woodyloveslinkin Posted February 6, 2008 Author Posted February 6, 2008 It lasted for a good three hours. Cos my friend Heather who's a real hardcore fan of Nightwish and Toumas (the keyboarder) missed out on merchandise and got a copy of the setlist and showed it to Maddi, Alice and I. And they had actually written down on the setlist when and who was going to speak, it said MARCO --- and then ANETTE ---- lol. Ahh, I'm moving on Sunday and my farewell party is at the park on Saturday and I have to catch up my teacher Burdie aka Cassie that I have befriended on Friday night. And my room is not clean whatsoever lol. Quote Mia Elizabeth 18/2/10 Kate Helena 8/7/11 My baby girls <3

I lost my USB today so I have to email a lecturer to ask him if he can give me a copy of my assignment in which he has on his computer as a draft ready for Tuesday. Im getting sick of my hair. I feel like shit today. I want Daniel back so ever so quickly and I don't know why...I think I miss his companionship...I'm just not used to not talking to him on a regular basis that's all. He brought me dinner last night that was good and I abused the crap outta Amanda behind her back... I left my folder in the computer room today, and I only just realised this when I got off the bus and was halfway down the street where I drew a drag and swore at the top of my mental voice as I was listening to Jewel singing this same exact song. woodyloveslinkin Posted April 20, 2008 Author Posted April 20, 2008 Well. Had my photoshoot today. Only Kate turned up lol. Starting of my day. I woke up at 9 after going to bed at 1 am. Not sleeping properly. Damn depression does this to you. On top of that, I might have bipolar :'( but Daniel's being really supportive and has made me dinner a couple of times I don't know I cannot stop talking about Daniel....maybe cos I'm sorta back with him. But not so full on. I think, and he thinks it as well, is that we were too busy trying to change each other and that's what started it all. I met up with Daniel today. Had a really interesting "Abortion Pro and Con" debate. I said it's a personal choice not a political debate. Even that stupid book that he was reading out of, had something to counter the cases of abortion in rape and incest. It was full of shit. I was at KFC with him, after buying two bottles of soft drinks from Woolies. He met up with his mate Chris, and got caught hugging me by him, cos Daniel had told Chris that we had broken up. Then went off to do my photoshoot. Me and kate had an awesome time by ourselves. smoking half the time lol. I'll post them when I get them developed and scan them in. They are actually for my photography assessment....in which they really aren't, but it's building my portfolio. On the way back, as Kate was dropping me off, ran into Daniel and Chris. Usual smiles he gives me. I'm getting hit on by Allastair and Tom at the same time. Tom's my age, while Al is Dan's age, 25. I'm having chinese for dinner ^^ Uni tomorrow GRP lecture and workshop.....this is going to be a fucked up day tomorrow for me. Quote Mia Elizabeth 18/2/10 Kate Helena 8/7/11 My baby girls <3

So take a look at it and be comment or whatever. grr I hate Illustrator. I prefer Photoshop. ______________ ‘Signs depend our on ability to interpret them’. Discuss this statement, offering several informed examples of different sign-systems, how and when they are used, and what we use them for. Compare and contrast extensively, establishing the different signs and uses, both historically and contemporaneously. There are three types of signs, an index which that denotes its object by virtue of an existential connection that it has its objects, an icon which denotes its objects by virtue of quality that it shares its objects, and a symbol is a sign that denotes its objects only by the virtue of the fact that it is interpreted to do so. It is because of the establishment of different sign systems and the variation of sign systems throughout history that our ability to interpret them is so important because words describe and interpret signs, however cannot substitute the sign leaving it up to the interpreter to decide the meaning[1]. In addition to belonging to a sign system, some signs also belong to family groups, which have their own history[2]. Contemporary signs differ from the historic denotation of what it is considered to be a sign because of time’s ability to transcend a sign’s purpose. Because of semiology (or the study of signs); we able to compare and contrast extensively between the different sign systems both historically and contemporaneously. Semiology consists of three parts, syntactics (relation of signs to each other in formal compositions) pragmatics (relation of signs to their impacts on those who use them) and semantics (relation between signs and the things they refer to). Ferdinand de Sassure (1857-1913) emphasised that signs only acquire meaning and value when they are interpreted in relation to each other. He believed that the relationship between the signifier and the signified is arbitrary, there is no set relationship it’s completely random. However, Roman Jakoboson (1896-1982) convoluted on the conceptual idea of the manufacture and interpretation of texts does depend on the existence of codes or conventions for communication. Since the meaning of a sign depends on the code within its placed in, codes provide an infrastructure within which a sign makes sense. Hence, the interpretation of signs requires familiarities with the sets of conventions or codes currently in use to communicate meaning because a