Stenners Posted March 19, 2007 Author Posted March 19, 2007 Please discuss the playlist folks if u hear it, tell us what ur faviroute and least faviroute tracks, did it go together well, etc. We are interested in a lil debate here, WE NEED MORE FIRE! Rawr I personally love.... well duh my choices but I also like Buck The World, loved The Bird And Bee track. The Roots I have had for ages but its a really nice addition and Jenny Owne Youngs has got a pretty nice voice. The other tracks are either mediocre in my ears or if u include Marcy Grey, piss poor. Stenners Posted March 19, 2007 Author Posted March 19, 2007 Artist: Avril Lavigne Track: Girlfriend Genre: Err apparently shes punk, but ya know lets just say for arguments sake like totally put pop. Right where to begin with this abomination, 1) This sounds like something Britney would of sung like 5 years ago, 2) its a throw back to the 80's with songs like 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' sprining to mind. Alls I can see now is this is yet another image change for Avril who was apparently a rebel and proper punk like 4 years ago. I never believed it and too all of those who took her as a serious 'artist' all I can say is, I was right and you was wrong. 1/10 ========================================================================== Artist: Twang Track: Wide Awake Genre: Alt.Rock/Indie Now here is a band that has been getting a lot of hype, despite being toated as the next big british artist this band won an award recently courtesy of NME without releasing anything proper. Yeah this track is pretty interesting, im not going to lie its enjoyable, its not exactly ground breaking or anything it's all pretty familiar but its a decent enough song to listen too in the background when you are say.... typing a review... o how handy. 6.7/10 ========================================================================== Artist: Pull Tiger Tail Track: Lets Lightning Genre: Indie/Alt.Rock My once lofty expectations of this band where crushed when I saw them live earlier this month, their music lackeds any diversity, charecter or anything really. This track does do them some justice, the studio version sounding pretty much more interesting then the live version which sort of blended in with everything else a little too much. This track is pretty good but does not live up to the loft expectation 'Mr 100 Percent' left me with. 6/10 ========================================================================== Artist: Fergie Track: Glamarous Genre: R 'n' B - As in Rubbish n Boring As if I could possibly have less respect for Fergie, not only does the record label shoot her to fame by shoving her into a perfectly capable underground act 'BEP' where she totally destroys anything that may of resembled music in their future tracks she then pushes onto a solo career where she releases 2 singles, London Bridge though production wise was a gem she killed the beat and to speak the next track Fergiliscious was a further step down.......... could it get worse, well as u can tell the level of self importance is growing threw out this single run down and this is so self important it makes me weep, though the Ludacris cameo is okay. 2/10 ========================================================================== Artist: Basement Jaxx Track: Make Me Sweat Genre: Electronic/Dance This is a truely good dance tune, I look forward to adding this proudly to my slowwwwwwwwwwwly growing dance playlist. The first track to really make the cut so easily since 'Yeah Yeah' by Bodyrox, this is an infectious little tune with great beat to it. Check it out! 8.75/10 Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. Jeezy Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 I do like the tracks that I choosed of course....but honestly afer listening to the list the Marcy Grey song wasn't the best choice...I alos don't really like the Hadouken song....but besides that the list is nice Quote
HaziLPTonz Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 i was wondering if any of you guys could do a Taking Back Sunday:Louder now and Cartel:Chroma album review? theyre both 2006 album releases, chroma is the first album released for cartel and louder now is the 3rd(and to me,easily the best) of taking back sunday. Jeezy Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 http://www.jennyowenyoungs.com/battenjpg.jpg Artist: Jenny Owen Youngs Album: Batten The Hatches Genre: Folk/Pop Label: Nettwerk Re-Release: April-10th-2007 Jenny Owen Youngs is a Singer/Songwriter from New Jersey. She got her record contract over Myspace, and now she's releasing her debut album again. It was originally released by herself over a small online-shop in 2005. Now let's get into