Stenners Posted September 8, 2007 Author Posted September 8, 2007 It was, the girl rode the other member during a song. And other onstage antics, they had a good sound live as well.... not amazing but good but the entertainment value made up for that. Its better then when you see a band that are like totally wicked but have no charisma. *flash backs of Interpol* wow that was boring Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. Indie Pop/Pop Rock When this band announced they would be expanding their sound to a much more impactive and larger sound one thought began ringing around my head..... 'Please don't please don't please don't' you see the main problem is 90% of my liking for this band is entirley based on charm alone, creating a song where you just go 'BANDAGES BANDAGES BANDAGES' & being able to make it one of the greatest indie disco floor fillers of recent times is quite an achievment & had a band such as 'The Killers' done it with their sneery attitude it would of sucked. So here we go, Hot Hot Heat return on the back of pretty good yet underwhelming single 'Let Me In' which is and okay hooky track which is far superior to alot of the radio output currently, so okay this was a decent enough start of an opinion. What this album deffinatly did not need was a dreery & totally unforgettable opener.... the title track 'Happiness LTD.' does fulfill this role to an incredible degree this is easily the most dull & boring track they have ever put out, its underwhelming, it's dull, it's got no hook and most of all it just reeks of Hot Hot Heat trying to be epic.... CHARM CHARM CHARM! It's all about the charm with you guys, if I wan't epic music I will tend to go to the artists with little charm and a face that looks like it's taken far too many beatings in their life... now thats real pain, your meant to get me singing and dancing! http://www.socan.ca/jsp/en/images/HotHotHeat.jpg Thankfully the album does quickly retreat to pop territory with the single and then a couple more potential singles '5 Times Out Of Ten' is a typical catchy song with piano melody... their better songs do often involve piano & this one stands out to you it is a good pop song for it is hooky and dancey and not sickening. 'Harmonicas & Tamborines' which I feel is the highlight of the album follows soon after but once again it lacks the charm, it just feels too over produced and too big for the band other mention to songs go to 'Outta Heart' which is an okay ballad of sorts but the rest of the albums sort of blurs by and ends on another terribly bland song! Any life that made me like Hot Hot Heat seems to be completely removed, the album is far too over produced and the charm is almost completely gone, such a shame... still a couple good pop songs though. Stenners Posted September 23, 2007 Author Posted September 23, 2007 http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/31EL4QmNMVL._AA240_.jpg Foo Fighters Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace Rock/Grunge Foo Fighters are a typical case of a band that is failing to really capture past glories, their first 2 albums were very good but every album after that had a couple good songs surrounded by filler. So it's pretty fair to say that this album really wasn't being hyped by fans of Rock Music, pretty much looking at it with cautious eyes and expecting another dent in whatever credibility Foo Fighters have left. It's not so much Foo Fighters are a bad band, but they have been playing with the same sound for around 13years now & it's just boring... and outdated. The first 4 tracks on this album shows Foo Fighters probably at their most consistent for years, the are alot of decent songs at the opening of the album they aren't great but they come closer to their glory years then any of their albums in the last 10 years..... but after that they do fall in pretty much the same trap that has recently plauged this band and that is they fall into a world of filler, the are a couple songs amongst this filler pitfall that provide some glimmer of hope but once again Foo Fighters pull out an album with some promise but the band are still trapped in the past. Yet another import from a vibrant music scene in Brighton, UK (where every act seems to come from in the UK as well as Manchester, Sheffield & Wales nowa days) I was lucky enough to experiance her in a nice tiny little venue around a year and a half ago. The album it's self is cohierent enough and does offer some very accomplished songs, the opening tracks in particular are very enjoyable but the is one thing I can't get over.... & thats her sound is just a slightly weaker version of her respective influences. I look at PJ Harvey, Kate Bush & Bjork and just think so much highly of them & thats the albums main draw back, where as 'Horse & I', 'Whats A Girl To Do' & 'Trophy' still do get very heavy