sign cannot operate until the audience distinguishes it from the background noise. Signs depend on our ability to interpret them and our ability to interpret body language is a necessity in order to communicate through the broad spectrums of human interaction. Body language is a term for communication using body movements or gestures instead of, or in addition to, sounds, verbal language or other communication. It forms part of the category of paralanguage, which describes all forms of human communication that are not verbal language[3]. Our interpretation of each other’s body language is an important form of communication and understanding as we share the world with about 3 billion other people. I.e. consistent eye contact can indicate that a person is thinking positively of what the speaker is saying. It can also mean that the other person doesn't trust the speaker enough to "take his eyes off" the speaker. While at the same time the lack of eye contact can indicate negativity. On the other hand, individuals with anxiety disorders are often unable to make eye contact without discomfort. Connecting back to Sassure’s model on our interpretation of signs and codes, being unsystematic and arbitrary, it is possible given with this model, that body language can be misinterpreted, especially eye contact as we are taught from a young age to look at the person who’s speaking to you and vice versa. If a person has anxiety disorders, they usually are uncomfortable and unable to maintain eye contact. Or if a person is fiddling with something but still maintaining eye contact within the conversation being exchanged, it indicates that the person is mentally distracted. It is even more plausible when we take the Sassure model away and replace it with Charles Peirce’s (1839-1914) theory based on his concept that signs establish meaning through recursive relationships that arise in sets of three and reject the idea of a stable relationship between the signifier and the signified. Object – anything that can be thought, whether as a concept or a thing, so long it can be able to be encoded in sign, representamen – the sign that denotes the object, and interpretant – the meaning obtained by decoding or interpreting the sign. Now using a different example to demonstrate his model, if someone came up to you and decided to randomly punch you in the face for no apparent reason, how would you interpret that type of physical body language? You would interpret that as you’ve done something to upset that person because it was a violent act. Anyone who is in their right state of mind, is not going to walk away simply without knowing the cause for a violent act because this is not a stable relationship between the signifier and signified therefore, put Peirce’s theory into place. Object – confused and angry, you’ve just been punched in the face for no apparent reason, representamen – your body language towards the other person, you’re frowning, you’re asking questions, you’re fighting back, interpretant – your opponent reacting to your fighting back, they fight back, they interpret your questions and answer you by saying that their partner has left them because of you etc. Modern day theorists believe that Peirce’s theory is the most accurate because the interpretation of signs requires familiarities with the sets of conventions or codes currently in use to communicate meaning as demonstrated in body language and these examples just given. Codes and signs do not only exist in a contemporary manner, but a short system of writing was patented in 1588 by the English cleric Timothy Bright called shorthand. By 1837 a new system of shorthand had come into force, one, that unlike the original patented version, was completely phonetic, like for an example, now, vowels are indicated with dots and dashes placed before and after the consonant signs. This is known as Pitman shorthand. By 1888, another version which was easier to execute because of its slanting and elliptical characters came into force in Ireland which was called Gregg shorthand. Shorthand is not taught in schools nowadays, but proves useful in recording court cases and reporting. Remember, the interpretation of signs requires familiarities with the sets of conventions or codes currently in use to communicate meaning because a sign cannot operate until the audience distinguishes it from the background noise. Show this to a teenager nowadays, and what is the chance that the teenager does know how to write any form of traditional shorthand? It’s a very slim chance because of the unfamiliar knowledge and the lack of usage nowadays. What is the chance that an aged English teacher knows how to write shorthand? It’s a higher chance then showing it to the teenager because of the higher chance of the teacher having more life experience with the traditional ways of speed writing. Since technology has advanced into more stages of advancements that many thought were impossible to achieve, shorthand has been modified to suit the users of emails. Shorthand is considered to be letters or numbers breaking up words to make the word quicker to type, i.e. Cya l8r (see you later) and ttyl (talk to you later). That is the modified version of shorthand, but shorthand’s origins remains very historic and is more recognised by Pitman Shorthand; Or Gregg Shorthand; Recognition, the interpretation and the purpose comes with the familiarities it’s all psychologically connected to the audience. Without those three things just previously listed, this type of code is useless and it means nothing, as it would mean nothing