the music. Jenny offers you some nice accoustic music, she plays most of the instruments used on the album herslef. But most of the time you'll hear her voice over a nice accoustic guitar. A lot of times Jenny get's compared to Avril Lavigne...but after you have listened to Jenny, you'll clearly see the difference. This album was included in the UKs Guardian list of the 20 Best Albums You've Never Heard. Outstanding tracks on the album are: Fuck Was I - One of the best anti-love songs ever Voice On Tape - The theme kinda is to have computers instead of people Lightning Rod - Has a great line with:"You have the answers, I have the car keys" Bricks - is a 5 minute track about Jenny and her family Coyote - You just have to listen to that song....it's so much fun You should really check her out she's the next big thing in case you want some more information: check out her myspace www.myspace.com/jennyowenyoungs Rating 9/10 Quote
crazy robster Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 Soooo, about the playlist. Overall it was great! It was better than the previous one because it was the result of team work, so congrats on it guys. I enjoyed all the songs, Myth Takes was my favourite one, maybe also the Deftones and Incubus tracks, but as I said I really enjoyed it all. Perhaps the only tracks that I found not so exciting were Voice on Tape and The Traffic Jam, not really my thing. I didn't hate them, I was just unimpressed to put it more accurately. But again congrats guys, keep the good work up! Friðbjörn Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 "Genre: R 'n' B - As in Rubbish n Boring" lmao add to that; slutty but yeah glad someone actually liked the Deftones song (which yeah I can see no one else can type out that name lol) my next reviews: Deftones - Saturday night wrist Tool - 10000 days (I'm thinkin you guys'd use a comma there?, anyway) http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/6379/200pxmayleneandthesonsomy6.jpg album: II artist: Maylene and the sons of disaster genre: southern rock / christian metal This album by this energetic soutern rock bands already jumps into 5th gear on the first track, Memories of the grove. The car metaphor is there for a reason, this is definately an album to put on when driving, or as soundtrack to a road movie. The cool smooth guitar work with heavy riffs and somewhat fast fretwork solos in between takes you for a ride. This isn't the best album I've heard, but if you like old school straight down rockin it out, this is your album. I don't care much for the screaming the singer does a lot of the time, and that is what ultimately makes me lose part of my respect for some songs. It's alright when screams slash sings, but when he goes all out it somehow doesn't work, for me. An interesting thing is how the tracks Dry the river and Raised by the tide are similar to something that Lostprophets would do. And in a sense this is somewhat like Lostprophets without the softer moments. At times this album sometimes sounds like Saliva would do, only this is actually good music, not the crap Saliva does. With that said this album is kind of one sided, although at rare moments in between (usually breakdowns with buildups) something else is heard. The same power chords and kinda similar solos get a bit old at times. The songs are also neither long nor deep, usually these guys make (good though) use of various effects pedals. But as I said if you're tired of the crap pop punk they constantly bombard your ears with on places like MTV this is good relief. The ballady (some of them are) choruses are probably Maylene's most radio friendly moments, but aside from that the rock and roll is in your face and in the style of "I don't give a shit what you think I'm just gonna rock on". My guess is that these guys live are more fun to see and hear than studio work. Two tracks that stand out though are the southern country influenced and chilled Tale of the runaways and The day hell broke loose at Sicard Hollow (the latter being instrumental btw and probably the closest country can get to ambient), which are the two last tracks. Other tracks worth checkin out are among others Dry the river and Death is an alchoholic. if you're a fan of old school hardcore (not quite metal) rock this is worth checkin out, if not, go back to The Roots, Sonic youth, Nelly, Slayer, Linkin Park, or whatever you were listening to. Rating: 5,4/10 for an alright effort Quote [broken External Image]:http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/2784/lpfas08mostintelligentym8.jpg

