Chapter 1: “Derek Nicholls”

“We’re really sorry about the delays sir, but we’ll be landing in the next 30 minutes,”

“It’s about time!” Derek Nicholls was glad that he’d be finally going home. The flight was only meant to go for 8 hours, but it ended up being a 12 hour flight due to some sort of difficulty. The arguing couple behind him and the sweaty snoring fat guy beside him weren’t helping the time pass any faster either. He stroked his wavy dark brown hair back behind his ears, adjusted his sunglasses and tried to relax just for the last 30 minutes of the flight. He cursed at himself under his breath for the hundredth time for forgetting to bring the earphones for his mp3 player.

Derek Nicholls was a 36 year old limousine driver. He was known for his short temper and impatience, which sure was being tested by the people on the flight. He had no immediate family apart from his mother and father, and an older brother that he didn’t really consider family because he hadn’t seen him for nearly 25 years.

“Hey, buddy, I know how you feel,” an American voice called out from across the aisle. Derek sighed and rolled his eyes, but pretended he cared about what this guy was going to say. “My wife and I are just as angry as you are about this.”

The man was probably in his early to mid 40s, black and bald. His shoulders were very broad and his chest was big, he obviously kept himself very fit.

His wife was sitting beside him. She was thin and had her jet black hair tied back in a ponytail. She had striking green eyes and a very mysterious smile. Almost like she was hiding something.

“It’s bullshit, isn’t it?” Derek replied. “4 hours late. I haven’t really got a deadline or anything, but I don’t want to spend any more time on this plane than I need to.”

The man nodded. “My name’s Ajay, my wife here is Jade,” the man leant over to shake Derek’s hand.

“Mine’s Derek,” Derek introduced himself with a polite but fake smile as he shook Ajay’s hand.

Once again Derek rested his head back against the seat and shut his eyes. He tried to imagine being back home, where he lived on his own. The peace and quiet, the serenity, not having to worry about anything else but himself.

The plane took a sudden jolt. There were exclamations of “Whoa!” and “What the hell was that?” throughout the plane. The exclamations grew louder when the oxygen masks dropped from above.

“You have got to be kidding me!” Derek shouted in anger.

The air hostess came out from the cockpit. “Everyone if you could please fasten your___” The plane suddenly seemed to plummet towards the ground. Screams broke out everywhere. Derek grasped the armrests as hard as he could. He squeezed until his knuckles ached. He gritted his teeth until his jaw felt numb. He saw the ground coming closer out window. He felt as if he was going to throw up, since his stomach was now just about in his throat.

They could feel the plane start to pull back up, and just as signs of relief were coming to the passengers of the flight, the plane jolted again.

“This is it,” thought Derek. “This is where my life ends. Didn’t even get to write out my will.”

The screams combined with the sound of the plane spiralling out of control were deafening. But it was all brought to an end with an almighty crash as the plane collided with the ground.

Chapter 2: “Stephen Terrel”

Stephen Terrel awoke suddenly, sweating and breathing heavily as he sat up. He looked around and blinked a few times then fell back down onto his pillow. He looked at the small clock radio beside him and sighed.

“Three-thirty… I’m not getting any better obviously.” He thought to himself. He rubbed his eyes a little bit and sat up again. He rested his head in his hand for a few seconds and got up. He walked into the bathroom in his hotel room and turned the tap on. He splashed water on his face and then turned the tap off. He looked at himself in the mirror.

“I’m a mess… I need help, really…” He thought as he examined his own face in the mirror. He was a tall man, in his early 20s. He had fairly long brown hair that was really messy, and bags under his eyes people would say they could see from a mile away. He hadn’t shaved for a little while and what facial hair he had was very messy. He almost looked like a homeless man, only cleaner. He seemed to stare a lot but really he was just zoning out, into his own world which, at most times, wasn’t a good world. He wondered why he had such problems in his head since he had a good life, a good family and awesome mates. Everything for him was great, until he was sent to Iraq to help in the war which he referred to as one which he would come back from soon, without harm.

He put his coat on and left his hotel room. He was tired, hurt and very messed up. He walked down the street with his hotel on it looking at all the homeless people as he went. He thought about how meaningless their lives must have been to have ended up like they have. It almost brought him to tears when he compared them to himself. They are never happy, but surviving, which he seemed to be doing the same thing. They are terrible looking and feel like they have nothing left, same with him. When he was young depression wasn’t a problem. It took a war to reduce him to what he had become.

He found his way down many streets and past many homeless people and eventually found the building he was looking for. “Doctor Richards Psychological Health Clinic”. He tried to open the door but it was locked.

“They could at least put a ‘closed’ sign up… Lazy bastards.” Steph said out loud by accident. “But then again, it is three thirty in the fucking morning.”

“How long have you been waiting here for?” A voice said out of what seemed like nowhere.

“Just now, who are you?” Steph replied looking around to see who had talked to him.

“My name is Doctor Richards, pleased to meet you!” The man appeared into Steph’s view. He examined the man who was short and stubby. He had very short hair and his most noticeable feature, a huge scar on his cheek. Doctor Richards smiled.

“Oh, I promise I’ll get a closed sign for your sake!” Doctor Richards joked. Steph laughed a little and suddenly tuned out of the sort of conversation for a second but forced himself to wake up. Doctor Richards opened the door to the clinic and turned the foyer lights on.

“I left some stuff here yesterday. Come inside and tell me, why are you here?” He asked. Steph walked in.

“I need to see someone here, I’m really messed up at the moment.” Steph replied. “Can you book me in for an appointment as soon as you can? I’m in a pretty bad way right now.”

“Sure, in fact, come back in about two hours so I can have time to set up. I have nothing better to do this weekend. All the mates are out of town.”

“Nice… Thanks…” Steph sat in a chair in the foyer and drifted off once again.

Its good to be back.

Chapter 3: Helping Out

“Yeah, just carry him over there and try to wake him up,” a voice echoed in Derek’s ears. He felt himself being carried by two people, one had his arms, the other had his legs. He tried to open his eyes, but the sunlight was too bright so he shut them again. He let himself be carried, and then set down on some grass.

“You, ok buddy?” another voice asked. Derek groaned in reply. “C’mon buddy, open your eyes.”

Derek struggled to open his eyes. Everything was blurry. He blinked a couple of times, but that didn’t help. “What’s happening?” As things began to clear up, he saw the two men leaning over him. Both looked to be fit and in their mid 20s. The man speaking to him was kind of tall, had dull red spiky hair and a strong jaw line. The other guy was short and stocky, had short brown hair and a goatee.

