Stenners Posted November 21, 2007 Author Posted November 21, 2007 http://www.zigzaglive.com/live/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/ChkChkChk.jpg !!! <> Yadnus Having the honour of being one of the best live bands on the circuit right now (I saw them at Reading 07, never seen so much energy and fun on stage this side of 'of Montreal') they come back from this, the latest single from this years release 'Myth Takes'. It's a galmarous yet dirty electronic fist pumper which goes from groovey sways to high pitched yelping all within its funky groove and stride if the bass line doesn't want to make you move then you are dead. 8/10 http://www.cavacool.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/the-whip.jpg The Whip <> Sister Siam http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUm6TCbEK0g Having had such a strong electronic rock herritage, you have to wonder why this song is such a dissapointment. A homage to 'Funky Town' it crosses boarders from being neither minimalistic or over blown pop and sort of likes to settle it's self somewhere in the middle, leaving it in an area which just screams mediocrity & 1/4 of the way into the song & your already bored, which begs to question if this is one of the standout moments on their latest effort where the hell do 'The Whip' go from here? 4/10 http://www.gigwise.com/artists/00019344_dizzee.jpg Dizzie Rascal <> Flex Dizzie Rascals latest album was.... to say the least... a dissapointment, the recent surge into production has hurt his song writing. Whilst the beats sound cleaner and more punchy (sort of missing the point of grime here) then they ever have the whitt and gritt and grime of his older stuff is missing. What you have here is a perfectly ordinary drunkern dance floor fodder which does serve it's purpose but when it lacks all the stuff that made Dizzie the accomplished grime artist he is today... then you have a dissapointingly tame single. 6/10 Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. Friðbjörn Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 favouring underground or indie does not affect matt's credibility as a reviewer, quite the opposite. it's the sad truth that in the underground, less known scenes the really good music flourishes. sure there are a few bands in the mainstream that are quite good, but they are all too few. and this is just what you get when the "industry" is about the money and not the music. either they go for something more commercially sellable and easy listening or accessible, or they destruct the band by forcing them to do this and that. only two bands in the mainstream with real artistic freedom in any sense, that I can think of right now, are tool and radiohead. and radiohead is now without a label. Stenners Posted November 21, 2007 Author Posted November 21, 2007 Thank ya folks http://www.sonybmgmusic.co.uk/graphics/artists/fullsize/209.jpg The Hoosiers <> Goodbye Mr.A http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=a2ErypIapyw The Hoosiers must earn a reward of some sort for what they managed to acheived, not only have they crafted 2 singles that have sounded ALMOST identical they have also got similar titles.... 'Starting To Worry About Ray' now 'Goodbye Mr A' i'm looking forward to hearing 'Eating My Special K' or 'Horses Lay In My Hay All Day Ray'... I mean seriously that is a total lack of imagination from the get go. To the song, the production is flat and innofensive, contains as bland of a piano melody as you can get and the guitar just sort of dwindles on uninspiringly whilst the drumming is so bog standard that your likely to hear a demo of it on a casio keyboard. 0.5/10 http://www.ugo.com/channels/music/features/bandsondemand/images/Electronica/artist/pendulum.jpg Pendulum <> Granite http://www.myspace.com/officialpendulum It's been a couple of years since these major hitters in almost every single music scene possible have laid out a new song, yet alone album. Drum N Bass with rock dynamics and electronic undertones has provided a rare band in that it appeals to EVERYONE! No matter what style of club you go to in the UK you are likely to hear a cut, this one is possibly their best song yet. It's a TUNE it thumps and bumps like no other is high paced, high octaned, addrenelin filled club banger. People that liked anything off of their last album 'Hold Your Colour' but felt it to be a bit too repetetive will be very happy with this offering as it plays more like a traditonal song then a beat. THIS IS A CHOON! 