crazy robster Posted June 2, 2007 Posted June 2, 2007 Hey I think this is the first playlist I have heard where Toxic contributes songs as well, I wasn't able to download the previous one you guys made but it's all good. So, I must say as a humble listener and nothing more I enjoyed this playlist for the most part. There were no songs I hated though Train and Wolves were a bit too noisy for my ears. I'll just talk about the ones I liked most. Neva Ceng i Harbe, Mr November, Elouise, Red Sea,Black Sea, At Sea, Taking Back Control and of course No More Sorrow are the standouts in my opinion. They just made me feel good listening to them, maybe made a bettrer impression on me than the rest. I expected more from QOTSA and as for Mr Manson's track I tried to judge it as a song without bringing his face in mind cause even his thought makes it hard for me to sleep at night (lol) still made me a bit uneasy, yeah it wasn't terrible just you know...Jsut hearing his voice brings bad images in my head. So yeah Mr Toxic is a nice new contributor I must admit, I was just curious about what sort of tracks he would recommend but they are interesting and fresh sounds so props for that! Overall better than any of the previous playlists I've heard from you guys Quote [broken External Image]:http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g189/rbffe/rob_opens-eyes.gif My sis about Rob: "You'll be celebrating your golden infatuation with him one day.."
Stenners Posted June 2, 2007 Author Posted June 2, 2007 album: fishscale artist: ghostface killa genre: gangsta rap This album got a lot of praise last year. Got toted as hip hop album of the year, and I think it was on metacritic where it got good reviews and high scores. Something is messed up with that. I'll agree that hip hop had a slack year (at least commercially) last year, but to give this album a high score is not justified. It's just the same old mainstream gangsta rap stuff as you'll hear other places. The lyrical content can be summed up in this sentence: "I deal crack and hold up liquor stores in the projects, and btw, I'm bangin your sister (insert detailed description of sexual activity), NIGGA!" Not very deep. And frankly I'm gettin tired of rap where it's either this, or the rapper's battlin an imaginary opponent, and introducin his homies in between. The track Jellyfish was interesting. I thought the melody was gonna be good, but nope, then they just repeat the same two tones over and over again. And then Ghost does something terrible...he sings. And it isn't bad, it's horrible, and offkey, and I dunno what. I know rap beats are based on repetition in 4/4, but you still gotta do better than that. It just hurts the ears. The only good things about this album are the diversity musically, heard in rock, funk, pop, jazz (and more) influences, and then when the drums actually do a cool beat, which doesn't happen too many times. Oh and, the skits are interesting. Lyrical content is also repetition. Ghost is just recyclin what he hears everyday. He isn't doin anything new, and he has no flow. Seriously, what was he thinkin? I've heard the guy do decent things, and I mean he was on Wu-tang. Did I also mention that this album has 24 tracks??? Not too many of them are skits either. So this is too much material, of bad material. I mean...24? By track 10 or so I was already tired, thinkin "when's this gonna be over?". The only really good moments are when a guest rapper, good lyrical topic, and a nice beat, are combined. That's about 5% of the album. Ghost: Kick the habit, kick the producers, go listen to some decent underground lyricists, and come back after 5 years and then MAYBE try doing something. Rating: 1,2/10. I heard this album, was underwhelmed but hell its at least a 7 for me Tical by Method Man left me feeling the same way first listen, after a few more spins (rather relectantly) i discoverd it to be one of the best rap albums of the era Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. FireHawk Posted June 2, 2007 Posted June 2, 2007 I think its finally becoming apparent that mainstream rap (or what we hear as mainstream now) is falling down and we will eventually see it dissapear like nu-metal although I don't think it will fall as fast as nu-metal i still think it will slow go away Quote Please when you see spam just click the http://www.sucksbbs.net/data/MetaMirrorCache/4b273718b96672a5cde873c5a972756e.gif graphic and type "Spam" into the text box then click report. Some I don't. I just wanted to point out The Operator is Barbara's catchiest song, but in general I didn't get into her in my past attempt. Alot of artists are missing