“Our plane crashed. We’re helping people out of the wreckage. You think you’ll be fine by yourself for a few minutes?”

Derek nodded and listened to the two men jog back to the wreckage. There seemed to be a sting under his eye. He put his finger to it and felt a very small shard of glass stuck in his bottom eyelid. He pulled it out and wiped the blood from under his eye. “Sunglasses must have cracked,” he thought. “Fucking brand new $200 sunglasses.”

He only then became aware of the noise surrounding him. There was shouting and cries of help surrounding him. The engine of the plane could still be heard, but was beginning to die down. Derek tried to move his head around to see the plane wreckage, but couldn’t move his neck. He pushed himself off the ground and sat up. He placed his right hand under his chin and his left hand on the right side of his head and pulled with both hands. There was a loud cracking noise as his neck was back in place. He looked around and saw people lying everywhere. Some were awake, some were unconscious or even dead, some were covered in blood, some with their clothes ripped to shreds. He then saw the wreckage. What a mess! The plane had been torn in two, and other parts of the plane had been spread out across the surroundings. Derek noticed some people helping others out of the wreckage and setting them down on the ground. He got up and ran over to help.

Derek saw the two men from before carrying another person out of the wreckage. The guy with the red hair saw him and said, “Hey, can you go and help Darin? He’s already in there,” He nodded his head towards the wreckage. “He’s the Swedish guy with the blonde hair.”

Derek stepped into through a gaping hole in the plane and saw the Swedish guy. He was wearing a yellow and blue tracksuit with the Swedish flag on it. Derek decided not to worry about the tracksuit. “Hey, need some help?”

“Help me with this woman, please,” the Swede talked with such an accent that Derek could barely understand him.

The Swede had one of the woman’s arms over his shoulder, so Derek took the other arm. The woman was conscious, but there was a trail of blood trickling from above her eyebrow. They walked her out where all the others were and sat her down. The Swedish guy jogged back to the wreckage but Derek stayed with the woman.

“What’s your name?” He asked her.

“Jean. Jean Pasquale.”

“Does your head hurt, Jean? You’ve got a bit of blood on your head there.”

“Uh… not really, I can’t really feel much right now,” Jean replied. “I’m kind of numb.”

“Okay, you sit here and rest for a while.”

After a couple of hours and a lot of work, they had everyone out of the plane. It was a mess, there weren’t many people that were alive compared to the dead. There would have been about 250 people on the flight in total, maybe only 30 that were still alive. Compared to the rest of the plane, the area where Derek was considerably less damaged, so most of the people that were still alive had been sitting in the same area.

Derek jumped when he felt a firm hand on his shoulder.

“Sorry, man. Didn’t mean to scare you,” it was Ajay, the man Derek had met on the flight. “You okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine thanks,” Derek replied. “I can’t believe this. I’ve never seen so many... dead people before. It’s terrifying, really.”

“I know what you mean. Just when you thought your day couldn’t get any worse, huh?”

Its good to be back.

Chapter 4: Doctors Suggestion

“So tell me about the dreams Mister Terrel.” Doctor Richards asked.

“I’m lying in my small room in Iraq, with my three mates. Its poker night and we’ve been playing for about an hour. Joey gets angry since he hasn’t won a hand for half an hour and Tommy assures him he’ll win eventually. Suddenly, the sirens begin to sound, signalling an attack on the small outpost. We all drop the cards, grab our weapons and run to check the situation out. As soon as we get out into the open we are shot at. Joey runs off to get help and leaves Tommy, Jess and me to hide and try our best to fight back. While we are hiding I suggest that all three of us get up at the same time and take shots at the enemy. The others agree. I count to 3 and we get up. Jess is hit in the head instantly and Tommy goes to help him, not realizing he is in plain view of the enemy. He gets killed. That’s when I wake up, after seeing two of my best mates die because of my idea.” Steph explained.

“Is this in any way linked to a real experience? And are the three friends you mentioned real mates of yours?”

“I was in Iraq and my small team of soldiers was attacked. Me and Joey were the only ones left alive when they were trapped by a bunch of guys. I’ve been crazy since then.”

“What’s Joey doing at the moment?”

“He’s still recovering from all the bullets he took that day.”

“Okay, I can only suggest one thing.” Doctor Richards paused.

“What’s that?” Steph was impatient.

“You need to convince yourself that it wasn’t your fault. Go and visit Joey and see if he’s in any better shape then you. If not you two will be really important parts of each others lives from now on. Here’s the thing, I’m going to have to go with you and help you out. If he needs help I’ll need to talk to him like I did to you.”

Steph nodded and forced a smile. He did feel a lot better after seeing a doctor but he was sure the dreams wouldn’t stop. He felt there was more meaning to them. Like there was a message that he was meant to take from them. Suddenly, Doctor Richards interrupted his thoughts.

“Tell me, are the dreams always the same?”

“Always the same…”

“Okay, tell me where we can find Joey and we’ll head off whenever.”

“Melbourne…”

“Go get yourself some sleep, I’ll get us the plane tickets now.”

Steph arrived home and went straight to bed just as the doctor had suggested. He slowly drifted off closer and closer to sleep, awakening fully every now and then with massive fear attacks. He couldn’t get the memories of Iraq out of his head. Then he thought of Joey and how he would be seeing him very soon. That brought him at least some joy. Some comfort from the memories, knowing that he was going to see Joey was a blessing. It had almost been a year since he had last seen Joey. He had been kicked out of the army due to insanity and Joey was relieved due to the uselessness of his legs. It was a few months later the doctors announced they could fix him back to full leg strength.

With all the thoughts going through his head Steph finally managed to get to sleep. All of a sudden, it was poker night once again.

Its good to be back.

Chapter 5: Something Needs To Be Done

For the fourth time, Ajay lowered his mobile phone from his ear. “It’s still engaged, I don’t think we’re going to get through to them.”

“This is ridiculous!” Ajay’s wife, Jade, complained. “There’s been a friggin’ plane crash and no police or ambulances or fire trucks or anything has shown up!”

Derek also felt himself getting frustrated. Ajay wasn’t the only one trying to get through to the emergency department. There were at least ten others on their mobile trying to get through, but with no luck.

“I think we need to take action,” the red haired guy appeared once again with his goateed friend. “Oh by the way, I didn’t catch your name before,” he said to Derek. “Mine’s Wesley. This is Remy”

“I’m Derek,” Derek replied and shook their hands. “I agree something needs to be done, otherwise we’re going to be stuck here for quite a while. I think we need to go for a walk.”

