dshogan1 Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 I am an ohio resident, and i work at Cedar Point, which is an Amusement park. As some people might know, minimum wage recently increased from 5.15/hr to 6.85/hr. What you might not know is that some people were exempted from this increase, Amusement Park workers, Home Health Care works, and small agricultural workers. I think this is bullshit, nobody should be exempted from minimum wage increases, you may not think working in an amusement park is all too stressful, but if you have never done it you dont know about the long hours, my average through june and july was 56 hrs...not that bad, but my average through august was usually over 70 hours. Not to mention all of the bullshit you deal with. But even if you think that amusement park work isnt hard, Home Health Care providers definately shouldnt be exempted. The basic point i am asking is you opinion on wether or not this is constitutional. eddo Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 Were "amusement park workers" singled out by name in the minimum wage increase? is so, that is awful random. Do you know why you are exempt? Quote I'm trusted by more women.
dshogan1 Posted January 20, 2007 Author Posted January 20, 2007 The amendment, Article II Section 34a of the Ohio Constitution, says the term "employee" carries the same meaning as under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act except that it does not include people employed at their employer's home on a casual basis. Im not sure why this exempts amusment park workers, but it does. Ohio has 4 amusment parks i beleive. That is something like 15000 workers alone. phreakwars Posted January 21, 2007 Posted January 21, 2007 It's 5.15 here in Nebraska, but I usually will start the kids off at 5.25 an hour. And then after they have been there a while, I increase to .25 cent every 3 months till they peak out at 6.25. That's $1.00 less then what minimum wage is supposed to be going up to ($7.25), but I can't really afford to pay more at this point in time. After the bank loans for the franchise are paid, it won't be much of a problem, and I really am NOT against raising the minimum wage. I do however think that if it is raised, that anyone under 18 or 19 should be exempt... chances are, if you have teens working for you, they will probably quit when they graduate and be off to college to earn better money, and them working for you is just for spare money for clothes and shit. Most any kid will probably have mom and dad backing them up. Adults on the other hand, are an entirely different matter. . . Quote https://www.facebook.com/phreakwars

I own a seasonal restaurant and employ kids who want to work during the summer, but not during the school year. I start them out at $5.25 as well and then give them opportunities to EARN raises rather than just handing them out freely. While I really didn't want to raise my prices this year, with this big of a minimum wage increase I don't see how I can afford not to. Quote
dshogan1 Posted January 21, 2007 Author Posted January 21, 2007 I agree that people either in High School or Under Age 18 should be exempted. THIS IS WHAT I MEAN!!!!!!!!! you can't be so mathamatically illitarate to beleave bringing up the minimum wage will somehow make life easyer for employees, it just fucks with prices. and if you so ignorantly insist to go forth with the increase, but leave anyone under 18 out of it, then you are making it even harder on anyone that is 16-18 that is on their own AND now has to deal with making the same amount of money, but pay more for things. only a bull-headed idiot would beleave that a higher minimum wage is the solution. omg, that would make the democratic party a bunch of fucking retards now wouldn't it? I think you missed what she was saying here... She's saying that she doesn't want to have to raise her prices, but if this minimum wage increase is forced down her throat, she'll have to or go broke... Is that about right Ali? btw, M60, not an attack, just an FYI Now my opinion on minimum wage... I am really starting to hate minimum wage increases... Every time these fucking things go up, I have to pay more for shit... I havent made minimum wage since I was scanning groceries at the local market in highschool... I make over $10 an hour, but I've made the same amount of money for the last 4 or 5 years... I make 'x' amount of money... I barely survive on my own spending 'y' amount per month. Now, if the minimum wage goes up to 'j' and the amount i spend per month goes up to 's' then 'x' is no longer enough money... x-y=ok; x-s= ; stop raising the fucking minimum wage, you dumb fucks! If you have to raise it, raise it for everyone... leaving people out is gay. Ya better be right...
retarded Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 As an employer I have carefully considered all my options, and a increase in the minimum wage could easily be offset with the illegal immigrants. and although my opinion means dick, i also think that retards and piss-brains should also be exempt from minimum wage Quote

It's not just the Mom and Pop businesses that get screwed in this deal, but middle class salaried professionals as well. I agree with Phreak about minors being exempted from the raise though. Most kids are still being supported by their parents, so the paycheck isn't really a big deal at that point. ...That's so stupid! D: Quote I want to report a double murder. jokersarewild Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 Ok, it's a fact that minimum wage makes things cost more. Or raising it does, at least. And I understand not wanting to make certain ages of people exempt from it. However, there are those, like me, who plan on moving out when they're 18, or soon after. So, I should have to fend for myself with less money than my coworker who is 21 and spends half of their paycheck on booze and weed? Something about that doesn't sound right. Oh yeah, it's the whole thing. And what about emancipated minors? And minimum wage is set to go up in CA to $8.00 ph effective in January '08. Which is quite a big amount for minimum wage. Ironically, I kinda hate this state and want to get out. But that's another matter entirely. I don't know how many of you remember how difficult it is for a minor to get a job. I have put in applications/resumes to pretty much every business in my current town, and the town about 10 miles north of where I live. Guess what? I'm not employed. I tried checking up on applications and such. Guess what? That just annoys them. They don't want us teens because they think we do drugs/drink/suck in general. So we get fucked one way. Now you're proposing we don't even get to be on the same compensation level as others when we do manage to get a job? Again, that's not right. Just realize that even though you think that we all are being supported by parents, realize that there are those of us who will have to work for a living while they're still 17/18/19.
