Stenners Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 This is new, seriously unlike everything else I will TRY to stick to this one album of the day, new concept of simply posting up Album of the day, I will try to keep it further in the back catalouges as I am covering new stuff in LPF Album Reviews. http://www.offtopic.forum/data/MetaMirrorCache/99d193cff48990d54936ebd569019887.jpg Neutral Milk Hotel In The Aeroplane Over The Sea Folk/Indie Released: Feb 98 And for an obvious choice of topic, i'm going to choose for what people that listen to this sort of stuff an obvious choice of record. Anyone well basically anyone that has heard this album eventually get won over by it, I remember when I first got given my Oink account that I would chance it. I heard good things about this album & i'd be damned if I was left out... I wasn't over keen on first listen & I didn't give it much more chance, when Toxic1 made the discovery that I had downloaded this album he persuaded me to listen again... and for that I thank him as this is a brilliantly produced lyrical marvel which sounds intimate, personal & most important emotional. The vocals on this album are mind blowing, you can almost picture Magnum picking up an accoustic guitar and singing all of this stuff right in front of you the vocals remind me of a young Bob Dylan, the inclusion of various brass instruments and such show you were the likes of Arcade Fire are aiming but thus far missing, this is a beautiful album which has aged superbly & will forever be rememberd as a milestone in indie music, it was also listed in the top 10 albums you have never heard. Well now days maybe not so much, they still have a large and curious fan base who have been waiting & I shit you not, 7 years for a follow up. For now anyways who remembers this group? These Turntablists/ Producers hit it big with smash hit 'Frontier Psycyatrist' tearing up the UK & Aus charts. What you have hear is an incredibly fun and dancey record which offers up lots of fun playful dance music I guess, not crappy hardcore dance music which is just a repetetive drone with thumping, no this is fun an original & reminds more of 'Beastie Boys' rather then 'Groove Amada'. I pretty much put extracts of this abum or the entire album on when I throw a party or am asked to provide music for parties, it's theme, tune & key promotes a degree of emotion as well, it's not cold like most dance music which is often left to do just the one thing & thats to get people to dance. This one scores on multiple lessons because it can be enjoyed in a dancing situation or just on a general listen as the is tones and keys to connect to, the vinyl sounds & the way it bleeds into each track is just another reasson why I love this album. Toxic1 Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 Both albums listed above are quite amazing and are great cds to have in your collection. Good luck Stenners on keeping this thread going consistently. Wouldn't an "Album of the Week" been a little easier to maintain? From what I notice, alot of people here have a hard enough time listening to a new album every month let alone every day. Quote

Stenners Posted September 10, 2007 Author Posted September 10, 2007 It's midnight, im bored http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/41VlHPOqo2L._AA240_.jpg Pulp Different Class Britpop/Pop October 1995 The era of britpop produced alot of bands, some were good & some were okay + the were alot of shit ones along the way. To me Pulp were the best one, not Blur & not the horrendously over rated Oasis..... Verve could of done it but they sort of blew it last second with Urban Hymes which was okay but a bit cliche. Anyways back to this album, what is the to say about this album? It's very rare for albums to have such massive appeal to people into Alternative music and the mainstream... not only does this album do this it is also a firm faviroute of both classes. The synth pop almost new-wave in style was a band around a decade into their career and this is where they peaked, the lyrics are funny and whitty but with minimal effort and minimal change in sound the band could go from whitty & funny to creepy & it is that which I really admire about this album. Nothing sounds forced, the hooks are everywhere, the isn't much more catchy albums, it's an album suited for several occasions and full of plenty of floor fillers. It's an album of pop genius & is pretty much sums up what pop music should be all about, catchy, whitty & clever... with a couple suprises and interesting arrangments thrown in you have a great album... the 2 singles that everyone remembers from this album 'Common People' & 'Disco 2000' to this date in the UK occupy a large number of air time on the radio. The minimal nature of this album is particually appealing, it adds to the sense of paranoia and lonliness that this album is trying to emote and it does it with such devestatingly unreal effect, it's just an album that sends shivers down your spine whenever you hear it, it's just an album that you know won't be replicated, it's just one of those albums you can stick your neck out on the line for and say 'THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS EVER MADE'. The production on that note is also superb, the vocals hit you without over powering the drums, guitar or keyboard, the mix is done in such a way that the part that should stand out, stands out I have said it once and I have said it