“We should set up a group of us to go and find help in the nearest town,” Ajay suggested. “A lot of people will want to stay here, so I say just a small group of us go. Maybe just us five.”

“Okay, sounds good,” Derek said.

“I’ll let everyone know,” Remy took it upon himself to announce it to the rest of the people.

Ajay walked over to the rest of the people and announced what was going to happen, while Derek and the other three discussed the plan.

“So, I think there’s a town that way,” Ajay said as he pointed north.

“Yeah, we’ll go into the town, find help and bring it back here,” Derek said.

Remy came back to the group. “Hey, Derek, is it okay if some more people come with us?”

“Umm… why are you asking me?”

“I don’t know, I kind of assumed you were like the leader or something…”

“Me? Uh… okay well how many people want to come?”

Remy looked back, then he said “Two.”

“Fine okay they can come. But no more.”

Remy went and collected the other two people, who were the Swedish guy in the tracksuit and his familiar looking girlfriend.

“Hey have I seen you somewhere before?” Wesley asked the Swedish guy’s girlfriend.

“Yes you have,” she smiled sweetly.

“Oh… okay… where?”

“I am Bianca Lund. I am actress in Sweden. I was in the movie ‘Don’t Stop’.”

“Oh that’s right! I’ve seen you on the cover of a DVD in Blockbuster!” Wesley realized. “Isn’t it a porno?”

She nodded. Remy put his hand over his mouth and tried to laugh as quietly as possible.

“Anyone recognize me?” the Swedish guy asked.

Everyone looked at him from different angles and shook their heads.

“I am soccer player! Darin Karlsson. I am striker for Wigan Athletic!” he said with a grin.

“Oh no wonder we don’t recognize you. Nobody cares about Wigan Athletic,” said Wesley. Everyone laughed. Darin wasn’t impressed.

Ten minutes later they set off towards the town. They thought they’d be able to find help and head back straight away. Little did they know what they were in for.

Chapter 6: What Is Going On?

Stephen and Doctor Richards left the airport as fast as they could. Steph was anxious to go and see Joey. He led Doctor Richards to a taxi and they both got in.

“Where are we off to?” The taxi driver asked with a smile.

“To the nearest train station, thanks” Doctor Richards smiled back. Steph didn’t say a word, the last thing he wanted was to speak to anyone. Joey and the Iraqi’s trap was going through his mind as usual. As the taxi drove around he slipped in and out of consciousness many times. He was tired but didn’t want to sleep.

He looked at the passing buildings and compared the streets to the streets where he lived, more pushy people and less homeless bums. He didn’t know whether to be happy, homesick or just ignore the place altogether. He watched as not only people pushed passed each other, but as laws were broken everywhere. So many people littering, people gang bashing others, taxi drivers fighting over the next passenger.

“How ridiculous!” He thought as he watched a police officer throw a cheeseburger wrapper on the ground. “It’s worse then home… Terrible!”

After what seemed like the hundredth time in the taxi he had awoken, he noticed they had arrived at the train station. He almost smiled at the thought of getting out of the taxi that smelled very odd. He jumped out of the taxi and left Doctor Richards to pay. He couldn’t take another second of the disgusting taxi. He almost wanted to throw up.

Doctor Richards put more then enough money in the taxi drivers hand and said “Keep the change,” with a wink. The taxi driver nodded in reply and smiled. Doctor Richards looked at the taxi driver closely. His face seemed very familiar.

Steph rushed up to the train station and waited for Doctor Richards. He had never had to ride on a train before, not at least since he was a young kid. After he joined the army he pretty much lived with his fellow soldiers, and was driven everywhere with them. But that was how he preferred it. He looked back on those times as the good old days.

Doctor Richards was still talking with the taxi driver. Steph didn’t care what he was talking about, as long he hurried up and got him to where ever Joey was. By the looks of things, the conversation in the taxi wasn’t getting close to finishing. But he couldn’t leave without Doctor Richards since he had forgotten the name of the hospital that Joey was in, which is why Doctor Richards was just a useful tool. A tool for locating Joey, which he thought would be the cure to his mental state.

Joey Mathers was proud of his progress, he had defied all the odds. He had survived many bullets to his legs and in less then a year he had learned how to run again, after long and painful surgeries on both his legs. He got the feeling he would be able to leave very soon, since he couldn’t really get too much better then he was feeling at the moment. He was a fairly tall young man who had short black hair, which as a kid he would shave swear words into. He had dark green eyes and had very large muscles, since he had been working out heaps since he regained the use of his legs.

He lay in his hospital bed and read the latest Mad Magazine which one of the nurses had got for him. He was sick of Mad, all the jokes seem so lame now that he is grown up. With nothing on TV he decided he’d try, for the thousandth time, to contact his fellow Iraq War survivor, Stephen Terrel. He grabbed his mobile phone off his bed and started dialling the number.

Suddenly he stopped. Something wasn’t right. Not only is the hospital, but in the streets below. He looked at the time, Twelve-Thirty PM. He moved to the window and looked down onto the street and what he saw confused him. The streets we’re completely abandoned. No cars, bikes, skateboards, dogs, cats, civilians or anything.

“NURSE!!!” He called out. A nurse came in quickly and looked at him. She nodded as if to say Hurry up ass-face? Joey didn’t reply, he just pointed out the window with a confused look on his face. The nurse quickly looked down. A puzzled look then appeared on her face.

“At this time the streets should be flooded with traffic. I can’t name one day in the last year that I haven’t seen a traffic jam in this area, at this time. Now there’s absolutely nothing. Strange isn’t it?” Joey said to the nurse.

“Yeah. Very strange, I’ll ask another nurse if she knows what’s going on. I’ll tell you what I find out since you seem very freaked by this whole thing.” The nurse replied.

“Thanks…” Joey said as the nurse walked out. “Bitch, give me that look again and I’ll throw you out this window.”

He laughed at himself and then sighed. He still really wanted to talk to Steph to see if he was doing any better. He grabbed his phone again and dialled the number, still looking down at the empty streets. He heard ringing, which didn’t mean a lot to him, since every time he called it seemed to ring a few times then a computer voice would ask him to leave a message. This time was no different. The computer voice began talking and Joey pressed the hang up button quickly. He felt like throwing his phone at the wall. Technology was one thing that got on Joey’s nerves. He decided to play it cool and put his phone on his bed. He got himself a drink of water and pulled a chair up at the window. He looked down out the window to see if anyone, or anything came into view.

Its good to be back.

Chapter 7: Them Things

“So where the hell is everyone?”

