of The Stone Age

Album: Eva Vulgaris

Genre: Hard Rock/ Alt Rock/ Stoner Rock

If there ever was a band full deservant of their mainstream success then Queens Of The Stone Age would be prime examples, offering a very distinctive sound with hooks and great soundscope and imagination, this band provides exceptional hard rock when it wants to. After 2004's good but ultimatly flawed Lullabyze you often wonderd which direction this band will go, im pleased to say the gimmickry of past records 'Lullabyze' & things such as the radicolous skits on 'Songs For The Deaf' are long gone, what u get here is a very tightly knit 12 track album offering yet more strange guitar riffs, feedback effects and typically the great QOTSA that I have grown to love in the past.

'Battery Acid' is a track that showcases such bizzare brilliants within QOTSA by offerin an almost 8bit sound to the guitar where as 'I'm Designer' is a lil more retrained offering a simple shuffeling guitar, most of this album features crunching guitars somewhere along the line '3's & 7's' is a great musical experiance though lacking any real momentum. Some of the tracks even sound inspired by noise rock god's Sonic Youth with daydreamesc guitar plangs twangs wurbles n feedback whoaring threw out & the u even have a couple soft doosies 'Make It Wit Chu' is a brilliant song at a much lower tempo and much more upbeat sound.

This album is very good, the is no denying it, there is a problem.... alot of the songs suffer from lack of any real destinction they do have the tendency to sort of merge into one stodgey stail and dull puddle. However having said that the are plenty of moments to balance this out and as a whole the album isn't that much of a choir to listen to, where I found lullabyze to be. Much less poppy with their sound and much more at home to the rated r era, cept more mature. This is a welcome contribution to an already impressive back catalouge.

Artist: Maps

Album: We Can Create

Genre: Electronic/Alternative

Similar To: Sigur Ros, My Bloody Valentine, The Kissaway Trail

Couple artists spring into mind with the way this album is set out and produced, most deffinatly the likes of Sigur Ros spring into mind (a band member helped with the production) when hearing the way some of these tracks are sorted. This artist is going back to the age of rock which establised artists such as 'My Bloody Valentine' established back in the 80's but adding an electronic edge to it.... I say electronic edge it is mainly electronic threw n threw.... does this sound pay off well? In a short awnser "YES" this album from start to finnish is more or less a flawless of collection intelligant dance & soothing music. Quite fantastic in a sense that a collection of songs so intelligant and deep could actually be as digestable and approachable as they actually are. The is a collection of songs here that will lodge themselves into your head in no time, at the same time the are other (especially at the end of the album) more unothordox songs which promise and deliver the aspect of growing on you. This is shown where tracks such as 'You Don't Know Her Name' are hooky monsters with triumphnt production where as songs such as 'Back + Fourth' are a little more subtle and take a while for u to understand and appriciate but when u finnaly do it easily becomes a highlight of the album. What you have here is one of 07's essential albums, what u have here is an album very sure of what it is, what you have here is a potential classic n break threw album from a fine solo artist, what u have here is the best Iclandic British collab ever

Reccomended: So Low So High, You Don't Know Her Name, Elouise, Back + Forth, Don't Fear

I think reviews require links from now on. At least for the recommended ones. But that's probably asking alot since you cant seem to put May's playlist of 15 to 20 songs in a zip and paste it on here for some reason or another or another or another. After a month..........

sorry for the delay Stillman, but I couldn't find a full copy so I had to get each track individually lol

album: southern weather

artist: the almost

a side project of the drummer of Underoath (if I remember correctly), The almost released this album last April. Kudos to the guy for playing almost all instruments and doing almost all vocals. Reminds me of Celldweller, New Radicals, or NIN. The music however doesn't. Out of those three, it's most like New Radicals, except not quite as pop.

I didn't pay much attention to the lyrics, but the music is very much upbeat and in that sense kinda happy. A lot of the songs I felt were way too typical for modern rock (as toxic would say lol). This is not quite as heavy as most of the christian rock I've come across (thanks to Stillman), but there are interesting breakdown moments between the speedy pop punk sections. A choir has one of those moments. The track Dirty and left out, being acoustic, reminded me very much of something Lifehouse would do. Very interestingly I Mostly Copy Other People was less typical than most of the other songs. There was something different about it.

I didn't like the singing style. It's something I've heard from a ton of male American singers. The drumwork was well done, but most of the time of course it's just the usual 4/4. Something like two kicks and then a snare, with some complication in between. Solo work of a drummer, I expected him to shine more than he actually did on this album.

A usual song from this is somewhat heavy, quite emotional lyrically, pretty fast paced, and clocks in at just over 3 minutes.

Which is not my thing. The guy's maybe doing the best out of something I think is overused and misses the target. This could very likely top the charts, but that doesn't make it that good. I'm officially less than impressed lol.

Best track: Amazing because it is. Mostly on an acoustic guitar, but features what I think is a trumpet, and a choir.

Rating. 4/10

and I think I'll do more reviews and more rapidly in the near future lol

Just sorting the playlist out, it's likely to be split into 2.... because someone has made a rather nasty habbit of giving me a whole catalouge of songs over 9mins long =P

I can at least reveal the artists: The National, Sparta, Linkin Park, Queens Of The Stone Age, Marilyn Manson, Modest Mouse, Blonde Redhead, Maps, Bjork, 65daysofstatic, A Sunny Day In Glasgow, Okkervil River, Matthia Aebi, Machine Head, Feist, Electrelane, Shearwater, Boris With Michio Kurihara, Yndi Halda, In Extremo

I can tell u this much, it's a very nice balance of Mainstream and Underground right here take note of it all, the majority of this is the very latest releases on the scene right now unlike the last one which was a lil more nostalgic. I can also tell u Okkervil, Blonde Redhead, A Sunny Day In Glasgow and Maps are the stand outs according to my ears

Hey Sten, they are all standouts man! But I prefer this Boris song the most out of all five that I submitted. There is just something out of this world and amazingly majestic about that song. The guitar tones and spacey atmosphere of that song is mindbending. I love the ebow and noise generated on it.

Plus that Okkervil River song will be heard out of context to the Black Sheep Boy's concept since the listener won't hear BSB or the BSB Appendix as a whole.

And you can't go wrong with Mr November. Can't "fuck over" that song.

Spectacular songs, i love the majority of them, they are just the 4 I absaloutly cant stop listening to. Mr.November has been twigging in my playlist for a while now, love it all the same but right now its all about dem 4 songs