before, I believe this is one of the greatest albums ever made. Usiel Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Nice music, guys... well, in my case, I've chosen this one: (I'm sorry Matt, dear, forgive me, but I think I had to do it, just for remember a part of my past) http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/2244/portada20120discocu6.jpg Shalom Shalom Rock classic January 1990 Well, I'm sure, soo sure, no one know them. As you'll guess, they're spanish and they're from where I live (This is one of the reason, I posted it here). Some of their song are amazing: Gente sin fe (People without faith) Solo en la Niebla (Alone in the Fog). Lot of people considered them great and although this band isnt exist actually, There's lot of people who still remind them. They got a nice success at the beginning of the nineties but luck wasnt with them and now they're a listless rock legend of the past. For more information or details, you've this http://webs.ono.com/shalom/. Unfortunately for some of you, it's in spanish, but well, there are some vids and lots of pics where you neednt to know my mother tongue (although you should know it a little bit :-P ) At the beginning, I said that if I posted it here it was 'cos I've some reasons to do it. The first one it's already said, but, there's one more. Shalom was part of me, part of my past, and although they dont exist as a band nowadays, they marked my life in the music's world. They were my first band and with them, I could know that music is part of my life even when I wasnt born yet. They got it, the two guitarists (my uncles) and the manager, my dad. Quote [broken External Image]:http://img395.imageshack.us/img395/1977/luna640gp0.jpg ...oPeN yOuR mInD fOr A dIfFeReNt vIew'n NoThInG eLsE mAtTeRs...
Stenners Posted September 13, 2007 Author Posted September 13, 2007 Seeing as this might be the final one for a little while due to circumstances, I might as well do it about one of my faviroute albums of all time.... and alot of you that know me better will see this one comming. http://www.offtopic.forum/data/MetaMirrorCache/1d176147b207b2bcd9154ed973502903.jpg Modest Mouse Moon & Antarctica Indie/Alternative June 2000 This album pretty much is the soundtrack to my college years & still pretty much is I don't think many albums have had as much lasting impact on me then this album. It resembles many memories, highs and lows, an album where confussion, sense of doom and paranoia run free but also with the posetive negatives thrown in. It brings memories of me and friends on the beach playing 3rd Planet with our accoustics and pots from the BBQ we just had.... it reminds me of Paper Thin Walls being played at a house party where I met someone that I cared about, it's the album that braught me and other people I know closer due to common interest, this is the album that has shaped and moulded me to the person I am today... it may remind me of some things I don't want to remember but mainly it reminds me of some pinnacle moments of my life, when time was a bit relaxed and at the moment of my life when I felt a sense of improvment. The reasson this album has done this to me & other people I know is because it is simply about the uncertaintly of existance, questioning religion, society and ethics viewed by others, lyrically Isaacc Brock was on fire, you can forget your Float Ons, this is the stuff that hit hard. This was Modest Mouses debut for major label, sony owned Epic, this caused concerns amongst the Mouse fan base who had grown to love their Punky and Spontanious sound and while that is minimised on this effort it is still present, but the change in sound impresses rather then dissapoints.... this is band showed a sudden amount of growth in such a short space of time... this is an album that displayed an artist who has just realised something pretty deep & heavy and it was genuine growth. Bands constently try to re-invent their sound... Linkin Park for example recently did this but that sounded forced and top relevent to the current trends, this album on the other hand seemed so natural & for a major label debut, was the total opposite of what you would expect, where as before they were noisey yelpy and generally scitz for the most part with the odd accoustic song thrown in, this album showcases mainly sounds of the more melodic and gentle kind but deliverd in a very spacey bleek and in an emotoinally embarking way, it is the type of music you would expect to hear on a revelation... on a journey of self realisation. The are plenty of songs on this that I will consider all time faviroutes and certainly would generally rank amongst the best of the 00's, 'Tiny Cities Made Of Ashes' with it's bouncey catchey bass line goes from bouncey infectiousness to one of the most brilliantly deliverd hooks/choruses your ever likely to hear. Isaac could of easily botched this chorus up and made it sound artificial by trying to adjust to the ears of potential listeners, instead he just spazz's, spazz's hard.... his deliver of 'DOES ANYBODY KNOW A WAY A BODY COULD GET AWAY?!?!?!' delivers the sheer confusion, anger and fear such a statement should provoke, it isn't deliverd to please listeners it's deliverd to reflect what he is feeling. Then you have 'A Different City' a general statement to modern civilisation, the feeling the music provokes is a very hectic one, full of anger and general confusion "I'm watchin TV I guess thats a sollution/I got given a recipte that said I didn't buy nothing' which can roughly translate to 'I thought I got a solution but really I got nothing'. 