Stenners Posted March 20, 2007 Author Posted March 20, 2007 http://knifeparty.com/cutenews/data/upimages/mu5rderbydeath.jpg Artist: Murder By Death Album: In Bocca Al Lupo Genre: Alternative Rock Label: Cooking Vinyl Lets start with the bloody damned right obvious, shall we? Worst name in rock right now? Quite possibly, worst music in rock right now? Quite obviously................ not. This outfit sound so huge but not in a typical way, think if one of the Women from Arcade Fire had a baby with Modest Mouses Issacc Brock and Johnny Cash had some sort of helping hand in the upbringing.... like I dunno a godfather, think that and you'd be pretty close to what you would get. This music dabbels in weird folky area of Rock and lyrically is paranoid yet inspired and at times even uplifiting, the sound is huge the use of Chello and other various instruments works superbly. This album though will clearly be lost in the sea of mainstream mediocrity but this album is not only approachable whilst at the same time experimental its just a true joy to listen too, it flows impecibly with 'Boy Decided', 'Brother' & 'The Organ Grinder' being major contributions to a superb record. Though nothing is particually that memorable till after a few listens this album is full of ideas and shows a band that is most deffinatly growing musically, go check them out by any means possible they do make music that rivals the likes of 'Arcade Fire'. 8.75/10 Music Videos: (brother) http://youtube.com/watch?v=t9joocA-Fws (Sometimes The Line Walks You) Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. Now if u always wonderd what Korn would sound like after some sort of catastrophic power faliure then this the place for u to go! The simplicity of their music is exposed in full force here on this cd, the strongest parts arent performed by Korn! Now quite frankly what u get is an album with an amatuer sounding band playing at your local.... wonderful. As apposed to paying nothing and getting pissed in the process, paying full retail and listening to this stone cold sober and realising that if you throw bottles at ur stereo ur likely to regret it later you'd much rather experiance this for real where the only thing ur likely to break is the nose of the lead vocalist and your likely to come home with some funny stories. O yah did i also mention hearing amy lee on the same record as korn is my idea of hell. 1.5/10 Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. Stenners Posted March 21, 2007 Author Posted March 21, 2007 Right so heres the deal: Shortlisted for review Smashing Pumpkins - Machina/Machine Of God (check) Razorlinght - Razorlight Cartel - Chroma !!! - Myth Takes Reading Festival is something im like uber excited about so as a result im going to push my excitment onto your guys (where u like it or not) by reviewing the 3 headliners last releases! Of course im likely to review the new pumpkins release when due but ya know! Lets start with http://www.offtopic.forum/data/MetaMirrorCache/61e29cacd1a7370ef028b4f0337cee83.jpg Artist: Smahing Pumpkins Album: Machina/ The Machines Of God Genre: Alternative Rock Label: Virgin Records America Swish bash bonb, the supposid last record of Smashing Pumpkins (well proper one) hit the shelves in 2000 with large expectations. In an era of angst this is the sort of album u'd expect to do well and it does open well 'The Everlasting Gaze' is a proper good moshing tune and makes you want to dance too, it's done well and is extremely catchy. With such power and strength from an opening track on the album you eagerly await the rest of it, the next track 'Raindrops + Showers' shows their more experimental and electronical sound that they had started to adopt around the time of 'Adore' it works to an extent if not failing to push a lasting impact on the listener, it's overly long and you do begin to like doze off and like a real shower you really wish it would be fucking over and done with. This is pretty much what most of the album feels like, over long 'Stand Inside Your Love' is pretty tasty though never grabs my attention 'I Of The Mourning' really is as a whole pretty weak and does emphesise how annoying Billy Corgans voice really can be sometimes. Though its not all doom and gloom 'Try Try Try' is a very nice pop song which follows the equally if not better 'The Sacred And Profane' another must have track is the superbly bizzare 'Blue Skies Bring Tears' the tracks i mentioned are the ones have a lasting impact all the others mearley blur into nothing which has become an increading problem with pumpkins over the years. Check out their earlier catalouge befroe this album you will appriciate the Pumpkins at their top rather at their burnt out, unit shifting selves. 