“I swear, Remy, if you ask that one more time I’ll rip that goatee off and make you eat it,” Derek snapped as he scratched his head in frustration.

They had arrived in the town and been there for twenty minutes but had not seen a single sign of life.

“Maybe it’s a public holiday,” Jade suggested. “Or there’s like a festival or a fair or something going on nearby.”

“It would have to be a pretty fucking popular festival,” Derek snapped again.

“Derek, dude, calm down,” Wesley said. “You’re not exactly getting on anyone’s good side here.”

“I don’t exactly give a shit, Wesley. It just doesn’t make any sense. Towns aren’t deserted unless there’s a really good reason.”

“Well, maybe there is a really good reason.”

They had checked in most of the windows of the shops down a couple of the streets with no luck. All the shop doors were locked and had a ‘closed’ sign hanging there. The windows of a couple of shops had even been broken.

Darin had been juggling a mini soccer ball he found somewhere in the luggage on the plane. It didn’t seem like he was paying any attention to the situation, until finally he said something.

“Hey, something was moving over there,” he pointed to the large window of a shop about 200 metres down the road. It had the words ‘Roasted Rooster’ printed across the top. It made the members of the group feel kind of hungry.

“Man, if someone is still working in that chicken shop I am gonna’ be so happy,” Ajay said as he rubbed his stomach.

“Are you sure you saw someone?” Derek asked. “I don’t see anyone in there.”

“Yeah, I’m sure something moved in there.” Darin replied.

Derek led the group to where Darin had been pointing. They looked in the window but saw no-one.

“Are you one hundred percent sure you saw something in here?” Derek asked.

“Well, maybe not one hundred percent. Maybe eighty percent. Or eighty five.”

Just then, they saw an old looking man with a small amount of grey hair and a grey moustache peek out from behind the counter.

“Why is he hiding?” Bianca asked.

“We’re about to find out,” Derek tried to get the old man’s attention. “Hey buddy, open up!” he shouted, pointing at the door.

They heard the old man’s voice through the glass window. “Piss off!”

“Ask him if they’re still serving chicken in there,” Ajay said.

“What’s wrong man? We just need to use your phone!”

“I said piss off! I know you’re one of them things!” Everyone looked at each other with confused expressions on their faces.

“Them things?” whispered Wesley. “What are them things?”

“What do you mean by ‘them things’?” Derek asked the man.

“Stop tryin’ ta trick me, you scum balls.”

Everyone jumped in fright as there was an almighty CRASH! The glass that Derek had been leaning on had shattered. He fell through and landed on the ground in the chicken shop. He sat up and looked around.

“What the fuck!” He saw Ajay’s massive muscly body lying on the ground next to him. He realised Ajay must have broken through the glass. Ajay picked himself up and walked over to the counter.

“What the hell is wrong with you, old man? We just wanna’ know why there’s no one in this town! And we need to use a phone! And we’re hungry so we want some chicken too!”

The man stood up behind the counter and pulled out a knife. The two girls outside screamed, and Ajay and Derek took a couple of steps back.

“Get your ass’s outta’ my shop!” he screamed. “You bastards broke the goddamn window. I got nothin’ left to stop ‘em from gettin’ in!”

“Stop who from getting in?” Derek asked trying to be as calm as possible. “What happened in this town?”

“I SAID GET YOUR ASS’S OUT!”

“WE’RE NOT LEAVING UNTIL YOU TELL US WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON!” The strategy of keeping calm kind of went down the toilet.

The man obviously didn’t expect Derek’s reaction, because his face expression changed from angry to mildly surprised. “You really aren’t one of them things?”

“We don’t even know what ‘them things’ are,” Derek replied, calm once again.

The old man looked even more surprised. “Well, you’re in for a pretty big shock.”

Its good to be back.

Chapter 8: Creep

“You know, I haven’t been on a train for years. Not since I was a kid!” Stephen told Doctor Richards to break some silence. The more silence there was the more chance there was he would fall asleep.

“Really? A much better ride nowadays isn’t it?” Doctor Richards replied.

“I can’t really remember… But this isn’t bad, I can remember I was so uneasy about any transport that wasn’t my dads car.”

“Damn… That must have been hard when…” Doctor Richards trailed off. He was out of things to say and he realized Stephen had tuned out. Suddenly Stephen’s phone started to ring. He pulled it out of his pocket and looked at the caller I.D. on the screen that only said “Private Number”. He decided to ignore it. He put it back in his pocket and tried to relax. When he looked out the window of the train he realized that he was getting more bored and impatient every time the train stopped.

“Are we nearly there?” He asked hoping for a good answer. “I’m getting impatient.”

“This is the last station we have to stop at before the Geelong station. We’ll walk to the hospital from there.” Doctor Richards said sounding just as positive as he had when Stephen had met him. His constant positive attitude got on Stephen’s nerves, it annoyed him that even though his life was in a wreck, this guy tried to make it seem like all smiles and sunshine.

“How can he be so happy all the time?” He thought. “…Because he’s rich? Because he feel lucky not to be like any of his patients? Both?”

The train started moving again and Stephen and Doctor Richards were two of only three people left on the train. There was a dark shady man standing at the door waiting for his station. Stephen didn’t like the look of him. He looked like the kind of guy who would stab someone for the fun of it. Steph knew he was packing a gun, which is why he didn’t mention the man to Doctor Richards in case they were overheard talking.

The train slowed to a stop suddenly. A voice rang out and explained that there is a minor problem that will only make the trip around ten minutes late. Stephen was angry. He punched the seat in front of him a few times and then put his head in his hands.

“Stuff this… This is totally unfair. Why now? Why does this bullshit have to happen now?” He said quietly.

“It’s going to be okay. Don’t worry!” Doctor Richards smiled. Neither of them noticed the shady man walking up to them. Suddenly he spoke.

“I think we should get off the train now…” He said in a deep scary voice.

“I think we should stay on the train and get the fuck to our destination!” Steph snapped. “And if your gonna kill me, go ahead and do it! I’m messed up anyway, nobody will give a shit!”

“I’m going to stay with you two. You’re going to need me. I can guarantee it.”

“Tell me… Mister… What on earth are you talking about?” Doctor Richards asked.

“Not even I’m sure. I got a phone call from Geelong… I’m having second thoughts about following this up. Anyway, I won’t be with you, I’ll be watching you. I can’t risk all of us at once.” The man backed away.

“Creep…” Steph grumbled.

“Shhh!” Doctor Richards put his finger to his mouth as if he was scared. “There was something I noticed on the way so far. There is no people on the sidewalks and no cars on the roads. Something huge must be happening!”