including: Animal Collective Panda Bear Junior Boys (So This Is Goodbye was my 2nd or 3rd fav album of 2006 right behind Grizzly Bear) Caribou aka formerly known as Manitoba (his new one leaked recently) Fiery Furnaces Bark Psychosis Spiritualized Slowdive XIU XIU Tortoise The Books Notwist Hood 13 & God Squarepusher Aphex Twin M83 Boards of Canada Berg Sans Nipple Guillemots Working For A Nuclear Free City Low Menomena The Album Leaf Of Montreal Battles Deerhunter aMute 1 Mile North Manual Mum Mogwai (yes indeed Mogwai, if we are talking electronic-y) Agggggg.........there are too many to list. I'll stop. Dancey? Talking Heads? Btw......thanx. I think you have a fun mix here for people that don't want to be slammed too hard on the eclectic or crazy side of things. Quote
Stenners Posted June 4, 2007 Author Posted June 4, 2007 ^^ I have most of those artists and were all considerd.... especially Battles, Of Montreal, Aphex Twin & Animal Collective I could always do a part 2, I guess Also as for the Talking Heads issue, I was trying to keep the age scope of the music within 3 - 4 years but yah the most part it's meant to be a fun introduction playlist designed to ease people into a genre. Stenners Posted June 6, 2007 Author Posted June 6, 2007 Artist: Calvin Harris Album: I Created Disco Genre: Dance/Disco/Pop The general hype ball of Calvin has been very big & within good reasson his superb debut single 'Acceptable In The 80's' looks set to be one of this years best pop songs but here is where it all goes suddenly not so good. I can saftely divulge a lil bit of information on this album that may or may not shock you, it's rather dull. Yes the quirkyness in 80's and Girls is totally void in the majority of the record.... the songs are often similar in structure use the same keys and stick to the same key formula. 'Certified' is a pretty neat instrumental showing his potential as a producer 'Love Souvenir' on the other hand is pretty cringe worthy, it's just an album devoid of any emotion commitment and variety it's all the same texture threw n threw, especially bland and just nothing outstanding or even comes close to the dancey sing song 'Acceptable in the 80's'. Stick this in for one or two spins but nothing more this is truley a if not somewhat expected dissapointing let down, the re-invention/revival of disco here? Nah 4.5/10 Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. Friðbjörn Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 I see I haven't told you how small my hard drive is =) I have NO room for music, or almost none and I don't think I'll be pulling out my absolute faves, I don't wanna be hassled about that. I'm gonna bring tracks from the period I think people should hear. but of course what I choose is gonna be by my taste... Friðbjörn Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 alright I've pretty much got the playlist except like one song. if all's good I'll have it by tomorrow. review: album: War and pain artist: Voivod year: 1984 genre: metal, thrash metal, punk rock Alright this band is still going today. They've gone through changes and phases, but still going. That's gotta mean they're doing something right. But on this debut album of theirs I'm just not feeling it. This album's really raw, with a lot of guitar feedback and that kind of noises, in between the quite fast riffs. I actually felt this album sounded a lot like punk rock, with metal in between. Now at this time, thrash metal's being developed, mixing heavy metal with the pace of punk rock, but when Voivod plays fast on this album it just sounds more like punk to me, than thrash metal. But again, thrash metal is in the early stages. Not many would say Voivod was instrumental in developing the sound of thrash metal, but they seem to have been there from the early beginning. I'd say this album is a nice one to blast on the road. When it's not punk, it's pretty damn heavy, and the singer sings very raw, kinda like James Hetfield did until on songs like Nothing Else Matters. Like I said I just wasn't feeling the vibe of this album. It's nice at parts of it, but it's one of those pieces that just lack some spark. It's a decent album, but without the spark, and the fact it's too much punk at the expense of the metal, I'm going to give this album a 5,5/10. Toxic1 Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 I so would have gone with Kissing The Lipless or Saint Simon for the Shins. Those are the classics from that album. and Rain on Tin by Sonic Youth Having hard times with my list. So many songs and artists I have to leave out. I have to also discriminate because every song can't be long, etc. Quote
