I was pretty disappointed with that album...

there were nice moments on it but somehow for me it didn't really capture the spark they sometimes have...

it felt like some of the songs weren't going anywhere, but just floating around doing whatever

Earth and Those Who Tell The Truth are their best albums by a wide margin. However, EITS still don't hold a light to Do Make Say Think. DMST is currently the only band in the genre that matters. However, they really don't even really belong in post-rock to be honest. EITS is just too one dimensional and continue to do nothing really new or refreshing.

All you really need for post-rock classics are:

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden

Talk Talk - Laughing Stock

Bark Psychosis - Hex

Do Make Say Think - Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn

Do Make Say Think - Goodbye Enemy Airship The Landlord Is Dead

Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven

Elliott Smith

Either/Or

Folk

Feb 1997

Along with the likes of Bob Dylan this is the artist many Folk musicians inspire to be,

with elliott smith you either full into one of 2 camps... you either like Either/Or's more

lo-fi sound more or XO's slightly more refined and linier sound. I personally perfer this

album though plenty of my friends disagree... then again plenty also agree with me, to

me this is the pinnacle of his amazingly consistent... though tradgicly cut short career.

The album consists 12 songs and clocks in at a modest 36minutes, not that it's a problem

as this is 36minutes crammed full of some of the most emotionally honed and beautifully

written songs ever put on record, this is one collection of songs not worth missing out

on. 'Angele's is my faviroute Smith track of all time & features on this album where keyboard

chords wave in and out subtly around Smiths trade mark accoustic strumming, the lyrics

on this album are incredible and are deliverd with Smith whispery vocals which make them

sound authentic and heart felt. Some people may complain about his vocal style of being

too whispery but I believe it's pretty much perfect, another major highligh on this album

is the late night lonley drinking inspired 'Between The Bars' where the more ambitious

though slightly less effective tracks such as 'Ballad Of Big Nothing' provide the hooks

and melody required to intise people into exploring the greater depths of this album.

Although due to the manor these songs are performed Youtubes muffled sound impair the impact very heavily.

All instruments on this recording were played by Smith.

"The Enemy is You" appears as the final track on Japanese pressings.

"Angeles", "Between the Bars", and "Say Yes" were used in the soundtrack for Gus Van Sant's film Good Will Hunting, along with "No Name #3" from Roman Candle and an orchestral version of "Between the Bars."

"Between the Bars" was covered by Madeleine Peyroux on her 2004 release Careless Love.

The Emperor X song "Raytrancer" includes the line "Did you ever get sad on your bed late at night, crying, listening to Either/Or?"

The 2004 film The Girl Next Door features a snippet of "Angeles" played during one of the film's opening scenes.

The Decemberists

Her Majesty

Chamber Rock/Indie/Indie Pop

September 2003

Decemberists are one of those bands it's hard to pin point their peak or best effort

they are one of those bands that I seem to enjoy as a whole, the isn't much about

this band that doesn't appeal to me. Rather contreversily i'm only one of two people

I know that places this album as their faviroute from the Decemberists... & I be damned

if I change my mind now. I will stick by the fact this is their best album, the combonation

of Belle & Sebastian and Neutral Milk Hotel in musical style is an odd choice of mix but

it works superbly, offering us with some lovely indie pop. It's not all poppy though the

is moments of self indulgance with many chamber rock qualities which suit the lyrics

to a tea, unlike many bands the self indulgant areas are actually the highlights of the

album... where as usualy they are just self indulgant and uneccisary... here they

sound totally neccisarhy otherwise it would just be another indie pop album. If you wish

to start off with this band, this isnt a bad place to start but it's in it's long term enjoyment

and when you get to experiance and whitness the albums growth... thats when it comes

into its own.

The Shins

Chutes Too Narrow

Indie Pop

October 21st 2003

How do you top one of the best debut albums of the naughties? Easy

come out with Chutes Too Narrow, a modern classic. This is one album

I have heard from this millenium that I can say that about, I'm wary about

labeling CDs classic but this one just has everything about it that is required

to be classed a classic. The most ideal album for days out in the sun, lounging

around with a beer, with it's beautiful hooks & harmonies as well as a key sense

of melody. James Mercers vocals are brilliant & the required mood to the music

that is laid out in front of you, an album with so many brilliantly done pop songs

should never be forgotten about & this is one album that probably never will and

will probably be rememberd as one of the best albums of the decade.

Weezer

Weezer (Blue Album)

Punk/Pop/Rock

May 1994

This album show cases Weezer in their mid ninties prime when their sound

was very much modeled on Pixies meets Stadium Rock ethstetics. This album

is breaming with hooks, melodies & charm, the guitar and general musicmanship

on this album may be very simple but it's done effectivley with each song having

an edge to it which allows it to tickle that part of your brain that scream 'ch00000n'.

This album has the infamous 'Buddy Holly' which is a great song for those days

where you just want to listen to something for sheer enjoyment, 'Say It Ain't So' &

'Undone - The Sweater Songs' are other notable singles from a very fine Pop Punk

album.