“Your overreacting doc! I think you need help too!” Stephen laughed. “But that is really strange…”

Joey looked at the clock on the wall. Then he turned to another patient who had been shoved in the same room as Joey.

“It’s been a little while hasn’t it?” Joey said to the sick man. “The nurse said be right back an hour and a half ago.”

The patient didn’t reply. He just stared into nothingness as if he were asleep or dead. Suddenly, Joey heard a noise from outside, a noise of a car skidding around a corner. He ran to the window and looked out to see a car speed past. A few moments later, a group of people ran by as if they were chasing the car. Joey estimated that there was about twenty of them. They didn’t show signs of slowing down, they just kept running. “They were either really pissed off, or really scared”, Joey thought. “Lucky I’m not down their either way!”

He then decided he would keep listening for anything else. Rather then miss something because he is thinking or talking, he would listen and look. He was tired but was too hyped up to sleep. He wanted to know what was going on. What was he missing? Did someone die? Have we been invaded?

Suddenly the nurse walked in the room holding a bunch of papers. She glanced through them a little and wheeled the sick man out of the room and into another. She returned shortly after.

“I can’t tell you what’s going on Joe.” She said. “But something is defiantly not right. I can’t contact anybody, I’ve tried all my relatives, friends, my boss and the off duty nurses. Nobody seems interested to talk.”

“Weird…” Joey stared back down on the street.

“But we did get one phone call… For you in fact!”

“Stephen Terrel?” Joey’s face lit up.

“No, it was a man called Doctor Richards. He is a psychologist. When I said I’d put you on the phone he just told me not to bother. He said that he would be coming to visit you very soon.”

“A god damned psychologist. Am I really that messed up?” Joey almost broke down. “Well either way, at least he might know what’s going on out there.”

Its good to be back.

Chapter 9: Didn’t Seem Human

The group stood at the counter listening attentively to the old man, who said his name was Herman Metcalf. By now everyone had calmed down, and Herman was a bit friendlier.

“So what you’re saying is the town was invaded by people who were really tripped out on drugs?” Remy asked Herman.

“Well they may have been on drugs, but it seemed worse,” Herman replied. “It was like they were almost brain dead or somethin’. And they were incredibly aggressive too. All they wanted to do was chase people around and try to attack ‘em. There probably would have been at least 30 of ‘em in the town at the time. I’ve never seen nothin’ like it.”

“But you kept referring to them as ‘them things’ as if they weren’t people,” Derek said.

“They didn’t seem human to me,” Herman replied. “I’ve never seen no human act like they were actin’. I’m not sure, but I may be the only person left in the town. Everyone else evacuated pretty much immediately. Some of ‘em went to a relative’s place or a friend’s place.”

“So, why did you stay here?” Jade asked.

“Just didn’t feel like leavin’. I’d rather stay here and defend my shop. Even my staff left. They looked at me as if I was crazy when I told ‘em I wasn’t gonna’ leave.”

“What if those people got in?”

“I guess I would have swung at a few with my knife. I’d go out and steal a gun if I wasn’t so sure them things were still out there somewhere.”

A silence fell upon the group as they tried to imagine what could have been wrong with the people that attacked the town.

“Well, what we really came for was help,” Derek said. “Our plane crashed a couple of kilometres from here. We tried to ring emergency but every time it was engaged. Do you think you could help us out somehow?”

“No can do,” Herman answered. “There’s no way I’m goin’ out there.”

“But…”

“I’m gonna’ have to ask you to leave now,” Herman said suddenly. “I’ll have to board up my window after that dumb jackass broke it,” he continued, gesturing to Ajay.

“Fine, whatever,” The group stepped out through the broken window and continued down the street. “What an ass,” Bianca said as soon as they were out of earshot. “What will we do now?”

“Do you think we should loot a shop somewhere?” Wesley suggested with an evil smile. “I mean we’re all starting to get hungry right?”

Ajay’s face lit up at the idea. “Amen to that, brother! Where’s the nearest supermarket?”

“I’m not sure about that,” Derek said. “We need to go back to the site of the crash and tell everyone about what the man said. We’ve been gone for 2 hours now and we still have to walk back. They’re probably wondering where the hell we are.”

“How about this?” said Remy. “A few of us find the nearest supermarket, or whatever, and loot it, while the rest go and inform the people with the plane.”

“Sounds good to me,” Darin liked the idea.

“Don’t you think we should stick together?” said Derek. “After what that old guy said, I’m not too willing to break this group us. I mean, we’re pretty vulnerable if we travel in packs of just three or four.”

“Oh, we’ll be fine,” said Remy. “That old man’s crazy. I’m sure the situation is nowhere near as bad as what he says it is. Ajay, Jade, you can come with me and Wesley. The Swedes can go with Derek.”

Sure,” Derek thought to himself. “Take the tanky dude and his wife. Now I have to walk with the Swedish guy and his girlfriend, both of who I can barely understand.”

Chapter 10: Doctor Richards Speaking!

Stephen and Doctor Richards walked down the Geelong streets slowly and carefully, making sure they looked all around them every so often to look for signs of life. The feeling that they weren’t alone sent a chill down Steph’s spine. It reminded him of some of his earlier days in Iraq, where he was almost always in the line of sight of an enemy soldier and was lucky never to even be shot at!

The shady man had Steph and Doctor Richards on their guard constantly. Not only that, but he said something was wrong with this place. Apart from the streets being completely abandoned, there didn’t seem to be much wrong. But the streets’ being abandoned was a very big deal for a city of this size.

Stephen noticed Doctor Richards was holding something in his pockets very tightly. He looked like he had seen a ghost or something scary like that.

“What’s wrong doc? You look like you’ve seen a zombie tear apart your family!” Stephen joked.

“It’s funny how you can still crack jokes especially when your in the mental state your in!” Doctor Richards tried to sound positive. He wasn’t feeling very positive since the streets were completely abandoned and the shady man had said he will be following them for the whole trip. Was he serious or was he just pulling their legs?

Joey was still looking down, only this time, not looking for other signs of life, he was just looking for anyone who could be Doctor Richards. It wouldn’t be hard to spot him if he was in the line of sight, since there wasn’t anyone else to stand in the way or crowds to just block off the site. He put his head in his hands and started thinking.

“Where the hell are you Stephen… You can’t ignore me forever.” He stopped. “Damn I sound so gay, lucky nobody can hear me in my thoughts… Maybe Mister Richards can help me out and stop me from thinking like a pansy!”