6/10 Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. It's clearly a band completely out of ideas after they exhausted what litttle mental flexibility they had on their first extraordinarlity bland but some how top selling album, which thanks to the praise of NME wiggled its way round every trendy magazines 'must own band'. Well last year this somewhat barable band comes back, now all I can say a band I wouldnt mind hearing 'Golden Touch' is a very good song BUT now whenever they go on and everyone around me dances and states 'THE best band since Oasis' I feel like im going to lump the next bi-stander. I have tried to avoid this band as much as possible but yah even I have been surcumed into writing a review about them. The fact the first track and o yah indeed first single is named 'In The Morning' (see The Coral) it shows again they cant think of anything new! It's a horrible single which is trying to be british like Blur but taken with artistic credibility like Oasis, what you get is a chuggery annoying song. The next track is even worse, the piano brings on many headaches 'Who Needs Love' makes you think 'hey the singles arent so bad after all' after sub dued to this pain for over 3 and a half minutes you get pushed into 'Hold On' which sounds just bout like everything else this bads attempts. The next song is the mediocre ballad 'America' which lets be frank isn't bad and is proabably the strongest of all their singles and the strongest track on the album, now lets sit back for a minute and explain whats wrong with this 'masterpiece' as the trend mags call it. 1) This is a song about America.... 2) They are from London... 3) Im pretty sure they still live in the UK... 4) It's clearly a song to appaeal to a politcal bunch of american teenagers. Right next song is the other 'ok' single from the bunch 'Before I Fall To Pieces' which people think and hope in many cases means the band is about to break up, thats why i like the song as much as i do (which isnt much) it's hope! I aint doing a track by track run down for the last lot of trash they make the first half of the album sound like it t'was penned by beethoven himself. Essentially u have a generic 'alternative'............. yah right......... rock album from according to all the trendy teen mags, chavs and townies 'the finest band the UK has' writing songs about America and im pretty sure their mother and wouldnt suprise me if it was also dedicated to a lamp the vocaist (borrell) once smashed his fellow band members heads in with. O yah this is an album from the most hated man in rock & from a band that wont spit up till its 'financially wise'....... are we listening to a bunch of rockers or a bunch of accountants? 2/10 Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. They have played as opener for bands like Yellowcard and +44. With their debut CD "Heart To Believe" they delivered a good piece of work including songs like "Back To 82", "Through The Window" and "Hate Inc." The album shows that German bands can do some nice punk music without sounding corny. Sometimes they mix in some slow ballads which creates a certain pop feeling and reminds you of Blink 182, but that just adds another flavor to their great sound. They offer a great variety of music. Their new album will be released soon this year...and I'll probably give you a review of that one, too. Rating 7/10 Quote

Right now that I have established that what you do get is a fairly decent Pop album. I wouldn't quite stretch on to say yea this is pop punk, pop punk is generally horrible but this isn't too my suprise that bad, yea its aimed at teenagers and is totally not my thing. I wouldnt give it many listens is all but I can see the appeal and at times i'm even sub dued to the odd head nodding. 'Say Anything(Else)' is a solid pop rock endevour as is the following track 'Honestly' the is a gripe to pick though with this album, it rarley ventures from its pre deffined formula, which often the case, tis the reasson pop rock bands are a flash in the pan. Lyricall problems? Yah the are I mean especially the case with 'Save Us', you know when you just split up with a girl and your father, mother or best friend spurs on clique after clique.... it feels like that only a lot more annoying! 'Minstrel Prayer' is a pretty horrible track too and again I just have to poke out one lyric "Oh carry on, you minstrels of the world" I mean serioulsy if you want to write bout Minsterals something is horribly wrong! At the end of the day this is an okay pop album and isn't overly cringe worthy or embarrasing, its got it's moments. Especially the first 2 tracks though its not what I would call a keeper, but it will go down well at any teenage disco! I'm impressed to a degree but at the same time completely ashamed and want to shut it off. PS. The Album cover needs work 6/10 Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it.