listens from me I rarley go back to the entire album... her vocals are too similar as 'PJ Harvey', her weirdness isn't quite as weird as 'Bjork' & her melodies just arent as interesting as 'Kate Bush' and trust me all these elements do sound remarkably familiar as her respective peers, it's the lack of her own deffinative sound that really hurts the album. This album is pretty decent, the are a handful of really good songs, some good songs and some totally forgetable one & if it weren't for the fact I feel shes a poor imitation of some of my faviroute artists i'd probably be a little more impressed by it, unfourtenetly I can't get over that and spare 4 or 5 songs I rarley see myself comming back but it's a nice introduction to this area of music and fans of 'Bat For Lashes' should deffinatly check out the above influences... especially 'PJ Harvey'. To be honest with you they are musically a pretty decent band offering some fairly complicated and sweet guitar riffs and some pretty fasinating drumming. Lyrically they aren't brilliant but they are a dam sight better then most other bands operating this field this album is a pretty tight showcase of work which grabs on first listen and keeps enough depth to keep listeners comming back for more. The album doesn't sound over produced, it still sounds pretty gritty and raw. Thats not to say this is the perfect Post-Hardcore album, the are still some flaws... the are moments that make you feel embarrased to be listening to it, this is never a good thing when an album makes you question your music taste, but hey this album has a song named 'Jaws 3 People 0' and that made me smile. Does it do it? Well yes it does do it pretty well, the intricute melodies from Piano tinkerling down to swoons of orchestral strings and spacey guitar pedals, this album has plenty going for it. The is added depth with the inclusion of hidden melodies over some minor walls of noise, now these walls of noise are alot less intense then say 'Sunny Day In Glasgow' but the is enough their to add depth and replay value to the album. I personally believe this album plays off better then their strong debut album 'Coal' it just seems more confident and more hoaned in on the sound they were looking for in their debut, moments of the album very much sound like the great 'Nick Cave' as the album enters more coluntry-esc moments, this is not to say the album plays off as a traditonal country album but with tracks such as the brilliantly atmospheric 'Oh Me, Oh My' deffinatly show a country edge to it with its tone in guitar and vocal. This album is not perfect, the are some flaw, when it goes down to it some of the songs do sound very similar but this is a problem that reduces on repeated listens and some tracks do seem to loose their aim and momentum which results in some of the tracks not really going anywhere but hey, those looking for an atmospheric album should deffinatly check this one out. The music which is fairly honky tonk is a pretty accquired taste not everyone loves music that sounds like country music as it's simply not cool and is more of a niche then anything, which is a shame as on this disc is some pretty nice melodies with some nice arrangements and breaks thrown into the mix. The albums lyrical focus is mainly that of dissapointment, heart break and confusion.... like pretty much every other folk album then... but the are moments which are more light hearted and shows 'John McCauleys' lighter side, this album isn't overly heavy and nor does it really provoke an emotion that stongly but what for what it is.... an accomplished dish of Lo-Fi Folk... it's a pretty strong debut and I look forward to hearing more. Stenners Posted September 28, 2007 Author Posted September 28, 2007 http://www.thisisfakediy.co.uk/upload/letsstayfriends300.jpg Les Savy Fav Lets Stay Friends Rock/Punk It's been an unbelievably long wait for fans of this Punk outfit to hear new material not since 2001's Go Forth has their been a new 'proper' album. Renowned for having some of the best live performances around this band adapt a quirky style to a genere which has really fucked up recently, this is not a pop-punk affair, nor is this an artifical angsty punk effort... this band adapts all that is great about punk and throws in some math rock elements as well as a little emo (proper emo) and a dash of indie just to flavour things up. What this leads to is a band that probably won't grow stale as they always have new ground to explore.... so why the damned long wait? Well the band has quite rightly said that it is quality over quantity & does this album dissapoint? Not at all, this is the triumphnt return after the good but ultimatly flawed 'Go Forth' that I was hoping for. When I pushed play on this album for the first time a couple weeks ago I was hit with the savy savy with lavishes of guitar