He laughed at his thought like he seemed to do all the time. It was too bad he could never share the things that went on in his head, since he thought nobody would find it funny but himself.

“Time to call Steph again!” He said out loud. He walked over to his bed and grabbed his phone again and dialled Stephen’s number. It was ringing again but this time was different. Someone answered.

“Hello, Doctor Richard’s speaking.” Doctor Richards said into Steph’s phone. Stephen had passed it to him when the same number that keeps ringing him did it again.

“Oh! You know Stephen! It’s Joey! Is Stephen there?” Joey asked into the phone.

“No, but he might be soon. But that’s not important right now. What’s important is you telling me why the streets here are completely abandoned!”

“No idea sorry mate, I thought you might know. How far are you from the hospital?”

“Pretty much there now. Talk to you when I get up there!” Doctor Richards pressed the red button on the phone and gave it back to Stephen. He didn’t say anything about who it was to Stephen, he just smiled.

Doctor Richards walked around the corner of the hospital and looked beside him. Stephen wasn’t there. He ran back around the corner and looked around. He couldn’t see Stephen anywhere.

“Steph? Where are you buddy?” He called. Stephen didn’t answer. “Stephen!!!”

Suddenly Stephen walked out of a small building holding a few bags of food and a bottle of wine. He had a big smile on his face.

“Nobody was here to sell me this stuff!” He said sounding the happiest he had since he met Doctor Richards. “So I got it all free! Some gifts for Joey!”

“You stole it? That’s taking this too far! If there are cameras in there you’re screwed!” Doctor Richards yelled.

“So? By the time they find out, I’ll be out of the country. Once I’m cured I’m so going to live in Europe somewhere. Take it easy forever!”

Doctor Richards rolled his eyes and motioned Stephen to hurry up and come over.

Joey got excited when he heard the elevator moving up. He ran over to it and stood out front of the doors which would soon open.

“Bullshit Steph aint with you. You can’t even lie over the phone you stupid doctor!!” Joey thought. He laughed out loud for a few seconds then stared at the doors. “This is sure taking a while!!!”

The elevator doors opened slowly. Joey’s smile turned into a disappointed frown when it was revealed to be empty. Suddenly he felt a hand grab his shoulder. He jumped and turned around suddenly to see Stephen and Doctor Richards standing there.

“Hey pal!” Joey laughed. “I’ll bet your glad I didn’t win a hand on poker night huh?”

Its good to be back.

Wow lil bro, I'm ashamed to admit I havent been in here before but sis inadvertently prompted me... It's very impressive! I love the description, I'm a huge fan of that, and the humour. Maybe dark humour. How you have the characters come across as very real people with very real flaws and fears, especially for arguably dark subject matter is real talent. And the inner monologue thing cracked me up, how I think we can all relate to that!

Noice work! You've both got real literary talent. Keep it up ^^

Chapter 11: The Trail

Remy, Wesley, Jade and Ajay walked into the ‘Coles’ supermarket. The windows had been broken like a few other shops. They stepped inside and noticed that a lot of stuff had already been taken. The shelves were only half full with products. There was also a big mess throughout the supermarket. Water, chips, milk, ice-cream and other types of food and been scattered all over the floors. The products had been knocked over on the shelves and the glass on the doors of the freezers was broken. A half-full trolley had been tipped over on it’s side and left near the entrance. It looked as if there had been a riot in there. It had probably been looted by heaps of people when the town was evacuated.

“Damn! What a mess!” exclaimed Jade.

Ajay picked up the trolley that had been left on the floor and set it down on its wheels. “Ladies and Gentlemen, let’s get shopping!”

They searched for the main things they needed, like water and bread, plus a few treats like chocolate and soft drink.

Wesley went straight to the sweets aisle. He was especially looking for some packets of Starburst lollies. He found them and opened a packet and started eating them. He grabbed five more packets and tucked them under his arms. He scanned the shelves for more lollies. He looked down at the bottom shelf, and his heart skipped a beat. He realized he was standing in a pool of blood.

“Oh shit,” he said quietly to himself. There was a trail of blood leading from where he was standing and along the floor toward the other end of the supermarket. The others were over in the bakery section and hadn’t noticed it. Wesley decided not to let them know about the blood and investigate it himself. He put the packets of lollies back on the shelf and followed the trail. He reached the end of the aisle and saw that the trail led past the doors that said “No Unauthorised Personnel” in big red capital letters. “Oh god, what the hell’s going on?” he said to himself in a nervous voice. He looked down at his hands to see that they were shaking. He tried to get a grip on himself, and then continued quietly past the doors and into a corridor. The blood was getting thicker as Wesley kept walking.

He had almost reached the corner when he heard a noise. It was strange, almost like a dog growling, but not quite. Maybe more like a Gremlin. Wesley pressed himself against the wall and peeked around the corner. He gasped when he saw the source of the blood. A man that looked like he may have been a manager or something was lying on the ground. His stomach looked as if it had been ripped open. He had wounds all over his arms and neck as well. Wesley put his hand over his mouth. Was the man making the noise? Maybe he was still alive and that growling sort of noise was the only thing he could force out.

Wesley didn’t know whether to tell the others, help the man, or just simply sprint out of the supermarket with his friends. He cursed himself as he decided to go and see if the man could possibly be still alive. As he got closer he realized the sound wasn’t coming from the man. It was coming from a room down the corridor to the left. In fact there were several of them.

“I think it’s time to go,” he thought. He turned to walk out and knocked a fire extinguisher out off the wall. It fell to the ground and made a big CLANG! sound. A head poked out from the room and saw Wesley. Wesley stood there for a moment. The head went back into the room, like a turtle revealing its head, then going back into its shell. Then the three people that had been in the room came out and sprinted at Wesley.

“SHIT!” he exclaimed as he turned and ran.

Derek was repulsed. Repulsed at the sight of Bianca and Darin constantly kissing while they were walking beside him. The sounds were a bit off-putting as well.

“For god’s sake, get a room!” He thought. He tried to distance himself from them a little bit. He could only take so much.

As they walked, the plane wreck came in sight. But there was something strange about it. It looked as if no one was standing. Maybe they were just tired and wanted to lie down, but still something seemed a bit weird. Another possibility was that they got impatient and decided to leave. Derek almost hoped that was the case. Less people to worry about.

They got closer and closer and the noticed there were less people, and all of them were lying down. Some were more spread out, some even up to 100 metres from the rest. Derek immediately assumed the worst.

“Guys, I think something’s wrong,” said Derek. Darin and Bianca looked up at the plane wreck and saw the same thing Derek had.