to a lot of the newer generation who haven’t been taught to write shorthand or they’ve never heard of the old system of writing because the interpretation of signs requires familiarities with the sets of conventions or codes currently in use to communicate meaning as demonstrated in shorthand. In comparison to body language, shorthand is a very traditional way of encoding and displaying a message, as its purposes and usage is starting to fade because of time’s ability to transcend a sign’s purpose. The interpretation of signs requires familiarities and shorthand is unfamiliar to a majority of the new generation of our population, compared to body language as we visually perceive and interpret on a regular basis. The ratio of our usage of body language to shorthand is somewhat larger because it occurs on a daily basis for us. The new generation of our population can and have proved to live without shorthand but not without body language, because body language forms a consistent role in communication and has always. Body language is easy to implement and we implement it every day on a conscious and a subconscious level, even as little as how you walk, or even at what speed you’re walking at can be interpreted and perceived. If you strut, you’re self indulgent and “up yourself.” If you walk fast, you’re in a hurry to get somewhere, if you walk slowly; you’re taking your time getting to a place, most probably hesitant about arriving at your destination. Shorthand is not readily available to us in our learning years, because of time’s transcending abilities, while body language is a must because that sets the foundation for our behaviour patterns and our interpretations for us in our older years. It’s a behaviour thing that we are taught from a young age. The strongest difference between shorthand and body language is the amount of time we’re exposed to it which leads the audience to interpret, recognise, and become familiar with it over time. Familiarity and exposure leads to our interpretation, as all three theories recognise in their theses, it’s demonstrated every day, and semiology has proven it. Hence, in conclusion, our interpretation depends on the variables involved. It depends on exposure, recognition, purpose, and familiarities psychologically connected to the brain. Body language as explained, it’s a natural instinct and it’s a behaviour that has been taught from a young age. While shorthand, is a human invented code where elliptical, dots and dashes etc replace consonants, prefixes, suffixes, plurals etc. It’s not a natural instinct, it’s a code used to communicate on a lined piece of paper. Without these dependencies we are not able to correctly interpret signs, codes, symbols, or indexes. Our interpretation depends on these variables and without them; they are meaningless objects floating in space and time. Bibliography “Shorthand.” Microsoft® Student 2006 [DVD]. woodyloveslinkin Posted May 11, 2008 Author Posted May 11, 2008 Hmmm...I haven't really written in this for a while. So I went to Narrandera yesterday...because Daniel on Friday was bored and he couldn't get hold of him. So he took a bus to Narrendera. I rang up yesterday asking what he was up to and he said he was there and his mum invited me to stay the night. I accepted. So I got my stuff together and went to the train ticket, only to be told that the XPT to Sydney was 1 hour and 10 minutes behind schedule and the XPT to Melbourne was delayed about 1 hour and 40 minutes. So we had to wait for those passengers. Started to talking to some cool kids which in the end I got their numbers. So the bus pulled into the petrol station and there Dan and his little sister Hannah was waiting. So my friends asked if he was the guy in white and I was like "Yeah" Then they started hooting and stuff. When I got off, they started to wave to Dan and Dan was like "What ... the ... fuck...?" I told him to ignore them. I got my stuff and when we were walking off I waved back to them, who they were waving desperately to seek my attention. Then Dan had borrowed his dad's car. Dan misses having a car, mind the fact he does have a valid licence, it's only cos his car is now unregistered and unroad worthy. So we got back to his place, he's got a cute dog, long hair Labrador called Rufous. Lovely dog. Walked in, only to see his mother was drunk. Lol. So we went out and got grog of our own and bought her some more. Hannah has aspurgus or some shit disorder like that, but she's really talented in graphics. So she's never heard of Photoshop so I told her and demonstrated some things I could do to it and she was like "Wow. I never knew you could do that." We played a game of scrabble...Dan won...then by that time I was pretty drunk so we caught a lift with his dad to downtown and went pub crawling. Ran into some interesting people that he knew. Played pool pretty shitfaced. Played some arcade games pretty shitfaced. I remember dancing to "Sunsets" by Powderfinger. Lol. I remember arguing with Dan over something in the early hours of this morning. We helped his mum and his little sister move houses. His dad seems awesome. They have a kitten called Tiger awww..so Dan was stirring the shit of the kitten all day until we had to get into the car and head back to Wagga Wagga. Went back to his place, I completed my graphics assignment, which we had to promote Wagga in a series of postcards. Yay. And I got some feedback from Dan. Pretty tired right now....so I'm gonna update some more of December's Shadow tomorrow night. Quote Mia Elizabeth 18/2/10 Kate Helena 8/7/11 My baby girls <3