which got the balance of noise, umpf and melody just about right, sure this isn't anything new or reveloutinory but it is damned fine rock. This album has clearly gone over to the cross over appeal, the album that could win new fans and FINNALY gain that much deserved radio airplay, the album is full of hooks and is more liniear then any of their previous efforts... they pull this off incredibly well with help from many musicians from bands such as 'The Firey Furnaces' this album pretty much would find it nearly impossible to fail. The inclusion of additonal instruments such as pianos is also a welcome addition to the bands sound, unfourtenetly some tracks do full a bit short with a pretty unspectacular middle which dissapoints after the trememndous way the album kicks off but the back end of the album see's it pick up again. Minor falts aside this is a damn fine rock album which shows the band at their most melodic and approachable to date... is it their best album? No it's not but is it the best place to start? Most deffinatly. 8.75/10 The Equestrian http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_l8zY1wisK4&mode=related&search= Patty Lee http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3_VGcXmTDFo Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. Potentially one of the new hot bands, I saw them at the Carling stage at this years Reading Festival... I thought they were okay but I was incredibly hungover and tired when they came on.... at 11.30am. Anyways to the song, this is a nice smart 2minute dose of Post Punk Pop which is enjoyable hooky and very likeable.... the only problem is it's sense of direction is a bit lost, it doesn't quite build up to the climax like you feel it should, this holds back an otherwise fine tune. -> 7/10 -> http://drownedinsound.com/images/27433.jpeg Pinkback From Nothing To Nowhere Indie Pop ---> A Band I feel could easily catch a wider mainstream audience, this band puts out indie pop which is hooky and jangley. Reminds me of a cross between Spoon, Shins & Modest Mouse this band does have the right formular to catch on, this isn't the strongest cut off of the album for sure but it's an okay lead single... not brilliant though. ->6.5/10 ->http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=WvE7T2pZvjY http://drownedinsound.com/images/27338.jpeg Smashing Pumpkins Thats The Way (My Love Is) Rock --> Having the honour as the only other song I like off of the new album, this is the albums highlight, what I didn't like at first has come to me as a hooky delight which has Corgans best vocal performance, it does sound like their more melodic past and doesn't hold a torch to songs such as 'Tonight Tonight' or 'Today' but it's pretty decent. Ween as a band always took on a homourous approach on the space psycadelc rock genre and have at time done a fine job of it, it's just once again they put out an album that no one will really care about... again. 4.5/10 http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/517o1ffTTbL._AA240_.jpg Baby Shambles Shotters Nation Brit Rock/Indie I have never been much a fan of the Libertines deformed twin siblings, they both pretty much showed a weaker version of their former selves and lacked any real quality songwriting or any interesting or diverse ideas. This trend does continue on Shotters Nation, which is an improvment over the debut but it still lacks any originality or spark... although 'Carry Up On The Morning' is a pretty damned fine example of British rock and the sound does come closer to the infamous Libertines on then ever before, this album proves them to be far greater then 'Dirty Pretty Things' who are just terrible. 5.5/10 [insert Album artwork here] MGMT Orcular Spectacular Electronic/Shoegaze A nice example of a band that totally don't take themselves seriously, the most ironic electronic band your likely to hear plays up to the stereotypes within the electronic genre but more impressivley the shoegaze genre. They embrace the fact they do this and as a result more or less slap you in the face with any critisim you could throw at it... making it hard to hate and judge. This album stays true to the pscyadelic blueprint laid down by it's predoccesor and it does a pretty damn fine job of it, the sweet intricute melodies interwine with each other to provide easy listening & well written psychadelic music. Back in the day this name may of caused a stir and some controversy but nowa days it just sounds pathetic, having said that their whole gimmick is pretty unique. On the first recording they never rehersed anything and the album was created on the fly... this provided moments of genuine excitment and swift moments of genius... but where as improvisation is a brilliant specticle live... on disc it just seemed to grate on & on & on. I don't know too much about this album but it sounds alot