They started to jog towards the crash site. When they got near it, they saw blood. Lots of it. The grass was smeared with blood stains. Derek’s heart began to beat faster and faster,

“Those people that old man was talking about,” Derek said as he ran. “They’ve been here.”

They arrived at the wreck. If it wasn’t a mess before, it was now. Bodies were lying all over the place. There was the group that were killed from the plane crash, then there were about 10 bodies lying in another area and a few more on their own in different places. They had all been ripped open. It was the goriest thing they’d ever seen. Bianca sobbed into Darin’s shoulder. Derek just looked at the aftermath of a massacre in shock. He tried his hardest to keep his balance, because he could feel that a strong wind would push him over.

“We need to go,” Darin stated. “Whatever did this, there is a chance they come back.”

Derek didn’t answer. He couldn’t answer. He thought if he tried to talk gibberish would blurt out.

Then they heard a distant voice coming from behind them. They turned around to see Wesley, Remy, Jade and Ajay coming towards them. It looked like they were running but it was hard to tell from such a distance. The voice rang out again, but Derek couldn’t understand what it was saying. They were too far away. The voice rang out one more time, and this time Derek, Bianca and Darin knew exactly what it was saying. Run.

Its good to be back.

In this next chapter, a new character is introduced which is probably one of the bets characters i've ever created. I'm proud of how i've done with him, even now (we are actualy 20 chapters ahead)!!

Chapter 12: Did You See That Movie?

“Did you get us the coffees?” Joey asked the nurse. Upon inspecting her face she looked very pale and scared. “What’s…”

“We can’t stay here…” She said. “We have to go, now!”

She grabbed Joey and Stephen’s arms and told them to follow her. Doctor Richards followed wondering what was going on. They all were in fact. She led them to the stairs and started running down them as fast as she could. Tears were streaming down her face as she led the three men to the main foyer of the hospital. She looked up and down the street looking for some transport.

She couldn’t speak, even though she wanted to tell them what she had seen. But there wasn’t time, there would hopefully be time later. She looked all around to see if there were any ambulances left around. Nothing. Suddenly a black van pulled up nearby. A voice rang out telling them to get in and to be quick about it.

Stephen noticed inside the hospital a large group of people run through the door to that led to the stairs. They were all covered in blood and were making noises like they were choking. They were running towards the four confused people. Stephen knew that all they wanted to do was kill.

“Shit! Run!” Stephen yelled out as the people got closer to them. All four of them ran towards the van as fast as they could. Stephen was at the front, being the fittest. They had a fair distance to run but the adrenaline made it a lot easier. Suddenly, Joey tripped over. He stumbled on a rock and smashed his face on the ground. The nurse noticed and ran over to him. She helped him up and pushed him ahead. By that point the people were very close. One of them dived forward and grabbed the nurse’s leg. She fell over and screamed in pain. All the people jumped around her and to Joey’s surprise, began tearing her open.

He jumped in the sliding door of the van which the others had already jumped in and the van started moving. Joey jumped to the front seat and watched in horror and the nurse who had cared for him over the last year was ripped apart. He couldn’t believe it. His eyes widened and he began shaking like he had too much caffeine in him.

“Tell me what the hell is going on?!?” Stephen yelled at the driver. “Who are…”

Stephen stopped as he examined the driver. He was familiar. It may have been his mind screwing with him but he had bad feelings about this guy.

“Hey, we saw you on the train. You must know what’s going on.” Doctor Richards broke Stephen’s chain of thoughts.

“Look, I don’t know. I told you I was told something was wrong. Not that I knew everything. Now heres the deal, what ever they are, they aren’t human. And they are after human flesh.” The man said.

“You mean like a zombie?” Doctor Richards laughed. “That’s impossible. I’m a doctor, don’t try to feed me that bullshit!”

“The art of necromancy is a myth, and so are zombies. Let me ask you, have you ever seen the movie 28 Days Later?”

“Yes, stupid movie!”

“Was it?” The man paused. “Scientists said that it is very possible for events like that to occur sometime. These people aren’t the ‘living dead’. They are living people who have gone crazy.”

“Science fiction bullshit.”

“Okay then smartass, you explain what’s going on? I witnessed my brother get torn apart by his best mate. Doesn’t that strike you as somewhat odd? Or are you just stupid?”

Joey finally spoke.

“Explain what we just saw doctor. Tell me why those ordinary people who I played chess with ripped the nurse apart.”

Nobody spoke. They just thought about what they had seen. Except for the shady man, who hadn’t even introduced himself yet. He was thinking of other things. More evil and selfish things.

“Who are you?” Stephen broke the silence.

“My name is Gavin Deshaun.” The man turned said. “I am the number one martial arts champion in Czech Republic. Pleased to meet you all.”

Elias Izzago ran as fast as he could down the highway. He knew they were catching up. He was running out of energy, which is something he was used to since he was a football player for the local team who, were the top team. But that didn’t matter to him right now. He didn’t know what he had done wrong, but they wanted him dead. He could tell by the looks on their faces.

But why now? Yeah he was the weakest kid on the team, and yeah he was an average teenager rather then a good football player, but why would the entire team show up to training covered in blood, wanting to kill him? He tried to answer all the questions in his head but could find no logical answer.

He heard them making sounds. He thought it was to scare him. He was just hoping that he would get out of this alive. He took an exit off the highway and ran into a small town. There were streets and courts running everywhere which he thought he could work to his advantage. He ran around a corner only to see more houses.

“HELP ME!” He yelled out. “THEY’RE GOING TO KILL ME!”

He looked behind to see they were still chasing him. He bolted around another corner as taking a sip of his sports drink to try and get some fluids back so he could run a little longer. His eyes widened when he watch another bunch of people run out of a course and head straight for him. He suddenly felt relieved.

“Thank god! These people… They…” He stopped and looked at them running towards him. He screamed when he noticed they were also covered in blood and their choking noises became clearer as they got closer. He ran over to the nearest fence and climbed over it. He ran across the backyard he had just jumped into and jumped another fence. Then another and another and another until he got back onto a street. It seemed like they had lost him. He knew it would be a matter of time before they found him. So he continued to run. He ran as fast as he could, trying to stay as quiet and out of sight as possible. He took another sip of his sports drink and jumped a few more fences. He stopped in a random backyard and collapsed. He was out of energy completely. Not even the sports drink could help him now. He passed out within a few minutes.

He couldn’t help but dream of the massive chase and for some reason, he felt proud of how long he managed to keep away from them, and they never did get him. Not once did he wonder why the second group of people also seemed to want to kill him. But soon enough he’d have an idea why.