'Paper Thin Walls' has a cow bell and is incredibly poppy but the actual message is all about paranoia.. the title does sort of suggest this 'these walls are paper thin/and everyone hears ever single sound' or 'everyones a vouyer watchin me watch them right now' which implies what you think about others also applies to you.... another good line from said song is 'its been agreed the whole world stink/so no one showers anymore' as in Everything sucks lets give up on approving it, if everyone else is like it why should I be any different? I could go on but the spacey feeling, the abrupt guitars, shows a much darker & enlightening Modest Mouse then previous and indeed proccesing records, it is pretty much a one off from them and whilst they have shown some moment like this in previous records and ones after to varying degrees of success nothing really quite hit the spot like this did. It may be a tad over long but if you perservier with it you would experiance the feelings and emotions of Isaacc at the time as well as hear some genuinly thought provoking lyrics, this album is one of if not my all time faviroute & I know it's not the best album in the world but those in a moment in their life of self discovery, paranoia, lonliness or generally confused should give it a quick listen as the is something that is bound to relate to you. I could go on Now most bands would probably have been inspired by this release in particular, 1987's Doolittle saw a band jumping away from convention in an era which had been very inconsistent musicly... this is the album that inspired the grunge movment, mainly Smells Like Teen Spirit, which was Kurts attempt to sound like the Pixies. This album is full of memorable songs, you would of heard a good half of the album before listening to it without realising it, 'Here Comes Your Man', 'Monkey Gone To Heaven', 'Debaser', 'There Goes Your Gun', 'Pain'.... all of these songs I had heard before I had even listend to the album. The play on vocals is great the way Black and Deal harmonise and bounce off of each other is great & a real odd couple, yet it works so well. Deal's soft more melodic vocals over Black's Barks, Yelps and Screams is the perfect combonation, this was also the album which shows more range to Pixies, although 'Sufa Roser' was a superb album, it lacked the diversity shown here.... this album has everything from Punk, Noise Rock, Pop Rock & just well... rock & because it jumped so far away from Convention it sounds like an album released recently rather then in the 80's & that is the main reasson it is todays album of the day, the fact that after almost 20 years this album still sounds like it was made this year. Music Videos: Debaser http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2mCoOlUjhlc Monkey Gone To Heaven (Live 2006) http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lRRrTl2J2w8&mode=related&search= Facts: Doolittle appeared on several end-of-year "Best Album" lists; both Rolling Stone and The Village Voice placed the album tenth, and independent music magazines Sounds and Melody Maker both ranked the album as the second best of the year. NME also ranked the album highly, placing it fourth in their end-of-year list A range of music magazines have since acclaimed Doolittle as one of the quintessential alternative rock albums of the 1980s. Rolling Stone, reviewing Doolittle again in 2002, gave the album five stars out of five, remarking that it laid the "groundwork for Nineties rock."[42] Doolittle has received a number of international accolades and is consistently noted as one of the best albums of the 1980s in any genre.[41] Following its release, Doolittle sold steadily in America, and broke sales of 100,000 after six months. By early 1992, while the band were supporting U2 on their Zoo TV tour, the album was selling 1500 copies a week. The middle of 1993, two years after the band's last album, Trompe le Monde, saw sales average 1200 per week. Doolittle was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in 1995.[48] Ten years after the breakup, Doolittle was still selling between 500 and 1000 a week; the reunion tour saw sales creep back up to 1200 a week. Before Bloc Party where produced to death, this album offerd a slick, polished yet disjointed sound which provided some of the best songs from 2005, Helicopter perhaps being the strongest example of this... it is pretty much the ultimate indie disco floorfiller of recent years, it has not 1 but 2 hooks! Which in it's self is pretty impressive as they both shatter what most british guitar bands hone on. Other songs such as 'Shes Hearing Voices' and 'Banquet' are also great songs to dance to, the majority of the album is up beat and before they got schitzo politicical on us they did some good honest fun songs. It's hard to rate this album now without a degree of backfire after the dissapointing 'A Weekend In The City' but I still rate this album very highly and for those of you that haven't heard this album, do check it out. Billy had problems and the was absoloutly no doubt about it, he was this close to quiting.... then he wrote 'Today' one of the finest rock songs of the 90's. If that's not enough reasson to seak out this album how about the dramatic symphonic ballad 'Disarm' the brilliance that is 'Cherub Rock' and the rocking.... errrm 'Rocket'. All in all this showed a band in the Grunge genre that actually had variety, diversity and creativity.... in my opinion this album easily surpasses the over rated 'Nevermind' but not only did this album offer lavish melodies, ballads, heavy riffs but also walls of noise as well as guitar solos.... these elements which lacked in Grunge lead to it being a stale genre with little variety and therefor little life.... Pumpkins embrace these elements and have as a result crafted one of the most timeless Grunge albums of all time as well as one of the must haves of the 90's. Info In 2006, Q magazine readers voted Siamese Dream the 54th greatest album of all time.