more rehersed then the debut, the is more melody to it & more deffined hooks but the are still moments which are clearly just improvised, I may be wrong, they might be just getting damned good at this improv stuff. http://www.offtopic.forum/data/MetaMirrorCache/b8b9f10c70f9448811751d2b5a889256.gif This album does improve on the debut in almost every single way & for that i'm grateful, to me this was one of the most dissapointing bands I ever heard... they had a great rhythem section and technichal ability as well as some originallity but they threw it away with their self-indulgant ethics. This album, whilst I don't think quite matches what they perhaps SHOULD be able to produce come a damn site closer then the debut. Rating: 7.75/10 http://www.offtopic.forum/data/MetaMirrorCache/57a6e6f7a5cb41072f42c132639d924c.gif Steel Train Trampoline Rock/Indie Rock/Pop In the same class of Rock as perhaps Kings Of Leon in the 70's revival of Southern rock this band brings to the table more straight forward and classical ethics from rocks past rather the somewhat more complicated Indie ethics of today. This album provides simplicity in the terms of hooks a plenty, the glocesnspile tingle and piano laced melodies & does it to pretty good effect. Steel Train is another band that constantly dissapointed me but this album shows them taking several steps in the right direction with some nice melodies & truley memorable pop songs, moments of this album reminds me of other indie hits but the likes of 'Shin', 'Modest Mouse' & 'Spinto Band' just with the KOL edge to it & as a result this could be the breakthrew album the band have been looking for or this years sleeper as it is a genuinly good pop record. A good pop record that you can get on oink & if you actually took the bother to read this review you have a chance to win one of 2 invites by pm'ing me about it. Sure the are some flaws and it's not overly original but the melodies & hooks + the ability to offer instant approachability and growth makes this album one worth checking out. Rating: 8/10 I feel weird (live) http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vl4XdfThKzY Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. Stenners Posted October 4, 2007 Author Posted October 4, 2007 http://g-ec2.images-amazon.com/images/I/51h%2BMqgpXGL._AA240_.jpg Various Artsits Radio 1 Established 1967 Pop/Indie Rock Radio 1, BBC's flagship radio station, turned 40! FUCK YEA! Errrrm yea? FUCK! This thing is actually 40? Now I don't know what they played back in the day but other then late on a Friday night this station is pretty much a waste of space, playing every stereotypicaly playable band the is. How do they feel the need to celebrate this, well according to the CD cover it's '40 of todays greatest artists cover 40 years of hits' here is where I started to get excited 'KYLIE (OMG!), LILLY ALLEN! (FUCKIN ELLLL), Kaiser Cheifs (OMG NO WAI?!) Razorlight (Actually I can't give them a sarcastic praise), AMY WINEHOUSE (she isn't too bad actually), HARD-FI (SHREEEEEEEEEEEEK), Robbie Williams (w00p w00p), Foo Fighters (ahumana humana), KT Tunstall (). Yes I imagine thats what every person that feels they are in the trend and every pre-bubesent teen thinks when they read that front cover, cause they are like totally all over the chart & thats what makes em good right? That front cover quoute made me vomit a lil in my mouth, with the exception of 1 or 2 artists who have a couple decent songs this is an abomonation waiting to happen. http://www.luckyoliver.com/photos/derived/c_M6_6Qzyr25QBadbivJjM/cEEOfMQzSr25XJadbivJjM.jpg LIKE OH MY FUCKIN GAWD, What did he just say? So yes, what you have is 40 of the biggest artists currently infesting the UK charts doing covers over 40 classics.... well some of them really aren't but you get my drift. 'The Enemy' further my theory that they are one of the worst Pub-Rock enduced bands your ever going to hear by totally destroying 'Father & Son' one of the more credible artists 'Streets' totally cock up here with 'Maximo Park' lending an interesting approach to JT's 'Like I Love You'.... this ends up being one of the highlights though not for the right reassons. One of the suprises was in 'The Fratellies' doing a decent cover of 'All Along The Watchtower' & Kaiser Chiefs effort isn't too bad. But the rest are inhumain and criminal! The Twang pull out their carreer highlight on this album but it's a... cover... and it's a terrible one.. well done lads! Okay to get to the point, if your like totally gay over the below artists & have no idea of the songs they are covering then you will love it!.... Unfourtenetly... so protect some feelings: 9/10 OH MY GAWD IT'S LIKE THE BEST BANDS EVAH ALL ON ONE DISC, BORRELL IS SOOO SOOO FIT AND SUGA-BABES ARE LIKE SO UNBELIVABLY STYLISH AND LIKE THAT MAKES EM TOTALLY THE BEST THINGS EVAH.....