Broken Social Scene

Broken Social Scene

Indie/Alternative/Experimental

Released: October 2005

This isn't a band, it's a collective & a damn fine one at that, possibly the best

collective collection of musicians ever to have formed. These spritley canadians

feature artists such as FEIST, KEVIN DREW, METRIC, APOSTLE OF HUSTLE &

others totalling to somewhere around the 15 mark. They make such a diverse

range of music and this is shown further on this release then ever before, from

sprawling indie rock to hypnotic melodies & epic ballads as well as the odd bit

of folk & rap and yes some hip hop and electronic moment, this is a hybrid which

shows the concept behind 'Hybrid Theory' to be rather tame. It's a spine tingerling

album with everyones faviroute track varying drastically & a true statement of

something for everyone and quite often the simple YOU WILL LOVE IT ALL or LOVE

SOME OF IT but never hate it comes into place..... it's truley one of the most

beautiful records of our time. Tracks such as 7/4 (Shoreline) are the rocky up beat

ones where as 'Swimmers' is a heart string plucking masterpiece with the following

track 'Hotels' being a haunting electronic endevour.

If your a fan of hybrid music, any of the aformention artists such as Feist, complicated

music, melodic music, rocking music, hip hop, folk, electronica, Kevin Drew then the will

be something here for you and I suggest everyone try this little beauty of an album

out..... for your own good, for your childrens good and for your children childrens good...

anything after is usless as people will no longer have ears and will have some sort of

anus sense which creates the sensation of cheese!!!! damned irony :(

You forgot to mention members of Do Make Say Think. Anyhow, "You Forgot It In People" is the much better album. I can't stand some of the production choices of this self-titled album. The dip in audio for 7/4 Shoreline is unbearably bad as well as the chorus for Fire Eye'd Boy among many other detractors. The producer (member of BSS) went overboard and crammed too many instruments/tracks into each little crevice of the songs. He had no discretion at all this time around. Alot of moments are awash and messy to the point where certain instruments became barely audible because the instruments were fighting each other's bandwidth (aka too many of the same frequencies from different instruments occupying the same space).

Song OF The Day!!!!

http://http.dvlabs.com/havoctv/dvflv/music/Bumblebeez_PonyRide.jpg

Bumblebeez <> Pony Ride

Alt/Hip Hop/Electronic

Has to be watched for the video alone recently, as pictured, the band

has just released 'Dr.Love' which is really good but this is just a brilliant

genre crossover song. It's got shifting beat & noise with a gritty guitar

riff under it all... it sounds very dirty but is extremely approachabe and

was a hit at the time of release! I suggest you guys really do check this

out, it's got a very nice sound to it & the video is just incredible.

Black Flag

Damaged

1981----> Hardcore Punk

This album presents one of the best hardcore albums ever to come out... not

to mention a very versatile one. This album comes out at the time where the

hardcore scene was on a rise & this was one of the front runners, at the time

of release this album was outrageously criticised soley for its bellowing and

aggresive nature... which has sort of become second nature these days. As

I said earlier this album is very versatile & this is it's biggest strength, many

hardcore albums purley rely on bellowing or screaming where as this does a

bit of both & with some brilliant thrashy guitar and some feroscious drumming which will

get anybodies adrenerline rushing. Whilst most of these songs are sticking it

to the man, the is alot of humour to be found here too... which is refreshing

as this was a time where all hardcore bands weren't all doom and gloom but

genuine punks. I suggest if you like anyform of heavy rock music be it Metal,

Hardcore, Punk and even fans of Noise rock and alternative should check this

album out.

Patrick Wolf

Wind In The Wires

2005--> Alternative/Singer Songwriter

Patrick Wolf was only 17 when he released his critically acclaimed debut which

embraced heavy electronic beats with dark themes running alongside classical

and english folk ethics. His sound was a pretty unique one amongst the drones

of clone singer songwriters currently on the scene, by the time of this albums

release Wolf was only 19 & not only does this album better it's predoccesor but

this was the album that opened the gates for the mainstream success he would

later fully capitalize on with 'The Magic Posistion'.

The theme of this album is pretty much unchanged from 'Lyncantheory' it's still

about a troubled and lost boy with subtle dark natures and of a troubled boy

who just want's to find his place in the world. However this album is a whole lot

more approachable and offers far more slower and melodic tracks then it's predoccesor

although it does offer some of his hookier affairs. The opener 'The Libertine' in

it's own right is a great song to dance to, whilst 'Tristan' takes a more hectic

and punkier approach to his existing formula. The melodic moments though are

something to be admired, songs such 'Wind In The Wires' & 'Teignmouth' are

beautifully melodic and will have you humming the melody and feeling attached

to the song in no time at all & with Patricks sweet vocals swooning over the

tracks you are likely to fall in love with his persona all together.. an essential

album.

Mmmmmm... Patrick <3

The Libertine is one of my favourite tunes at the mo, it's utterly fabulous, and I like the funny little Irish-sounding tune in in that you can just totally do a jig to.

i still love you, girl from mars.
