Also known as MMA, No Holds Barred,or Cage Fighting, the sport of Mixed Martial Arts fight has risin into the mainstream of America and Japan and is starting to establish a foothold in countries such as Great Britain,Canada, and Mexico. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has taken over the PPV rankings for the US beating out Professional Wrestling and most Boxing events. Though many safety advancements have been made and it is respected by most, some high profile groups including top Boxing supporters compare it to such things as dogfighting and try to destroy it's reputation, even though the death rate of fighters is much higher in Boxing. I was just wondering what people's views on the sport were outside of it's general fanbase.

in a way, its more brutal, basically yer...no holds barred

u cant really call it a martial art, as martial arts pride themselves MAINLY on self defense, using techniques in the name of protecting yourself or and not using your techniques in such a brutal way. there is also a big deal when it comes to honor or respect for an opponent, an opponent is down you will let them get up to allow a fair fight to continue, here however, man goes down, your free to kick his stomach in or jump on top of him

Spectacle it maybe.Respectable it is certainly not.

Yes, it takes training and a mental understanding of the different movements incorporated within the realm of MMA. But, you will always have someone saying it's not a sport...hell I don't think golf is a sport, but to each their own.

Well it's not really a single martial art to beging with, hence it being "Mixed"....also many martial arts such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are ground-based and require rules that open up the possibility of ground combat, though there is no "kicks to the stomach" as you say, that is against the Unified Rules used in the US and some other countries

Clearly you haven't seen Happy Gilmore.

I am in your forum, posting grammatically accurate responses.

what im saying isnt that u cant incorporate martial arts into this style of fighting, im just saying u cant

a)call it a sport, let alone respectable, since its basically 2 guys brawling, hell i could go down to my local pub and see guys do that for free instead of paying a paytv channel to watch it,

b)say that its a martial art, even if it is..."mixed", martial arts is based on the basis of self defense...sure there might be "self defense",but most of the time its just free for all beat downs, theres nothing "art" about this, watcing cuttas or techniques performed by black belts, and you can understand why its called an art, this is just plain ugly, and

c) theres no form of fairness, as opposed to golf, where EVERYONE competes for 18 holes and handicaps apply and so forth, here, the rules are simple, beat the shit outta the next guy, restrictions? you cant hit him in the stomach....thats cold comfort when your crotch takes a beating, and this is no holds barred, whereas a ref in boxing can say..."ur gettin smashed, thats it,im calling this off", in this MMA,the fight wont end until the guy is liteerally pommled out of existence, its not like everyone has some form of fighting chance, in boxing there are weight divisons, here? you fight anyone, and it can be mismatched, for very dire cnsequences

I love MMA. I consider it a sport and it is respectable. and as for fairness, it is MMA so a lot of the time, the smaller competitors are trained to fight larger opponents. And if they haven't... thats their bad luck imo.
Its good to be back.

this is the perfect sport for thugs, there isnt anything clean or "fun" abut it, unless you enjoy a bloke beating the shit out of another in an atmoshphere where there are no rules and basically no sense for safety, purely for entertainment purposes

by all means, yes it is technically a sport, but this is hardly something kids can do

a) I'm pretty sure the guys at your pub haven't beeen traing for years in Wrestling,Jiu-Jitsu,or Muay Thai

b) I've seen many black belts such as BJ Penn and Royce Gracie compete in MMA,and it can be amazing to see their techniques

BJ Penn vs. Rodrigo Gracie- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UE3QQZKFC2U

Royce Gracie vs. Jason DuLucia- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kkd8_BiBu_U

c) Well this arguement is totally off...there are weight class in MMA just like in Boxing, also groin shots have not been allowed for a long time. Also Referee Stoppage is the way most MMA fights end,and they are stooped at the first sign that fighter cannot intellegently defend himself

There are fights that go on in other countries much in the same only without a ref...Watch Human Weapon, they travel to those parts where it is more brutal than UFC...some parts it's fight to the death, and they've been doing it for centuries. It is respectable, but like with any one person it can get personal quick. The main reason it gets so much flak from the public is because now we are seeing it on TV, in a country such as Thailand it would be common knowledge that these types of fights are being held.

I haven't seen Human Weapon but just watching UFC I have respect for those guys and it is more a sport than boxing...

It's a sport but I find it very loose on respect. Sure you can respect the fact that the guy is willing to go out there and get his ass kicked, but that's when it looses it fun. Basically what it comes down to is two drooling beefed up patty cakes with attitudes and a background in _name form of martial arts/wrestling_. Then they just fight (which really leads to about half the match of them hugging each other trying to toss low blows.) What, imo, really makes a sport respectable in my opinion is when things like strategy and cleverness come into play. Lets face it, besides just knowing what blows your opponent can take you don't need any other foresight for ufc. In a sport like boxing (though occasionally there are low blows) all you have is your fists. You have to read punches in advanced way more than UFC. You have to see where hits hurts while managing to not hurting yourself. You always have to stand and that hugging shit only lasts like 5 seconds. In football(American) you have to devise plays and motions that can out do the opposing defense. In soccer(football) you have to have foresight as to wear your passing, whos coming up by passing to him will the other guy clear up? In golf you have to account things like wind, estimation, and math.

Granted in UFC you have this "mental" endurance and physical endurance of just taking a blow. Which sure, I respect Chuck Liddel for being a big douche rod with a tendency for taking a slap. But the UFC on it's own is a joke and nothing more than a marketing genius trying to get that 16-35 year old male demographic to watch their show.

Human Weapon ftw.