10/10 http://g8.undercoverhd.com/imgsresized/article/070520RihannaRocThaBlock281006_2.jpg Rihanna <> Don't Stop The Music http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xsRWpK4pf90 Let's face it 'Umbrella' was massive & a really good tune (once I got over the annoyance of ella-ella-ella) and 'Shut Up And Drive' wasn't a bad pop ditty either and the trend pretty much continues here. Showing herself to be the female equivelent of Justin Timberlake.... I.E. someone that can make decent pop tunes within the mainstream this song reminds me of a Michael Jackson cut from his abover average but not brilliant days, its dancey and hooky and will get teenage girls and boys dancing in the clubs & from a tune such as this.. it's all you could really hope and ask for, isn't it. 7/10 Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. This song follows a string of very rich & strong singles based on the angular guitar format by offering memorable melodies and hooks as well as whitty and smart lyrics, this song is a shade or two different, the first thing you will notice is that it's accoustic and seemingly more lo-fi then their other songs... the pace is alot slower also but once again the band crank out a song with a simple yet delightful melody & is a song that shows another side to the band who have put out one of the most underrated albums of 07. 7.5/10 http://www.thisisfakediy.co.uk/upload/gorillaz300.jpg Gorrilaz <> Rock It http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=5hBWxyckRUA&feature=related This, comming off of their 4 release (2nd B-side release) 'Rock It' has been doing the rounds on music blogs for quite sometime now & here it is as a single. This song is a synth & bass driven song which is pretty dark and creepy with vocacoded vocals and with 2D just singing 'Bla bla bla bla bla' threw out the majority of the song. Considering their weird nature this song makes perfect sense but it lacks the pop undertone that the majority of their more casual fans have picked up on & whilst this does boost yet more variety as an artist surley the is a better suited single then this on 'D-Sides'? 7/10 Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. I haven't really tried to divulge into it... Burial is an unknown producer (as in no one knows his true identity) who has been around the scene for a couple years now. With this release I can see what the hyping is all about & I must say I for one am glad, this stuff is so mellow and hypnotic you can just... listen & not even notice the state of mind it's putting you in. Listening to this album releases many chill vibes threw out the body as well as haunying ones. This stuff is nicely layerd and produced with some outstandingly used female sample vocals with tracks such as 'Shell Of Light' actually enducing emotion in which is often thought to be a rather cold and souless area of music. This is something of a gem which will probably skip the majority of peoples radars as it is pretty different and doesn't really sound like anything else I own, the experiance was totally worth it & I can see this on some clued up album of the year lists this year. 9.25/10 I dont ever see enough of dubstep lol bout damn time! Most bands tend to wait years to do this but as the Gorrilaz are different I guess that passes off as okay. So what to expect off of this collection then? What you get is an album 2 discs in portion, one disc offering B-Sides and Demos with the other offering remixes of past hits from such heavy hitters such as DFA, Hot Chip & Soulwax. This album really does offer the goods in terms of artistic credential with said appearances from said artists so how the hell could it possibly go wrong? So how can it go wrong, well it doesn't per say, at least on the remix CD this is true with 4 or 5 really good remixes thrown in with the Soulwax and DFA remixes of said song actually improving on the original tenfold & the first disc does have a couple gems in it such as the Harmonica rock driven 'Hong Kong' down to the Shuffle of the funky 'Swagga'. The other songs though, really do sound like lesser cuts which just sound rather bland & when 'People' is one of the highlights and is just essentially another alternative version of Dare with different lyrics then it sort of shows this collection lacks any new tricks. Most of the tracks just sound like Jam sessions in the studio which were essentially muck arounds & were never meant to be actual songs, they go no where & just drone on as some sort of soundcheck rather then a song. Putting asides the majority of the B-Sides on the first disc what you get here is an album of which it's entire strengths seemingly rely on 'Dare' and its guest apperances, the best 2 songs are Dare remixes and People is a highlight. then you have what looks like an EPs worth at best collection of decent cuts with the rest being totally disposable, so the album just drags and goes on for wayyyyy to long, close to 2hours in fact. So this is an overlong collection which will only please the die hards, save the cash and buy the remixes seperatley as most of the collection is just not worth it. 4.5/10 Reccomended: People, Hong Kong, Don't Get Lost In Heaven (Demo), Dare (DFA Remix), Dare (Soulwax remix) Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. This band are obviously inspired by the likes of 'The Blood Brothers' and 'The Locust' by providing the tight feel of 'The Locust' with the more melodic hardcore of 'The Blood Brothers'. This shit is angry, it sounds like an angry bastard child trying to set it's self free from numerous boundries and guidelines by putting in as much noise and anger as physically possible with bombasts of drums, insanse screaming & thrashing guitar.... this my friend is moshing fodder at it's finest. The intensity of the album get's stronger and stronger, the start of the album is pretty tame but each step seems like a more agressive and thrashy affiar which your ready to take on head first. 