# In 2003, the album was ranked number 360 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Pitchfork Media ranked it as the 18th best album of the 1990s. "Siamese Dream" was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the Grammy Awards of 1994. Along with a nomination for Cherub Rock for Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal, this was the Pumpkins' first Grammy nomination. "Quiet" was set to be released as a single instead of "Rocket" but it never finalized. Two songs from Siamese Dream were included in Guitar World's list of the 100 greatest guitar solos of all time. It's always nice to see a Folk musician sounding truley different and this album does this very well 'Handcuffed To A Fense In Missisipi' is the deffinative track for first time listeners, it's trip hop beat storms threw, the hook is massive and it's a brilliantly approachable song. '10 Miles To Go On A 9 Mile Road' is one of my faviroute songs from the decade & people who get to hear this album, upon first hearing will probably immediatly think Beck, I mean considering he mixes Folk/Country/Trip Hop is enough to stimulate this feeling, but upon further listens you will realise how much more accomplished and varied 'Jim White' is as a musician. The album is at it's best when it goes from upbeat, uptempo warm music to cold down tempo & spacey music, the effortless transistion helps the albums overall appeal, on top of this musical ability here is also an album with brilliant tounge in cheek delivery & great whitt, offering lyrics that back up the quality of the music. 10 Miles To Go On A 9 Mile Road http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8qWahwJOM1I Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. This band is a genuine case of one that puts the music ahead of anything else & by only playing all age venues so that all their fans can see them increases the respect I have of this band even further. This, their 2nd full release showed the band going for herk-a-jerk rhythems and not being quite as high tempod as their debut it was a nice change in sound, a natural one, one that was pulled off very convinsing in such a way that the album provided was more then adaquoute to proceed 'Repeater' despite the high expectations placed on them as it was a brilliant record. This album shows some of the most inteligant Post-Harcore rock your likely to hear in the 90's & considering the band had only been around for 4 years by the time this album was released they do sound pretty mature whilst not being totally grounded. It's an accomplished album which should appeal to those looking at the roots of Harcore music & 90's underground rock Reclamation (Live) http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Ozi4U5pWc3w&mode=related&search= Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. Who would of thought belgians could do this? It's probably one of the best electroninca album (with rock dynamics) to come out in years. So why is this album so enjoyable? The synth is dirty, the vocals are pretty much perfect for the genre & the hooks are unbelivably strong.... it all sounds similar but its different enough to give the album it's own identity one of my favioroute songs, 'Black Gloves' is high tempo'd and borrows rap as a main influence... it's just one of the punchiest and danciest electonica sounds your likely to hear. This is carried out threw out the majority of the album with only a few albums not really accomplishing their job. 10 Miles To Go On A 9 Mile Road http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8qWahwJOM1I At first, I thought you were reviewing an album by the great Jim White of Dirty Three. I was like "how did I not know of this". Alas, it's a different Jim White. Hehe. By the way, all great album recommendations so far. This album and artist above I'm unaware of though. --------- Will you be recommending anytime soon, arguably, two of the best albums of all time by Talk Talk? Quote

This bands debut full lenght LP shows a band dipping in and out of Prog Rock, Metal, Gothic, Indie.... the list goes on. The majesty of this? The fact it all works together so well going from all out destructive heavy riffs to the most tentalisingly soft and dreamy melodies so effortlessly, so suddenly truly keeps the listener guessing. This is by no stretch of the imagination a pop record with no song clocking in at under 6minutes I guess one of the best comparissons for this band would be the likes of 'Mogwai' that thrive off of long instrumentalisation rather then going for hooks.... in fact this album is almost totally instrumental but the soundscape provided by these pieces of work are so lavish, unpredictable whilst at the same time focused & tantalising that you will find yourself comming to this album over & over again.