Its good to be back.

Chapter 13: What Are We Running From?

“Just keep running,” Derek thought to himself. “You can rest later. Right now you just need to run.” The stitch in his side was the biggest he ever had. But that didn’t stop him. He didn’t even know why he was running. But the fear he had seen on the face of Wesley as he screamed to run, there was no doubt something bad was happening, and Derek didn’t want a bar of it.

He looked back. Bianca and Darin were a fair way back. He noticed a few droplets of dark red blood on the ground. It looked as if there was another survivor of the plane crash that had gotten further than the others. Derek just hoped he didn’t come across another body. Hopefully this person had survived and was hiding somewhere.

Derek’s fears came true. He saw the body of a middle-aged woman lying on the ground. He stopped briefly to examine the damage. She wasn’t breathing. She had short blonde hair, and the only wounds she had were on her shoulders. They looked like bite marks. Wait, bite marks? Surely not, who would bite a person to death?

Her mobile phone was lying next to her leg. Since he didn’t have one for himself, Derek picked it up and put it in his pocket. He looked back to see that Darin and Bianca were now walking. So were the others behind them. They must be safe.

Derek began to walk back. His legs and ankles were aching like hell. He couldn’t remember the last time he had to run so hard. And he hadn’t even seen what he was running from.

“What’s the story, guys?” Derek said when the group formed up again.

“We don’t even know,” Jade said. “Wesley comes running out of the staff area and screams at us to run.”

Wesley seemed really out of it. He was constantly looking back to see if there was a threat, and his eyes seemed glazed over.

“So what happened, Wesley?”

He didn’t answer. It was like he didn’t even hear the question.

“Hey, Wesley!” Remy shouted as he clicked his fingers in front of Wesley’s eyes.

Wesley looked up and replied “Not now,” and lied down on the ground. Everyone looked at each other confusedly.

“Wesley, are you ok?”

“I’m fine,” he replied. “Just not now.” He put his arm over his eyes and just drifted off to sleep.

“How strange,” Darin said.

They stood and discussed what had just happened for half an hour. Every now and then they looked around to see if there were any immediate dangers lurking.

“So no one knows why we were running?” asked Bianca, looking around.

“Nope,” Ajay answered. “For all we know, Wesley could have been jerking our chains.”

“No way, man,” Remy snapped, defending his friend. “I’ve known Wesley for a long time. I have never seen him like that before.”

They sat around the passed-out Wesley. They even considered falling asleep as well, but there was no way they’d be getting any sleep anytime soon.

“Damn, man,” Ajay said suddenly. “I thought I was havin’ a shitty day when the flight was being delayed!”

Its good to be back.

Chapter 14: Lost Dog

Gavin laughed as he reversed the van into a building. He opened the back door to the van so that anything, or anyone inside the building could easily get in. He quickly said his goodbyes to Stephen, Joey and Doctor Richards and ran away.

“He fucking drugged us man… That’s why we’re in this situation.” Joey said trying to sound smart.

“Who gives a shit why we’re here. It’s how the fuck we are going to get out of this that has got me stumped.” Stephen replied.

“We’re tied up dude, how do you think we’re going to get out of this?!?”

“Someone will come, someone will save us. We have to be positive!” Doctor Richards said with a smile.

“You know what? Shut the fuck up doctor! You’re always so god damned positive, in every situation. This is obviously bad. We have been fucked over and you’re still confident. Fuck that man!” Stephen finally cracked.

“Calm down Mr Terrel!”

“No! Fuck you! I’ve had enough! I can’t take this! You drag me out here, and look at me know. I’m as good as fucking dead! Iraq couldn’t kill me so you had to come finish me off didn’t you?”

“Calm down!”

“If we get out of this I am going to kill you!”

“Steph clam down buddy. I can hear footsteps, we’re going to be fine!” Joey smiled. The three looked into the building and saw two people come around the corner. They were a little bit freaked out and scared to move closer but when Stephen called them over they somehow lost all fear. They came over and untied the three guys. Instantly Stephen lashed out at Doctor Richards and started punching him. Doctor Richards wasn’t a very strong man so he struggled to fight back. Joey and the two people pulled Stephen away from Doctor Richards and got him to calm down.

“My name is Jean Pasquale.” The female introduced herself. “This is Greg Harding. We survived a plane crash and were chased here. Greg’s lucky, he was a little tiny bit slow.”

“Hey! I’m only a little overweight!” Greg said in his own defence. “Anyway we made it, so huzzah!”

“My name is Joey. This is my mate Stephen and our ‘companion’ Doctor Richards.” They all exchanged handshakes and had short introduction conversations. They decided it would be safer to leave and find a better building to hide out in.

Too bad the Gavin destroyed parts of the van.

Elias woke when a large dog licked his face. He laughed at first but the happiness faded when he realized it wasn’t all a dream. He drank some of his sports drink and leaned himself up against a fence. The dog followed him and he started petting it.

“A little lost eh boy?” He said to the dog. The dog whimpered and curled up next to him.

“Me too, sure sucks huh?” Elias got up and slowly walked towards the house he was sleeping outside of. He peeked in the back door. He saw nothing, so he decided he would open the door. He crept inside and walked through the house but didn’t find anyone on the first storey of the house. He walked over to some stairs and slowly made his way up them. When he got to the top, he looked both ways. Hunger began to set in, which was the last thing he cared about. Suddenly, a door flew open down a hall no the top storey. A woman covered in blood ran out making the same choking sound the people who chased Elias before made.

Elias stumbled back and found himself almost tumbling down the stairs. The woman ran at him just like the other people had. Elias managed to kick her feet out just as she was close to him. The woman fell head first down the stairs and landed face down. Her face got impaled on the bottom step. She trembled for a few seconds but then all signs of life faded.

Elias couldn’t believe what he had just seen and done. He was now a murderer. That scared him. There is no second chance for murder. It’s straight to juvenile hall for him after the body is discovered.

The next thing Elias saw was the dog run up the stairs to him. For some reason he felt like the dog was trying to get him to follow. So he decided he would. The dog walked into a room and lay in a basket to sleep. Elias shut the door of the room and put a chair under the door handle so it couldn’t be turned. He was still trembling as much as he was when he first was chased. It was too much for him to take. He broke down and cried for a while.

When he finally pulled himself together, he reached his shaky hand into his pocket and grabbed his phone. He pressed some buttons and found his mum’s number stored on the phone. He pressed the call button and crossed his fingers.

“Pick up mum, please, pick up!”

Its good to be back.