'Gay For Johnny Depp' is one of these rare cases where you should absoloutly believe the hype & it's pretty clear that the band isn't just recognised for the name but the sheer intensity of the music, people mourning over the recently departed Blood Brothers.... this is your next stop of call. 8/10 You Have A Theory, I Have A Gun http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lk6US8-aNQg&feature=related Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. It's a throw back to rock 'n' roll with a cool mo-town esc edge with piano jingles and a funky honky tonk groove to it. As old as the concept may be.... This song seems to capitalise on both key elements of their size with the emotional synth drone feel of 'Boy From School' and the dancey edge remenisent of songs such as 'Over & Over'. I personally find this song a very natural progression for the band & as such has come out as one of their best releases to date. 9/10 http://www.plong.com/MusicCatalog/B/Bjork%20-%20Telegram/Bjork%20-%20Telegram.jpg Bjork <> Declare Independance Alternative/Experimental http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=LGC0VVobi6E Bjork is a funny one, I honest to God am suprised she is as big of an artist as she is, the is no doubt she deserves to have the status she has in modern music and the is no doubt about that. Her unothordox singing scale and musical arangements have earned her a place in music history. So to this song, it's slow and sedated start erupts with joyous out bursts of electronic noise and footstomping which only gets more and more infectious on each listen. 9/10 http://www.absolutepunk.net/gallery/files/5/8/1/3/8/one.jpg Timberland Ft One Republic <> Apologize Rock/Pop Rock/MOR http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=KHfyDxy8i5o&feature=related Yes, I know this song has been around for a good long time now but it's just the amount of coverage the song has gotten which has swithced me on to review this. So what have we got here? Apparently this song is the emotional peak of sir Timberland... what better way to pass off this emotion, by letting other people express it for you. Seriously this is the middle of the road play it safe rubbish that Timberland needed to connect with people other then those wearing bandanas with a shooter in one hand and a bitch in the other. They have done well for themselves, just the sheer sight of the logo above probably made hundereds of emotionally challenged teens explode with excitment, this song is daft. The is no substinence to it, not emotion, no raw energy or passion & sounds almost as if they are now just writing songs to shut their emotionaly challenged fans up and to get another $100,000 in the bank. The song is set out like this... it's just a chorus with one of wankiest guitar solos ever to exist with a bass player who looks like he just farted with joy after said solo was performed. Sure even with Oink I baught alot of albums but now I can barley afford to pay people round the corner of my house to dance for my amusement. Reason The Forth 4 http://www.appletreeblog.com/wp-content/2007/06/drunk-crime-scene.jpg I'm a stark raving alcoholic and christmas booze is the bes kind of booze. With friends around which I haven't seen for several months I want to make like santa and have hat cock. Reason The Fith 5 http://www.gabeef.org/BeefBoard/images/consumer/Quick-and-Easy-with-Beef.jpg Singles are much easier to obtain and quicker to get a valid opinion on. Compared to albums they are very quick and easy to review thus giving me time to have cockhat. Also they can easily be obtained threw blogs and youtube! Thus giving me enough money to get tramps to dance for me. Normal service will be resumed soon.... Stenners Posted December 11, 2007 Author Posted December 11, 2007 The above post makes no sense because it was edited by communists! It was a santa with no genitals showing, covered by santa hat, PG13 at most probably but ya know! Now it ruined my theme I woulda thought the admin would at least be able to warn me of the correct thing, apparently I'm doing pictured advertising how about inappropriate content? Though it showed nothing wrong. Stenners Posted December 16, 2007 Author Posted December 16, 2007 http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51DdLEwvXeL._AA240_.jpg Led Zepplelin Mothership Rock/Compalation/Classic Rock With the reformation of the band the was never a question that this album would show it's face. It is essential really to have a compliation for a band with such a rich history and excessive back catalouge to their name (not like other cash ins such as The Libertines). So what you have got here is a 2CD collection of select Zep records from ones that EVERYONE will know and those which are less familiar & the is no doubt that the music on show here is of the highest quality and will never grow old... from the build up on 'Stairway To Heaven' the infections guitar riff on 'Kashmier' and the infectious 'Immigrant' song.... in one sitting this is all too much and the songs loose their impact & the isn't that much here for the die hard fans. This album as it stands is a great place for people who want to check out the band to start but for those who know the band back to front it just isn't worth it. 7/10 Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. Stenners Posted December 17, 2007 Author Posted December 17, 2007 http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61sX1FLp0BL._AA240_.jpg Hot Chip Made In The Dark Electronic After a very forgettable debut this band really upped their game on 2006's 'The Warning' which spawned off mega hits 'Boy From School' & more notably 'Over & Over' which became the deffinative club hit for all alternative clubs. So in the sense the album was both critically acclaimed and popular this upcomming album has got a great deal to live up to & to be honest with you when I first heard that this album was upcomming I was terrified that this band would get lazy and rely on past glories almost entirley but luckily for me these fears are yet to be realised. Made In The Dark shows the band incread their synth output yet more by offering more potential floor fillers then ever before, rather then the emotional output they offered in such high upundance in previous releases, this is not to say this album is devoid of such tracks, they are still present and enjoyable. The album opens up so strongly offering 3 highlights upon opening, 'Out At The Pictures' is a high paced almost carnival-esc romp which is followed by obviously soon to be single 'Shake A Fist' which is full of crunk and flair and the already well recieved single 'Ready For The Floor' which is easily one of the best songs of 2007. Even with such a strong opening line up the album continues strong, the 4th track is one of my personal faviroutes 'Bendable Poseable' is just weird and nightmareish with a great groove to it. By this stage you could already say and tell that this band are far more focused and linear then they used to be, their sound is getting so hoaned that this band may never fall foul of the one hit wonder tag the 'Over & Over' success could of labeled them with. Threw out the are songs that surpass the finest efforts on 'The Warning' such as 'Touch Too Much' and the 2 stupidly catchy songs in 'One Pure Thought' and 'Hold On' where as 'Dont Dance' is the final high paced track followed by 2 superb melodic pop moments. This album shows a band that is continuing to progressing, every step they seem to make right not seems to be the right one and they seem to just get better and better. From the early days to 'Over & Over' to 'My Piano' and now several offerings on 'Made In The Dark' this could be the finest mainstream electronic band we will see this decade as well as being one of the finest pop bands... this is approachabe, dancabe, hooky indulgance that could be appriciated by anyone and is sure to be another hit & is leaps and bounds better then 'The Warning'. 9.5/10 Ready For The Floor: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ljiQlkfva7w Shake A Fist (audio): http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=eGfJ4shG4ak ----=Youtube Videos Do Not Represent Audio Quality On The Album ESP Shake A Fist=----- Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. Stenners Posted December 22, 2007 Author Posted December 22, 2007 http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61TsH3gk4tL._AA240_.jpg British Sea Power Do You Like Rock Music? Indie/Powerpop/Alternative If you were to take Muse and make them have freaky sex with Arcade Fire this is the exact band you will get, British Sea Power.... one of those bands practically on the verge of a massive break threw all their carrers but yet to do so, release this album 'Do You Like Rock Music?' the sound adopted on this release is a much louder and more confident one in comparrison to their previous 2 releases, you can tell that their cash earned from a fair amount of success has been spent into production. The albums main sound goes from standard guitar rock with pop edges down to the anthmetic & overly epic sound of Arcade Fire with the slight undertoneing dash of Muses flambouience thrown in, sounds pretty good and interesting doesn't it? Well it is & it is done too an overwhelmigly unexpected degree of success making & totally outshines 'Neon Bible'. This is a must for fans of overblown music and especially fans of overblown bands such as Arcade Fire and Muse, this is a band showing a creative peak & I suggest you check them out, it's rare a band tackles a sound this big so well & I suggest looking in on it before the possibility of a big band gone wrong phase happens. 9/10 Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it.
